How it influenced my thinking: It made me wonder if my personality trait that are similar to my parents came from them genetically or if it is similar because that is what i grew up around. Credibility of source: This article seems somewhat credible, though i didn't see any references.

Title: Nature vs Nurture: Outcome Depends on Where You Live Author: Nick Collins Date Published: 12 June 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This study is actually quite relevant, but I ranked it '6' simply due to the fact that it is based solely on research done in the UK. This article outlines a recent study that compared 6759 pairs of identical and non-identical twins across the UK, in the hopes of determining whether their genes or their environment was more important. The outcome: it depends where you live. Some areas were dubbed 'environemental hotspots' for certain traits, where in other areas the same traits were purely caused by genetics. Be sure to see the video maps at the bottom of the article. How This Influenced My Thinking: I think the nature vs nurture debate is rather subjective. Much of it is based in opinion, but this particular study shows that many things can impact our phenotype. I'm of the opinion that both genetics and environment contribute. For example, I met my biological father for the first time when I was 28 years old. We were surprised to discover that although we were literally strangers, we look very much alike, both have an affinity for foreign languages, both enjoy traveling and adventure, and we enjoy similar types of food. Additionally, I found out that my grandfather was an oral surgeon in Holland during WWII. This was particularly interesting because I've always had a mild fascination with dentistry and oral hygiene! The author gives many examples for each side and how nature and nurture work together. How This Influenced My Thinking: It really opened my mind to seeing both sides of the debate. Credibility of Source: This article was posted to a psychology website and contained a great number of references, I see this as a very credible source.

How This Influenced My Thinking: Listening to real people tell their story on being twins and a part of a study of how nature vs. nurture has impacted them individually has contributed greatly to my understanding.

This video argues that stroke paralysis, and phantom pains could be "learned" behaviors and not innately biological. How This Influenced My Thinking: In writing my paper I discuss traumatic brain injury in the developing children and how it influences processes. This video delves deeper into neurological development and behaviors which may be more of a product of environment than biology alone. It is a great article about the findings of the Human Genome Project that analyzes and lists the reason why we should take very seriously the role of environment into human development. How This Influenced My Thinking: It has given me a different perspective on how I see disease, illness and good health. Credibility of Source: It is published on NOVA, and the author is a doctor of genetics.

Date Published: 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: This article is very relevant because it discusses how nature and nurture can play a role in the human development. The authors do so by discussing how schizophrenia can be both due to nature and nurture by giving examples. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article showed me how both nature and nurture can effect the human development and we cat rule out one for the other. Credibility of Source: This source was found on ebscohost and is from the journal "Perspectives in Psychiatric."

Title: Genes vs. Environment Author: University of Edinburgh Date Published: May 16, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article provides information on over 800 sets of experiments that were done to prove how genes played a more important role in development than the environment. How This Influenced My Thinking: This made me want to conduct my own research or do my own study on twins who were separated at birth to see how identical their characteristics were after five or ten years of being apart. That would help me see for myself if genetics really do have a greater inpact than environment does on development. Credibility of Source: This source is credible because the information was derived from universities, journals, and other research organizations and they have references to all the information they used.

How it Influenced My Thinking: there are certain times during development that "nurture" could have an influence on the likelihood of being involved in crime, and some are genetically pre-disposed to be more violent. overall, it is a complex subject, but i believe both play a role in development. Title: Genetics Author:QLD Science teachers Date published: ND Why relevant and summary: This site discusses genetics and many of the terms we were introduced to in our text and in class. It goes over dominant and recessive genes, what alleles are, phenotypes, genotypes and much more. It provides you with examples and definitions of words, and walks you through how to determine if a trait is dominant or recessive. How it influenced my thinking: It influenced my thinking by helping me see the difference between things like phenotypes and genotypes, as well as providing pictures and diagrams to further help with my understanding. Credibility of source: The site is obviously made by science teachers but it doesn't say who, or where they are from. I'd say this site is credible because it seems to provide you with good and accurate information, but you probably can't use it as a source for a research paper.

It briefly states the pros and cons of breastfeeding and bottle feeding. This site will be very helpful if one is doing their paper on Breastfeeding and culture. How This Influenced My Thinking: I took a child development class a few years ago, so this article definitely helped me remember the pros and cons of breastfeeding and bottle feeding. Credibility of Source: This website is from the American Pregnancy Association so I definitely think this page is credible due to the name of the site and because it is an organization.

Eastern cultures believe that struggling through a problem is "good" and shows emotional strength. They believe intelligence is something that anyone can obtain through hard work and persistence. Western culture tends to view intelligence as innate. And if you have to struggle at something, then you're simply not good at it, and that's that. How This Influenced My Thinking: Once this was pointed out to me, it seemed very apparent to me. Considering I grew up with an Asian mom and many Asian friends, I felt that this generalization held some truth to it.

It makes sense and explains how hte theory was tested. How It Influenced My Thinking: I remember watching a TV show a while ago that showed this phenomenon in monkeys of some kind. I recall that this was new information to me, however I was not surprised. It makes total sense. Nature is brilliant. Credibility of Source: Very credible. The source is from an article in Scientific American

Title: How people make their own environments: a theory of genotype → environment effects Author: Sandra Scarr and Kathleen McCartney Date Published: April 1983 Why Relevant and Summary: This is relevant because it goes into much further detail about the genotype → environment effects theory compared to the book. This article proposes that a child's genotype can "directly affect its rearing environment," which is a point that was not as explicit in the textbook. Overall, this article emphasizes a greater role of genotype influence in the process of human development. How This Influenced My Thinking: This influenced my thinking by taking on a more opinionated perspective on the genotype → environment effects theory. The class textbook takes on a very objective approach to explaining, and this article takes it a step further by adding onto it. Although this article is outdated, it still provided me with a new train of thought. I found this to be an interesting article, but at times, hard to read. Credibility of Source: Very good (though outdated).
