Restaurant operators offering 24 hr automated serivce. - 2 views

  •
I think this article goes along with our "Smartbar" discussion. The Smartbar may actually be useful in certain locations where a full time bartender may be too costly. There are obvious legal regulatory issues to contend, but at least some room for growth for the Smartbar. For other products like cupcakes, donuts or small bites, established restaurants are now tapping into the 24 hour convenience business model through the use of vending machines. I think this is a great idea for customers who want more variety than what we have been seeing at vending machines the past 10 or 20 years, which is potato chips, candy bars and nuts. For the company, this would give them more exposure and increased revenue stream at locations such as airports, hotels and hospitals where there is always people around. Some companies like Apple or Sony have been doing this for years. I can understand that they are selling a non-perishable good and the customer is ultimately only paying for the end product only. Restaurants are often involved with proving a level hospitality service as part of the product they sell and automation was not really in their best interest. But now with the explosion of Ipods and automated POS taking over the servers job, we may see more of these stand alone units serving customers. Overall, I think this is a business concept/technology that we are behind in. The article mentions that Japan has been using this concept to sell fresh food items and other items such clothing as well. From a business standpoint, given the increasing rise of competition, rent/property prices and variety of choices consumers have, these are some major recent factors which will propel this concept more.

The role of tourism security in economically challenging times - 0 views

  •
Discusses the overall importance of tourism security, not only at the airports but also in the area of travel.
  •
Despite some of the optimistic talk of global economic recovery, the highest likelihood is that the tourism industry still has several challenging months or even years ahead of it. Often when the economy is down we not only forget to be 'up' but we tend to cut back where we ought not to be cutting back. The same is true of communities throughout the world. For example, numerous communities have cut back on their marketing campaigns precisely during a period when they ought to be expanding these campaigns.

Dubai Hotels Struggle to Fill Jobs - 0 views

  •
This article brings to light the fact that hotels in Dubai are struggling to find the right staff to work for their hotels. As the industry grows, including rooms, airport arrivals, occupancy, revenue, etc., hotels are having a difficult time finding employees to meet the demand of the increasing hotel industry in Dubai, especially since the industry is known for low pay and long hours. Experts are now advising that more programs be made available for students in the hospitality industry in order to attract the right employees who are willing to work the long hours for low pay and still want to do the job because they love the field work. This rings true with any career because it's important to have employees who are dedicated and love what they do because they're attitude towards the industry and that particular job will ultimately reflect on their work and on the company's image.

8 reasons why proximity marketing will matter for retailers in 2011 | RetailCustomerExp... - 2 views

  • Proximity marketing exploits activities that consumers are already involved with — and enjoy — to offer retailers a new path to reach their audiences, affording a higher level of interactivity that didn’t exist before. Proximity marketing expands the scope of interactive marketing in public places — malls, food courts, cinemas, airports, etc. — to offer a more spontaneous and direct interaction. Think of it as taking location-based marketing to an even greater level of "local," and being contextually relevant in absolute terms. Proximity marketing allows retailers to leverage their strengths and create an even more memorable interaction for consumers and, by extension, motivate return visits and increase ROI.
  •
This article talks about the basics of proximity marketing, how every marketing campaign done with this can be review in real time. What is most interesting about this technology is that it can even inform you of those customers who accepted your message so you can save that info and use it in the future. This for me seems very invasive to the customers, laws need to be put in place to better monitor proximity marketing. For the retailer this is a easy way to reach the customers that are in the neighborhood and might become regulars at the business.
  •
The article highlighted is related to proximity marketing. The author stated that 2010 was the "year of the mobile", where people are accessing the internet more from their phones instead of a computer. The articles stated that it was believed that 2011 would be the year for proximity marketing; however, it didn't quite happen that way. The technology will eventually come but so far is not that popular yet. It is believe that this technology will be very effective to people that suffer with ADD and not attracted to static signage. The mobile marketing will be a great solution to interact with people with this type of condition. Another reason is that an ad from a store from the vicinity and only depends on foot traffic will be more prone to generate customers. The blue-tooth technology will be very favorable because the consumers that has it on is in some way accepting to be able to connect and doesn't incur any costs through the mobile carriers. Another advantage is that retailers would be able to record every number that the ad has been sent to and which ones were accepted or declines. That is another way to get to know your consumer. The difference between proximity marketing and traditional marketing is that it is done in real time; it is inexpensive to retailers by the elimination of delivery carriers and very fast. This is a very smart way doing marketing, but with every technology, there are downfalls. We need to avoid the marketing proximity to become an overload of overwhelming information coming through our cell phones as we walk down the street. Hopefully this technology will make retailers a little greener too.
  •
I agree how this would save the company money and avoid them having to pay for the costs of running ads in the paper, printing of coupons, flyers, radio advertising, etc However, this could be perceived as a risk because you run the risk of allienating your customers, some of who may not be technological fans. Others would just hate to be bombarded with incoming texts. Bluetooth can be very hit or miss, if your on the phone with someone else at the time does the ad break up your conversation and make you loose the call? Sometimes when you use blue tooth you can't even hear the other person when driving. I personally can't stand it and just won't use it. I may not even use my cell phone if this trend is going to continue. i dont think i would like it very much

Why your IT project may be riskier than you think - 0 views

  •
This article is focussed on the risk involved if the proper impact study is not undertaken prior to implementation of extensive IT projects. Several multinational companies were referenced in the article, highlighting failures with smooth implementation resulting in the loss of millions and sometimes billions. Below is a summary of some companies referenced in article and the impact of IT implementation gone wrong: 1. Levi Strauss: In 2003 Levi Strauss examined its technological capabilities and concluded that its systems were inadequate for its multi-national corporation operation within 110 countries. A budget of US$5 million was created for a system upgrade. Many challenges along the way resulted in the inability to sufficiently report financials resulted in three distribution canters in the USA closing for a week. As a result of this, the company lost US$200 million and the termination of the chief information officer in 2008. 2. Hong Kong Airport: IT problems resulting in glitches in flight information system and database for tracking cargo shipment resulted in a US$600 million loss between 1998 and 1999. 3. Hershey: About 10 years ago Hershey wanted to implement a new order taking system. Problems with implementation resulted in the inability of the company shipping US$100 million worth of candy in time for Halloween thus impacting the company's bottom-line of an 18.6% loss in earnings during the quarter. 4. Kmart: in 2000 Kmart embarked on aUS$1.4 billon IT modernization project. In the midst of the project Kmart discovered that the project had too many customized application which would result in an exorbitant maintenance costs. An additional US$600m was spent on integrating a supply chain management system. Failure of this project led to bankruptcy filing by Kmart in 2002. This resulted in the closure of 600 stores and the loss of over 60,000 jobs in the USA. 5. Auto windshield (UK): Auto windshield was considered to be the second largest auto glass c

Personal panic alarms part of contract for hotel staff in NYC - 0 views

  •
Changes are coming for New York City hotel workers. A proposal between the Hotel Association of New York and the New York Hotel Trades Council would equip hotel staffers with personal panic alarms. Employees like house keepers are calling for the extra safety measures for fear of being assaulted in a guest room. Concern is also circulating outside New York in places like Sacramento, California. The personal security devices were tested on students at California State University at San Marcos last year. I believe hotels will begin to implement more measures like this in large cities like New York. Similar to airports and large department stores, safety is a major concern. I believe the personal panic button is a great idea for any hospitality space that accommodates a large number of people.

I imagine this would help increase employee satisfaction etc. There is a real need for this and I could see major benefits from such technologies.
  •
I think this is really important to increase not only customers comfort but the people who work inside the system and provide this comfort. Feeling that you are important and everything is under conrol can make the life of hotel's staff.
  •
This article is about a personal panic button that hotel workers in New York City could soon be wearing or have on them during work, which in case of an emergency can call for help with just a push of the button. This new technology is coming about after many housekeepers were asking for better security, since many are worried about assaults from cleaning rooms by themselves, which the article says "is one of the dirty secrets of workplace violence in the hospitality industry." . Other Hotel workers from cities around the United States are also interested in this new device. The device is also being tested at a University for its students.
  •
I think this new proposal may draw people's attention to employees' safety issues within the hospitality industry. It is also important for hotels and restaurants to make sure that their employees work in an environment that is danger free and threats free. The panic button can provide the instant location of the staff and once if something goes wrong, the time for rescue will be shorten. It is really a beneficial proposal for the entire hospitality industry.
  •
Pending approval, personal panic alarms would be carried by staff members in all New York City hotels. These panic buttons would be carried by the staff member during their shift so that they are easily and quickly accessible should something happen. Fox News in Sacramento, CA reported that house keepers voiced their desire for more saftey measures to be put in place. Assaults on house keepers may be more common than people think. House keepers tend more often to be women and they tend to work alone or with only one other person. Hotels host many events in which guests may be drinking which in turn creates the potential for violent or inappropriate actions. Not only is the safety of guests important to the hospitality industry but safety of employees is paramount as well. Having personal panic buttons would give house keepers and workers alike more peace of mind should they encounter any uncomfortable or unsafe situation.

Tightening cruise ships' security: State of access control solutions onboard passenger ... - 2 views

  •
This article gives an overview of security considerations of a cruise liner. Initially it cites a comparison between cruise security concerns and that of a hotel, which are basically the same, such as secure doors to cabins (rooms), having an exact record of all passengers and onboard staff, as well as having surveillance such as cameras taking constant video recordings. Whereas hotels are mostly open to outside traffic, cruise ships are limited only to those who have purchased passage, are working there, or are conducting business onboard. This has led to boarding procedures which are as stringent and detailed as those conducted when passengers board a commercial airline. Safety concerns for cruise ships have been a forefront concern since the 1985 hijacking of the MS Achille Lauro (See next comment) which led to minimal security standards issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The tragic events of 9/11 compelled US issuance of an International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) to strengthen security protocols. This includes requirements that any "ship over 500 tons…not (be) allowed into the United States unless their last ports of call conformed to ISPS code." The ISPS code, however, involves minimal adjustment for cruise lines currently in compliance with IMO rules. Newer ships are being constructed to include the infrastructure for video fibre optics and metal detection equipment. State of the art equipment will have crew member's photo and data available to be checked with each swipe of their ID card. Biometric fingerprint detection equipment is another safety layer that is available, but is not currently in use, although it will certainly be put into place promptly if a major incident occurs. The odds of such a major incident are high when considering the volume of cruise passengers in the last decade. Since other commercial ships have witnessed attacks, cruise lines are strongly advised to progressively

Study Reveals Hotel Guests Mobile Device Habits | News | Hospitality Magazine (HT) - 1 views

  • Today’s travelers are armed with three or four mobile devices to help them stay connected to office and home. They are more inclined to carry a tablet than a laptop. And, when these business travelers communicate with the home front from their hotel room, they are most likely do so with a video chat
  • They travel with 3-4 mobile devices.
  • For friends and family, nothing beats face time.
  •
Very interesting article here regarding the habits of hotels guests who used mobile devices during travel. It opened my mind to how dependent on this technology we are. The project was completed by Four Points by Sheraton, a brand by Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Inc. Over the duration of the experiment, 6,000 people were polled. What I found to be the most interesting fact in this study was that the majority of us use 3 - 4 mobile devices whenever we travel. If you think to when you were younger, you had your walkman and the hotel phone.
  •
When we travel we just grab all of our electronics and hit the road not even thinking about how many different items we are taking with us and why. This is exactly why at airports people get so aggravated waiting at security lines; people have to take each item out of their bag to go through the x-ray machine. Now if we would just leave 2 of the 4 items at home the time it takes to get through security would be cut in half!

Great article, Craig! I agree that this is a great app for hotel managers to integrate into their company because although they may need to invest money to create these apps, the incoming revenue produced from the app will be well worth it. Tourists usually go on leisurely vacations to relax and be pampered. This app is just another guest service tool that allows the customer to do what they'd like from the comfort of their bed or tanning chair.

Travel agents know something you don't - CNN.com - 0 views

  • In an age where travelers of all ages turn to the Internet to book flight and hotel reservations, modern travel agents are offering expert advice on cruises and tour packages to far-flung locales, advice on the best a particular city has to offer, exclusive perks, hidden discount prices and the security of an adviser in case of inconvenience or disaster.
  • Successful agents know that their customers have access to lots of travel information -- often too much -- and want time-saving guidance, exclusivity and security in a complicated world.
  • It's true that there are fewer U.S. travel agents today: 105,910 in 2010 versus 111,000 in 2006, according to the American Society of Travel Agents. And there are fewer agencies: 14,800 agencies in 2010, compared with 18,850 in 2006, according to ASTA.
  •
Arthur & Alex Beach were onboard the Costa Concordia when it began to sink. They were taken from one place to another on bus and train, until they go to an airport outside of Rome where they were able to call their son to call their Travel Agent, Jackie Berube, where she helped them book a flight out the next day. Many people these days have access to the internet where they can look at the information themselves. There are also many people that would like to save the trouble and call a Travel Agency to help them find specific information. Although when the Economy isnt doing so well, they begin to drop Financially because people are traveling less. Travel agents used to rely heavily on a percentage of the price of an airline ticket, now they often charge flat fees for airline ticket purchases or creating a custom trip package.
  •
Some travel agents has made a shift in the way they do business. Since most agencies have went out of business after airlines took away their commissions and consumers started to shop online, they had to start offering more service than the internet can provide.
