Why Your Restaurant Needs a Mobile POS System - businessnewsdaily.com - 0 views

  • Mobile POS systems allow restaurants to increase sales and retain customers using their own tablets or smartphones.
  • A mobile POS, or mPOS, is a point-of-sale system that uses a smartphone or tablet to act as a register and accept payments on the go. A mobile POS accepts credit cards and contactless payments.
  • What sets a mobile POS apart from a stationary POS system is the portability of the hardware
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • An mPOS is best for businesses that want to complete transactions on the go – such as a landscaper, a food delivery service, or a retailer that wants to move customers through the checkout process faster.
  • Mobile POS systems are also popular with market vendors, home repair services and food trucks.
  • An unattended POS system enables self-ordering and self-checkout, which has become popular during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Getting an mPOS system up and running is simple. You choose your mobile POS software provider, download the app, and connect your card reader to the mobile device. Once that's complete, you can start accepting payments. Mobile POS systems rely on Wi-Fi or a data connection to process payments.
  • The standout features that make mPOS popular include portability, speedy checkout, inventory management tools and advanced reporting.
  • Restaurant owners have come to rely on mPOS systems for several reasons. They're easier to set up and use, they support a wide selection of third-party integrations, and they can facilitate rewards and loyalty programs.

Hotels Remain a Prime Target for Hackers - Security Boulevard - 0 views

  • Two years ago, in its “Hotels Outlook Report 2018-2022,” PWC found that hotels are a favorite target for hackers, with the hospitality industry having the second-highest breach numbers after the retail sector
  • . The same report found that 74% of hotels lacked breach protection
  • In 2018, hackers attempted to access Marriott International’s Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide guest reservation database. In the same year, the Radisson Hotel Group identified a breach affecting Radisson Rewards members
  • ...11 more annotations...
  • These breaches can also be costly, with the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) fining Marriott $23.8 million for the Starwood breach.
  • Today, close to 50% of all bookings happen through online travel agencies or online channels, with the share of offline bookings dropping every year.
  • For hotels, the information is exchanged between the payment gateway, the OTA, the intermediary and its central reservations system (CRS
  • These multiple data exchanges among partners leave the data that much more susceptible to breaches
  • , as not all providers have the same security standards.
  • First, they should reduce the temptation to focus on standalone point solutions
  • Instead, they should look at technology providers that help in securing the entire data value chain by focusing on having a security framework that stops data from moving outside of the country (which is where it is typically misused
  • Second, hotels should know the storage practices and policies of all providers, insisting on a zero percent storage rate to reduce the chance of personal data getting expos
  • Similarly, hotels should make sure that partners do not store any credit card information locally, which will reduce the risk of exposure
  • lso, with most companies using some form of cloud infrastructure, hotels should know the structure used by any partner (private, hybrid, public) as well as what protections are in place
  • They will also be taking an important step in protecting their brand identity, as brand will be essential as the recovery from the COVID-19 fallout continues
  •
This article points out that hotels are still a huge target for hackers. Hotels need to make sure they reduce the temptation on standalone point solutions. Hotels should focus on having a security framework that stops data from moving outside of he country. To limit hacking as well, hotels should not store information locally. It was surprising to read that 74% of hotels lacked breach protection.

This article discusses five ways to stimulate Ecommerce which includes corresponding with guests, remaining active on social media, not letting your SEO go on leave, devising media budgets and targeting, as well as employing the help of an expert. The author emphasized staying in contact with your customers whether it be through your website, social media, or email. The intention is to stay connected with your guest so that when it is time for them to choose a hotel, they will choose yours. Social media can be used as a tool to entice your future guest and keep them interested in your property. Keeping search traffic up for your website will also ensure people continue to look at your property. Keep in mind the kind of travelers that will come to your property, and tailor your advertisements, messaging, and offers to meet the needs of those travelers. And lastly, if needed, do not be afraid to enlist the help of an expert. This article is meant as a guide for getting one's Ecommerce back on track during these hard pandemic times.
  •
My opinion on this article is that E-commerce has been a huge hit as of lately and it is time for this type of trend to follow in the hospitality world. There is a huge shift from walk-in business to online bookings and the best way to show guests the improvements to the property would be through email and social media presence. This would give properties a competitive advantage when it comes to OTA bookings.

Sun, Sand and Cyber: Does the Hospitality Industry Need to Invest in Cybersecurity Now?... - 0 views

  • To ensure businesses are in the best possible position to compete during and long after the Coronavirus pandemic is over, both customers and employees need to be educated on the security measures on offer to feel comforted in this brave new business climate.
  • For businesses to feel empowered against today’s many challenges, a consistent approach to risk management is absolutely crucial. A CISO with the authority to carry out real change and impart strong governance across the business would be hugely valuable.
    • jalipman

An entity to regulate and update cyber security in order to keep all information safe would be very helpful. But it could be argued that an organization that has access to all systems could pose a larger risk to cyber security than it would negate.
  • These burdens come into sharper focus when you consider the digital environment in which hotels are operating. Individual hotels are often connected to the organization’s national or international network, meaning only one hotel has to be breached before the entire company is at risk of hemorrhaging huge volumes of its data.
    • jalipman

This is a good example of why every hotel needs to be constantly updating and on alert for cyber attacks because if one hotel server is compromised the entire national system is at risk.
  • ...9 more annotations...
  • Most crucially, a cybersecurity strategy must include a solid plan for Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery in order to prepare for any worst-case scenarios. In the era of COVID-19, incidents of the worst kind are fast emerging and businesses deserve a fighting chance to succeed.
  • The root of this cyber crisis lies in the way hotels are hampered by disparate legacy systems and out-of-date software where breaches are rife for the taking, particularly on hotels’ Point of Sale (POS) systems and other external vendors. Adding to this, hotels often outsource their customer IT connectivity but unfortunately forget to consistently monitor and audit suppliers’ security measures.
  • Today, the systems used for various functions in a hotel’s back and front operations are manned by employees who are not yet well-equipped to pick up on and counter large-scale cyber-attacks until it’s too late.
    • jalipman

Simply put, hotels are not focusing enough on these attacks and their security systems are made primarily to identify and ongoing attack rather than preemptively stop them.
  • Mobile phones, tables and laptops connected to open networks become a hunting ground for hackers to harvest banking details through card payments.
    • jalipman

Not only is personal information stored but guests use these open networks for many different things allow hackers a direct link to the guests devices as well.
  • Worth billions of pounds, the hospitality industry is a perfect victim for cyber-criminals. Its make-up of luxury resorts and hotels alongside huge volumes of high net-worth individuals has fast become prey for hacker
  • While financial services and the public sector have been forced to endure an endless stream of cybercrime, the hospitality industry has also become a prime contender for hackers in the wake of its rich data-base.
    • jalipman

The constant influx of new information makes hospitality company databases prime targets for hackers.
  • No matter the size of the business, inefficient cyber support diverts crucial time from business activities and relationships with customers.
    • jalipman

Not allocating for proper cybersecurity not only puts you at risk but takes away from time you spend on business when you are dealing with potential or ongoing threats that would have been better addressed by a proper cyber security system.
  • With global business fighting relentlessly to survive against the chaotic threat of the Coronavirus, all industries are exposed to criminal cyber-threats, and so the security of highly sensitive data must be handled appropriately.
    • jalipman

In unprecedented times like we are currently going through things like cybersecurity will be put on the back burner in order to deal with issues at hand but this can create environments for cyber attacks.
  • British Airways and Marriott International are two major hospitality companies to be victims of high-profile breaches in recent memory. They serve as a stark reminder of the heavy costs faced when the safety of customers’ data is compromised.

Gale Academic OneFile - Document - The anti-Venmo? Banks' p-to-p payment product eschew... - 0 views

  • Talie Baker, an analyst at Aite Group, said that she does not think users are demanding a social network for P-to-P payments. "Most users are interested in security and ubiquity," she said in an email, referring to the overall size and scope of the payment network.
  • But over time, Zelle's partner banks hope to support a wide range of business-to-business and business-to-consumer payments that seem more likely to generate revenue. Participating banks are also hoping that the P-to-P service will result in more satisfied retail customers, who are less likely to leave for another bank.
    • jalipman

During the COVID19 pandemic this is especially true. A restaurant that can use venmo can create and literally contactless pickup of food as well as retailers can do this as well.
  • "If you owe money, you definitely want to show people that you paid, that you're not a deadbeat," said Crone, the CEO of Crone Consulting LLC in San Carlos, Calif.
    • jalipman

Venmo does leverage social pressures to pay which also can limit its market when "charging people on venmo"
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • oreover, as Venmo moves into in-store payments, its use of social media may offer a way for PayPal to monetize the app's growing popularity, Crone said. After all, when a social media user endorses a particular retailer, that thumbs-up is valuable to the merchant. So the merchant may be willing to pony up for the positive buzz.
  • So as we're thinking about the use cases for Zelle, sharing the bar tab for last weekend certainly is one of those. But also other use cases that wouldn't lend themselves to some of the comical social interaction that you see," she added.
  • Zelle's architects considered, but ultimately decided against, mimicking Venmo's marriage of payments and social media, according to Alexander.
    • jalipman

Zelle has placed there focus on security rather than the social aspect in order to reach an older market. It seems as if in the long run Zelle will be able to retain its market better when the social aspect of money sharing becomes an issue. (which in my opinion is almost inevitable)
  • t's one reason why the person-to-person payment app Venmo -- which encourages users to share spending habits with friends -- is so popular with the 18-to-34-year-old crowd.
    • jalipman

Venmo came in ahead of the curve in the digital banking market. Mainly targeting a younger demographic it has taken off. But this ahead of the curve mentality has allowed banks to create their own digital banking apps engineered towards the older markets.
  • Transaction volume for Venmo, which is owned by PayPal Holdings, Inc., has grown by at least 130% in each of the last four quarters.
    • jalipman

Venmo being the mainstream digital payment app allows it to continue to dominate. Additionally social pressures to use the app drive the market even further.
  • ts prospects also hinge on whether the big banks have made the right assessment about the willingness of middle-aged folks to mix payments data with their social networks.
    • jalipman

A continual problem with technology advancements is security. In addition to this older people are less willing to use technology and mixing those two together can create an environment where older people are not willing to make the change even if it is more convenient.
  • The successor to a lackluster venture called clearXchange, Zelle is courting adults ages 18 to 54 who already rely heavily on their mobile phones. All told, 103 million U.S. consumers fall into that category. "We would say we're moving P-to-P from millennials to mainstream," said said Lou Anne Alexander, group president of payments at Early Warning Services, the bank-owned company that is developing the system
    • jalipman

Zelle targets a larger demographic allowing it to target possible whole families which eventually would lead to it being the mainstream app overtaking Venmo.
  • But in rebranding and reintroducing a P-to-P payments service, the nation's biggest banks are targeting a broader demographic and betting that people who came of age in the 1980s and 1990s want to be more private about how they spend their money.
  • At the same time, Alexander pointed out that younger adults who have been early adopters of the technology are likely to shape the habits of their parents and other older consumers. "So absolutely we are not ignoring the millennials and their influence," she said.
    • jalipman

This has been mimicked for many things in new technology like smart phones. As well as many social media websites. The younger generation influence drives the market.
  • t's one reason why the person-to-person payment app Venmo -- which encourages users to share spending habits with friends -- is so popular with the 18-to-34-year-old crowd.

Going livestream: How in-person summits have become virtual events - 0 views

My thoughts exactly, there is a missing element
  • So how can a business possibly recreate that kind of experience online?
  • there’s been increased dependency on technology to help support business continuity
  • ...8 more annotations...
    • yvenisem

I think the reason for this is that many people don't have the funds or time to travel long distances, but this format is much more accessible. Plus, it was free so that helps lol
  • adding that the online event had more than three times the usual number of registrations
    • yvenisem

relates a lot to this week's discussion on relying on tech too much
  • (the virtual conference was free to attend this year, whereas it usually costs upwards of $1,000)
  • created 14 local events in various languages and time zones, with regional heads addressing their relevant markets.
    • yvenisem

This is definitely much more accessible. This can also do well in terms of revenue for future events
  • switching to being an online speaker isn’t quite the same. “You don’t have the body language, you don’t have the eye contact,” she explained.
    • yvenisem

This would be my main concerns in producing events. I feel like ther has to be a personal element to it instead of just looking at people through acomputer screen
  • vents organizers may be encouraged to film their speakers in a way that works better for a small-screen format, instead of the usual “dark room with a very small person,
    • yvenisem

this could be a hybrid thing
  • “While online events might seem less permanent, there’s actually a much higher chance that any misdemeanors or breaches of copyright or online regulation will be captured or stored.”
    • yvenisem

I never considered this, but this definitely has to be something to consider when in something like this
  •
One of the main reasons why I chose this article is because my industry is currently seein a huge shift in the way we do things that can either stay or have impressions in the industry after COVID. One of the main concerns when it came to in-person events going online is how we would be able to recreate the same experience. Several large events that see thousands of people had to convert to online platforms. For example, "in 2019, around 20,000 people attended SAP's Sapphire Now conference in Orlando". Imagine 20,000 people logging on to view the same same content an then some! In this case, the event saw larger audiences with "more than three times the usual number of registrations". Granted, the conference was free to attend this year. However, now that this conference was more accessible to people who in normal circumstance would be unable to attend due to time and fianancial constraints, it was a no-brainer that more people would attend. This bodes very well in terms of revenue for the future since if those extra 40,000 people enjoyed it, they would most likely be willing to pay for the service and consider the event and investment. I think the wider topic of the article is accessibility. Before technology, it was harder to bridge the gap between the haves and the have nots. Now that technology is becoming more accessible (in the first world), many are better able to see beneficial information. Not only that, but when considering the "14 local events in various languages and time zones", people are better able to cast wider nets. This article wasn't all good, however. One thing that many people have not adressed that I as an event professional am concerned about is the fact that going online is just not the same. A speaker said in an interview that it's harder to ready body language, which can impact how much a speaker is able to reach their audience. Another thing that has to be given intense consideration is the fact that there can be some legal ramifica

Juice it Up's new CEO started right before the corona virus hit. And while at first that seemed to be a daunting task, her goals ended up aligning with the needs of this new era: get better technology. For a mostly franchised brand, Taylor new that getting this tech up and running was going to be difficult, but also that it was going to be necessary to the success of the company. The "brand didn't need to change it's business model because most of their business came from to go order already," but Taylor found the company to be seriously lacking in technology. Her goal: a mobile POS system that would offer menu information, nutritional elements, the ability to order ahead, leave a tip, and schedule a pick-up. What is unique about this app and this system, is that it is not through a third-party system, which is what most restaurants are currently using. It opens up the potential for more companies, specifically large brands, to begin to do a similar thing. This will be an incredible save for profit margins if it proves to be successful, as the current crisis of third-party delivery and POS systems is wreaking havoc on our nation's restaurants.

Financial Statement Fraud Risk Escalates in Pandemic - CFO Journal. - WSJ - 1 views

  •
The article, "Financial Statement Fraud Risks Escalates in Pandemic" by Deloitte Editor focuses on the escalation of risk that is as a result of financial statements fraud. According to the report, the escalation is more persistent due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fraud occasions consist of three elements, mainly related to pandemics. Pressure due to money shortfalls and other setbacks brought about by the pandemic insert some strains to the organizations that may cause some liquidity problems and significantly affect shareholders' expectations (Deloitte, 2020). Opportunity is also an element of fraud events. The situation of the pandemic may push some organizations to consider some staffing changes to counter the problems brought about by the pandemic. The third element is the rationalization. In times of a pandemic, some individuals or organizations tend not to separate acceptable from unacceptable behaviors. Others engage in manipulative actions in the name of the crisis, which they would otherwise not consider. The article explains that keen examination needs to be done during revenue recognition. Some organizations may fabricate or misstate their revenues to prove their perseverance during a challenging business environment. Another financial reporting risk lies in allowances and reserves. The author states that keen scrutiny needs to be done on the organization's reserve accounts since most of them are based on estimates and mere judgments. The management may be tempted to manipulate these reserves ways to favoring their bottom line. Valuation and impairments also form a financial reporting risk for examination. During turbulent times, organizations are tempted to give false valuations on their assets; hence keen examination would be needed. Additionally, restructuring charges brings a financial report risk in that some organizations may seek to write off their underperforming assets. In other cases, a business may include costs associated with the pandemic a

Hotels: Are Your Cyber Defenses Ready for 2021? | Hospitality Technology - 0 views

  • Two of the top five biggest data breaches made public in 2020 were at hotel chains. Attackers stole personal information including names, emails and addresses from 5.2 million guests at Marriott and 10.6 million guests of MGM Resorts.
  • To ensure a swift recovery from COVID-19, the hospitality industry must shore up its cybersecurity protections — or risk more headline-making breaches in the future.
  • Risk is especially high at hotels because attackers have multiple points of entry.
  • ...14 more annotations...
  • Breaches undermine hospitality brands’ reputations and erode customer trust. Eighty-one percent of consumers will stop engaging with a brand after a breach, according to a 2019 study.
  • When it comes to cybersecurity, companies today have two options: Defend the fort or devalue the data. The former is the more traditional approach. By strengthening the digital “walls” around your data — via firewalls, intrusion detection, 24/7 monitoring and other security protections — the defend-the-fort approach works to keep attackers from accessing your systems at all.
  • However, one of the biggest vulnerabilities may be on the hotel grounds themselves.
  • hotels have multiple point of sale (POS) terminals across different locations, from the front desk to restaurants, all of which are connected to each other. If a POS device is not properly secured, attackers can use malware or other attack vectors to steal clear-text credit card numbers and other data.
  • POS attacks remain one of the most common causes of data breaches in accommodations and food services.
  • Guests may share their credit card numbers with the hotel in advance via a booking app or website, opening up the possibility of web-based attacks. Loyalty programs are another source of online vulnerability, with an estimated $1 billion a year lost to account fraud and related crimes.
  • One important and underutilized aspect of cyberdefense is employee training.
  • Make sure your employees use strong passwords and know how to spot fraud and spear phishing attacks. You may also want to limit employee access to confidential data, so if an account gets hacked, private guest information doesn’t go with it
  • You should also make sure your software is up to date with all security patches, as attackers often exploit known weaknesses in programs. Isolating POS devices from the rest of the network can also limit the damage from malware infections at that entry point.
  • it’s unlikely that even the strongest digital “walls'' will prevent all incursions. Defenses are important, but the ever-changing nature of technology means that new, hard-to-catch vulnerabilities will pop up all the time.
  • important to devalue your data, rendering it unusable to attackers who gain access to your systems. One way to do this is to implement point-to-point encryption (P2PE) by encrypting payment information from the moment it enters your network at the POS
  • Encrypted data is unintelligible to anyone who doesn’t have the right digital key. Implementing P2PE is the only way to ensure that clear-text payment data doesn’t fall into the hands of attackers targeting POS systems with malware.
  • Data that’s stored for the long term, like passport information or credit card numbers saved to a loyalty program, can also be devalued through tokenization. Data that’s tokenized gets replaced with an alphanumeric pseudonym, so the actual sensitive information isn’t stored on your servers. This method helps secure guest information beyond the initial transaction at the POS.
  • Hotels that reckon with their security vulnerabilities now will protect themselves from fines and other fallout from data breaches as business rebounds. They’ll also build deeper, more trusting relationships with customers by keeping their personal information secure. By strengthening security protections and devaluing their data, hotels can set themselves up for a brighter future.
  •
This article describes the vulnerabilities in the security systems of the hotel Industry. The POS system was recognized as one of the most vulnerable areas that are more targeted by hackers. This is due to the multiple stations where the POS systems are located on the premises of the hotel. Likewise having POS systems independent of the hotels security system left the system open to hackers. Two options to defending the cyber-defense, are digital walls and employee training. Digital walls works by keeping hackers from accessing the systems. Although even with a strong firewall it is recommended to implement point-to-point encryption (P2PE), this encrypts payment information of guest. the other is tokenization. This uses alphanumeric pseudonym to protect data stored for long periods of time. Another way to prevent cyberattacks is employee training, encourage the use of strong passwords an dhow to detect fraud and phishing attacks.

About iOS 13 Updates - 0 views

  •
Due to the current situation we are living with Covid-19 we are required to use a mask all the time in public places. One of the latest updates on IOS 13.5 that I found very helpful is that now our Iphones can be able to unlock with facial recognition while having the mask on. Before it was frustrating being in public to have to take off the mask so facial recognition could work and unlock my phone. Apple did a great job with this update and has become a most for Iphone users like me during these days.
