Title: Helping Your Child Through a Divorce Author: Michelle New, PhD Date Published: Updated 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This site if very helpful because it gives several examples of how one can tell ones child that they are going through a divorce. It also goes through the different ages in children and how they might react to the divorce. Overall, this article is great for helping one cope with a divorce as well as ways to help your child cope with a divorce without making much damage. How this influenced my thinking: My parent are still together, so I was never exposed to any divorce issues, but I do remember having friends whose parents were divorced so I knew it was a hard process especially for my friends. Because I don't talk to my high school friends anymore, I honestly wasn't sure what the negative outcomes were of a divorce, but after reading this site all of the pain and sorrow from my friends came back. Everything that was mentioned especially about teens reactions were the way that my friends reacted during their parent's divorce. Credibility: This site seems to be credible.

It discusses how to break the news to them, giving them consistency, how to parent as single parents, and not bringing arguements to them. title: 10 Strengths to a happy marriage Author: unknown Date: 2010 Why relevant and summary: I really liked this article it was brief interesting and to the point. It is a reflection on a study conducted on more than 21,000 couples in all the United states and gives 10 easy tips on what to do to improve your marriage and also gives the top 10 reasons that cause problems for a marriage. I think it is an easy piece to read for everyone at every stage of their married life. How it changed my thinking: Most of the tips are common sense that everyone will agree to it but more than often we fail to follow; reading them kind of reinforces their message. Credibility of source: The website "first things first" is a non profit grass roots organization that came to be as a tool to help the residents of Hamilton county , Tennessee. Apparently they have a high divorce rate and other relationship and children rearing issues and this website offers advice, support and education on hoe to deal with family problems on a day to day basis. Dozens of books are written every year about the things that go wrong in marriage. Now one of America's foremost marriage researchers has evaluated the things that go right in marriage. David H. Olson, founder of Life Innovations and one of the creators of the Prepare/Enrich marriage enrichment tools, has surveyed 21,501 married couples in all 50 states to identify the top ten strengths of happy marriages.

This is perfect for my paper since it tells me exactly what I need to know. She goes from physical changes all the way to the changes on the inside of the body and mentally as well. How This Influenced My Thinking: This just enlightened me on all the changes that I am eventually going to go through as I age. Credibility of Source: It is a newspaper article with an author and date and information seems accurate as it complements our textbook.

How This Influenced My Thinking: I already knew about it, but actually having a study to support this claim, made it even more reliable. I think studies like this influence future parents in their quest to stimulate their babies learning in the womb. Credibility of Source: It was publish in the health and science section of the New York Times, and the study is conducted by a University.

Babies hear their mother's voice all the time after about 30 weeks. Once the baby is born he/she knows their mother's voice because it is so familiar. The babies that are involved in the studies have pacifiers that have tape recorders embedded in them to record the sucking noise. How This Influenced My Thinking: I have always heard that it is good for babies to listen to classical music because it increases their learning abilities, but to know that prenatal learning is important and has a positive effect blew my mind. Credibility of Source: Credible, it is from a newspaper, in which the article is peer reviewed and it talks about research.

The article talks about the development of the child's reasoning and breaks them down into stages that are correlated to the individual's age. The author doesn't necessarily brush upon how the child's developmental reasoning is influenced but more the basic stages of development. How this influenced me: This article guided me in the right direction as far as research methods go. Credibility of source: I believe it's pretty credible.

Provided a scenario with which to observe moral reasoning and the different approaches it could've been addressed by. How This Influenced My Thinking: I was able to observe or review instances where my decisions reflected and displayed each one of the stages of moral development. Title: Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory Author: Dede Paquette and John Ryan Date Published: 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: Explains Bronfenbrenner's theory and connects it to modern child development and compares this to child development when the economy was more industrial, less technological. It also explains Bronfenbrenner's concerns with our technological world. The 5th page looks at the human body as a part of a person's microsystem, which was fascinating, especially since the textbook doesn't seem to consider this. How This Influenced My Thinking: Introduced the idea of the human body as being part of the microsystem - new to me! Also, I learned that this model can play a big role in influencing public policies, which is refreshing because as a student, it's easy to get caught up in this thinking that the classroom stuff isn't relevant or doesn't easily apply to the real world… but it can! Credibility of Source: Pretty good - the work cites a lot of educational resources, and I read the company profile, which seems to be run by qualified people.

As well as stating what the theory is, the site also goes over in detail, all the different systems associated with Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory. There is also an illustration with various terms that provides links to sites that explain the implications of each theory. How it influenced my thinking: This site influenced my thinking in a positive way because it broke down what each system was, what it entailed, and gave examples of what was being discussed. Credibility of source: The source is very credible and is riddled with citations and works cited pages. The link to it also ends in usd.edu which means it is probably a site made by colleges for colleges.

It explain what to expect the question to be at certain stages and how much information to give and how to present it. how has this influenced my thinking: I have a 7 and a 9 year old and I am very interested to know as much as possible about this topic. I was very surprised to read how the professionals contributing to this article find it a OK to explain to an 8 year old the basic concept of conception. credibility of source: it was published on the "American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry" website.

How This Influenced My Thinking: This article gave me a more in depth perception on how the choices we making in our middle adulthood can effect the life expectancy of our life. It made a good point that if you have compulsive thoughts about aging you will start to drive yourself crazy - a thought that will make you feel like you are living to the tic-toc of the clock. LaVoie Date Published: 2008 Why Relevant: This is a research article from the journal of research in personality which is a great source to begin with in regards to personality theory. This research article is a great example of the scientific research method and a great example of a longitudinal study. Its focus is also relevant to my topic which is identity formation and more specifically measures adult's readiness to change and its influence on identity formation How this influenced my thinking: I found the age range of the participants 22-60 to be interesting. It shines a light on the fact that identity it always changing no matter what age and stage in life a person is. I also found it interesting that they came up with two ways to measure readiness to change and that they discovered this to be a player in identity formation during adulthood. Credibility:High

I had never really considered any other type of birth besides medicated birth in a hospital, but it was very interesting to read about the benefits of water birth. The author encourages finding toys that support development across all domains - cognitive development, fine motor, gross motor, language, etc. How this influenced my thinking: When I first sat down to right the short critical thinking assignment on cognition and toys, it did not even occur to me to write about home-made toys such as a simple first puzzle made out of a muffin tin and some small objects, yet in reality, things found around the house make some of the best toys - ones that really engage babies and toddlers and are truly beneficial to child development. How this influenced my thinking: I found it very interesting that Bowlby thought that there is a link between separations with the mom at an early age and maladjustments later on. Credibility of Source: Lesley is a psychologist and has a Ph.D and all of her information seemed to be very accurate.

How This Influenced My Thinking: I have always thought that no matter what the parents do the children involved in divorces will feel the repercussions and that there is nothing that parents can do to fix it. This false belief that I have had is untrue-many children that are provided stable,secure, and loving homes after divorce learn to cope and turn out to be just fine.
