What is an HRIS? A key tool for all your human resources needs | CIO - 2 views

I remember I had to manually put this in because the time cards and the leave tracking feautures were not linked.
  • Most HRIS offer broad self-service functionality to streamline HR functionality and ease the administrative burden.

I worked in HR for a couple of months and it is INSANE how much paperwork they have to deal with
  • An effective HRIS provides information on just about anything a company needs to track and analyze data about employees, former employees, and applicants, from their first application, through their tenure on the job, to resignation or retirement. It’s a one-stop-shop for individuals, employees, managers and hiring and recruiting professionals to find information when they need it.

Most important feature. HR is so much more than paper, we need more interaction with HUMANS

This article goes over the main basics of HRIS's in terms of the different names used, what is is used for, and the benefits of the systems. The benefits section is the meat of the article, as it shows how these systmes can free up time and energy from mundane tasks once they are automated. One example of this is tracking leave. I remember that i had to once go back and add sick, annual, job basis, and family medical leave for over 500 employees because this was not (and still is not) automated. In conjunction with my other projects, this took a couple of months do to because no one had been doing it for a year.

The New Normal For Hospitality - 0 views

  • Valet may be replaced by self-parking and a guest may not see a bellman rushing to grab their bags as they enter through the automatic doors already wearing compulsory face masks. All staff will be masked up, and many will wear disposable gloves for additional protection. Guests will probably skip the front desk as they have already chosen a room online and prepare to stand on the outline of socially distanced feet or lane markers in front of the elevators.
    • yvenisem

Change in the way we do things, less interaction
  • Guests will also be greeted by the welcome addition of extra towels and toiletries in the bathroom to avoid the need for room cleaning and turndown services during their stay. This is both a cost saving and hygiene effort though there have been several anecdotal reports that, counterintuitively, guests have recently pushed back on this economy. Service has long been the cornerstone of hospitality and old habits (or expectations) are still highly valued by guests.
    • yvenisem

This may change the way the hospitality industry functions long-term.
  • Gone will be the generously appointed buffet, most likely replaced with a boxed preparation or a grab-and-go option.
    • yvenisem

Unfortunate because this can reduce interaction and quality of stay
  •
This article goes over the "new normal" of the hospitality industry and shows a somewhat grim future for the hospitality industry. This pandemic has made it so that the industry know for exemplary customer service is somewhat prohibited from what it is known for. No more valets, no more greeting front desk agents, no more waiting in a buffet, etc. It's a sad reality, but there is no reason to believe that this will be how we will be forever.

What is Proximity Marketing? - Business 2 Community - 0 views

  • Proximity marketing has been in and out of the headlines since Apple launched iBeacons in 2013. It was a platform that ultimately failed to take off but more refined (and open-source) versions have had better success since then – namely Google’s beacon system.
    • yvenisem

I had no idea of this. Just goes to show that people can keep trying until they get it right
  • You can even create networks to track people as they move around a store, sending them messages based on the aisle they’re walking down or the range of products they’re looking at.
    • yvenisem

This might be frightening for unaware customers. This may even cause some anger because customers are being tracked and many consumers may not like that
  • Customer recalls: Send promotions and other messages to people who leave without buying anything to entice them back into the store.

This is less invasive and actually a great idea for businesses to implement in order to promote repeat business

The article goes over how the technology works, but most importantly it goes over the benefits of the technology, all of which promotes repeat business.

This article is about a company named eMenue International that offers a revolutionary way of allowing customers to order their food. Instead of the traditional paper menues, guests would be given iPads where they could view pictures and videos of the food that is available to order. This visual element was added in on the premise that people are more enticed by visual elements rather than descriptions of the meal. This technology was adopted by one of NYC's oldest steakhouses agter 100 years, which bodes very well for the business since checks increas by up to 9% after a couple of months. Some of the most valuable aspects of this new method of ordering is the ability for someone to view menue items in the native tongue, widening the range of customers restaurants can receive, increasing profits. Another thing to note is that this menue allows people to click on a tab that caters to their specific dietary needs. In terms of marketing, this could be great since it also offers the ability to showcase the different amenities in the restaurant whther that means meeting space or event packages.

Electronic Waste: A Growing Concern in Today's Environment - 0 views

shared by yvenisem on 28 Sep 20 - No Cached
  • Over the past two decades, the global market of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) continues to grow exponentially, while the lifespan of those products becomes shorter and shorter. Therefore, business as well as waste management officials are facing a new challenge, and e-Waste or waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is receiving considerable amount of attention from policy makers.
    • yvenisem

From this we see technology market is progressing to grow however the lifespan of these items lessesns. In turn, this creates a problem for those that work in the waste managemnent sector and calls for politics to get involved.
  • e-Waste has raised concerns because many components in these products are toxic and do not biodegrade easily if at all.
    • yvenisem

Besides contributing to landfills e-waste can also contain many toxic chemicals. I know that mercury and other harmful chemicals can are common in electronics.
  • Most developing countries lack the waste removal infrastructure and technical capacities necessary to ensure the safe disposal of hazardous waste. And e-Waste has been linked to a variety of health problems in these countries, including cancer, neurological and respiratory disorders, and birth defects
    • yvenisem

One of the biggest issues is that developing countries do not have the resources or infastructure to properly dispose of e-waste. I know that economics play a huge roll in this issue as 3rd world countries are often used as dumping places for 1st world waste, and these problems are not being addressed because of sytematic limitations. The health concerns are also staggering, they include: cancer, birth defects etc...
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • However, even with these regulations, all hazardous materials that are used in newly manufactured products cannot be fully controlled, and management of e-Waste within the supply chain cannot be fully addressed.
    • yvenisem

From this we can see that even with additional policies enacted they are simply not enough to address the e-waste issue. In my opinion with a issue this severe more drastic measures should be taken considering the options that have been exacterbated.
  • For e-Waste management systems, some of the most successful examples can be found in countries such as Switzerland and the Netherlands [16 D. Sinha-Khetriwal, P. Kraeuchi, and R. Widmer, “Producer responsibility for e-waste management: key issues for consideration—learning from the Swiss experience,” Journal of Environmental Management, vol. 90, no. 1, pp. 153–165, 2009. View at: Publisher Site | Google Scholar See in References ]. Experience of the Swiss e-Waste management system is shown as an example in this paper. Generally, the Swiss e-Waste management system can be viewed as an ERP-based system, where each stakeholder has their own clear definition of role and responsibilities as shown in Table 4.

Here we see that more sucessful applications have been implemented in Nordic countries. The author goes into further detail about the techniques used by these countries.
  •
The main point of this scientific report was to demonstrate how e-waste is becoming an issue and why the current structures in place today are simply not enough to overcome this issue. The author goes into detail the common issues with e-waste: hazardous materials being disposed of incorrectly, the side effects e-waste has on human and environmental life, how current infrastructures in 3rd world countries are not able to keep up with the waste load, why certain policies aren't enough and how new techniques such as the ones being applied in Nordic countries may be the answer to the issue. Ultimately the author makes the argument for why it is an issue, how the issue is growing, and presents alternatives on how to better tackle the e-waste issue.

This article was created during the time when everything with the pandemic had started looking more and more grim. It outlines a few things hotels could do before, during, and after closures to ensure there was seamless communication across the various channels they use to market their facilities, book their facilities, and many other things. Although I was not very familiar with the lingo being used, I still understood the general concept of what the writer of the article was trying to get across. This definitely showed me just how interconnected everything is and how much easier it is to "communicate the changes to the travel industry and the traveling public" when using GDS systems. This has been made especially important since COVID has disrupted the way that we operate in everyday life, we need to know and understand how best to communicate with customers. What really interested me was the way that the writer started looking forward and being more on the offensive by saying "set yourself a reminder to reverse these changes once conditions improve" This is very refreshing to read considering how grim things were looking at the time. It definitely speaks volumes of how the industry works. Overall, the article was moreso of a "how-to" guide of how to communicate changes through the medium of the Synxis CRS. It also went a little further and explained how to use marketing messages that "display with rate availability in Amadeus, Apollo/Galileo, and Worldspan."

I think the reason for this is that many people don't have the funds or time to travel long distances, but this format is much more accessible. Plus, it was free so that helps lol
  • adding that the online event had more than three times the usual number of registrations
    • yvenisem

relates a lot to this week's discussion on relying on tech too much
  • (the virtual conference was free to attend this year, whereas it usually costs upwards of $1,000)

    • yvenisem

This is definitely much more accessible. This can also do well in terms of revenue for future events
  • switching to being an online speaker isn’t quite the same. “You don’t have the body language, you don’t have the eye contact,” she explained.
    • yvenisem

This would be my main concerns in producing events. I feel like ther has to be a personal element to it instead of just looking at people through acomputer screen
  • vents organizers may be encouraged to film their speakers in a way that works better for a small-screen format, instead of the usual “dark room with a very small person,
    • yvenisem

this could be a hybrid thing
  • “While online events might seem less permanent, there’s actually a much higher chance that any misdemeanors or breaches of copyright or online regulation will be captured or stored.”
    • yvenisem

I never considered this, but this definitely has to be something to consider when in something like this
  •
One of the main reasons why I chose this article is because my industry is currently seein a huge shift in the way we do things that can either stay or have impressions in the industry after COVID. One of the main concerns when it came to in-person events going online is how we would be able to recreate the same experience. Several large events that see thousands of people had to convert to online platforms. For example, "in 2019, around 20,000 people attended SAP's Sapphire Now conference in Orlando". Imagine 20,000 people logging on to view the same same content an then some! In this case, the event saw larger audiences with "more than three times the usual number of registrations". Granted, the conference was free to attend this year. However, now that this conference was more accessible to people who in normal circumstance would be unable to attend due to time and fianancial constraints, it was a no-brainer that more people would attend. This bodes very well in terms of revenue for the future since if those extra 40,000 people enjoyed it, they would most likely be willing to pay for the service and consider the event and investment. I think the wider topic of the article is accessibility. Before technology, it was harder to bridge the gap between the haves and the have nots. Now that technology is becoming more accessible (in the first world), many are better able to see beneficial information. Not only that, but when considering the "14 local events in various languages and time zones", people are better able to cast wider nets. This article wasn't all good, however. One thing that many people have not adressed that I as an event professional am concerned about is the fact that going online is just not the same. A speaker said in an interview that it's harder to ready body language, which can impact how much a speaker is able to reach their audience. Another thing that has to be given intense consideration is the fact that there can be some legal ramifica

shows how quickly technology can go
  •
This article was surprisingly a very interesting read due to how fast things actually are in the world of technology as it relates to the hospitality industry. In this article, I read about the origins of Wi-Fi when it was primarily used as basic network connections for POS software to where we are now with an expectation of the revolutionary technology that is Wi-Fi 6 to roll out in 2021. Currently, we as a society are only really familiar with Wi-Fi 5 that functions on a first-come, first-served basis. Wi-Fi 6, moves past the focus of getting faster internet to getting more efficient internet. While this is a factor of the technology in that it is 4-5 times faster, it actually goes about giving people better internet acces in a more intelligent manner. Based on the article, this intelligence means that instead of someone benefitting from 100MB download speeds when they're watching a short YouTube video since they logged onto the hotel internet first, a person that is streaming a live convention with several cameras and computers would benefit more because it would be more efficient than a simple YouTube video. Something that the author of this article makes very known is that this technology is not getting "better" interms of evolution of product. Wi-Fi 6 is actually entering a new era of intelligence, making it a more revolutionary development in the tech industry and hospitality. In the 21st century, new technology like this is essential because we see so many things moving onto online services when it comes to booking a hotel, buying event tickets, interacting with other people, etc. In a hotel setting, this new technology would lead to increased satisfaction since their Snapchat and Instagram stories are being uploaded at nearly instantaneous speeds, same with their YouTube videos, and Facebook photos. While this may not be the best thingsto do when considering how much of our lives we spend online, it is best to go along and welcome it since the advancemen
