How this influenced my thinking: Although this journal was very brief It did help me get a sense of what disengagement theory is. It gave some examples that went with the key ideas so that made it helpful. Credibility: seems credible since the author has a Ph D

Title: A review of successful aging models: Proposing proactive coping as an important additional strategy Author: Carolijn Ouwehand, Denise T.D. de Ridder, Jozien M. Bensing Date Published: Aug. 3, 2006 Why relevant and summary: This is a really great look into aging successfully and what that process entails. It delves into selective optimization with compensation. The authors argue that proactive coping - attempting to prevent potential stressors that are the cause of this decrease in resources - may be a valuable strategy for successful aging. The authors also present this theory as a method of postponing disengagement from daily activities. How this influenced my thinking: I have not given much thought to aging, although I know it is happening and will continue to happen. I've always just kind of viewed the elderly with a distant form of respect coupled with a bit of sorrow. Let's face it, who wants to get old? Yet, this will happen to all of us unless (god forbid) some unforseen tragedy strikes first. Reading about ways to gracefully and successfully age and avoid or postpone disengagement, will go a long way as people enter older adulthood. When I reach older adulthood, I hope to be as active as that 106 year old man who started running marathons in his 80s!

Diabetes can be affected by age, race, gender and family history. How this influenced my thinking:In terms of age, race and gender, this hits home because this affects my dad. How this influenced my thinking: I have read through Chapman's book and found it quite helpful. I think this is a great resource for anyone in a relationship. How this influenced my thinking: Speaker, Eugster's advice flys in the face of socially acceptable behaviors, such as retirement. His life examples are provoking. It tells some of the struggles of associated with careing for your parent who lives with you as well as gives some statictics about elderly living with their children How This Influenced My Thinking: I didn't realize how common it was for elderly parents to live with their children. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article showed when, how, and why the BMI method was established, and its shortcomings for accurately assesing body fatness. Title: Obesity in Children and Adolescents Author: Robert Ferry Jr., Md Date Published: No date Why Relevant and Summary: This article describes causes of obesity and preventions of raising an obese child. It gives facts about child obesity and lays out the complications or repercussions of being obese as a child or adolescents. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article has influenced my thinking by discussing so many factors that influence a child's weight and doesn't blame the parent as being a careless or lazy parent rather it points to specific factors, such as socioeconomic status and genetics. Credibility of Source: This source is credible. It was written by a doctor and is on emedicine.com

How this influenced my thinking: This information strengthened my awareness about how important it is for  a caregiver to take care of themselves. Credibility of source: this information supported previous information and sources I was already familiar with.

Why Relevant and Summary: This article is very relevant because it discusses what learning takes place within the womb and actually gives a great example of what a mother can do while she is pregnant to help this learning. How This Influenced My Thinking: It really helped me understand how learning can take place within the womb. Credibility of Source: It seems credible!! Just a website, though.

Title: Importance of prenatal sound and music Author: Giselle E Whitwell Date Published: It doesn't say Why Relevant and Summary: This was an amazing article! It was talking about the sound decibel of conversations or music outside of the womb. She goes to talking about how a baby might respond when the mother is in a certain environment and sometimes, what the effects may be after birth. How This Influenced My Thinking: While some of this is common knowledge, I never really knew or understood the importance of sound and how detrimental it can be in later stages of childhood. I see it now in my own children. I played a lot of music when I was pregnant and my kids love listening to it and dancing to it. Sometimes, you just don't think about these things. Credibility of Source: It's posted on an Association of Prenatal and Health. I don't think they would give false information.

It also gives tips on what should be eating. As well, it gives you information on the proper amount a weight should be gained. How this influenced my thinking: This has influenced my way of thinking because I didn't know that have pregnancy there still should be a certain way to get your nutrition back in order. Title:What babies learn in the womb Author:Laura Flynn Mccarthy Date Published:nd Why Relevant and Summary:This article is relevant because it discusses how newborns prefer mom's voice over someone elses, proving that infants can distinguish between voices. This article discusses a study done on one day old newborns. They are given pacifiers and depending on the sucking pattern, they start the recording of mom's voice or another person's voice. After twenty minutes, they learned to use the sucking pattern that started the recording of mom's voice. How This Influenced My Thinking:Babies are born learning. Clearly they understand more than people realize. It is up to us to stimulate and progress their learning. Credibility of Source:This comes from parenting.com so I seems credible, however, their are no citations or references.

Title: Prenatal Development Author: Richard Parncutt Date Published: 2006 Why Relevant and Summary: This resource discusses prenatal development with a focus on the fetal sound environment. This is relevant because it directly discusses prenatal development and care. It also touches upon the emotional and physiological aspects of communication with a developing baby by using sound. How This Influenced My Thinking: I had no idea how much of an influence sounds had on a developing baby, and how early the influence begins. Credibility of Source: Excellent. Author is a professor who specializes in psychology of music.

How This Influenced My Thinking:It has made me more aware of how learning is very important even before birth. Credibility of Source:High

Title: Applications and Utility of Urie Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory Author: Brian Lewthwaite (ed.) Date Published: Spring 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This journal from the Manitoba Education Research Network, summarizes several research studies that apply Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory. One of the studies, The Importance of Local Environment for Promoting Student Engagement in Learning by Janet McVittie and Danette Senterre, is particularly interesting and relevant. This is a direct application of how the microsystems outside the classroom affect the microsystem of the classroom, and how the mesosystems and exosystems affect classroom engagement. When children come into the classroom, they bring with them the values and habits of their exosystem and participate in their classroom based on how they are situated in their other microsystems. (McVittie & Senterre) How This Influenced My Thinking: Based on personal experiences, I can understand how our circumstances in our mesosystems and Microsystems can affect our performance in school. At the age of 14, I became and orphan when my only parent died. In retrospect, this event and the subsequent events that resulted from it deeply affected my academic progress. In other words, the tragic events in my family microsystem had a major impact on my school microsystem, as well as on my various mesosystems. Credibility of Source: The University of Manitoba Centre for Research in Youth, Science Teaching and Learning seems like a highly credible source.

Title: Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development Author: Devan Udall Date Published: June 25, 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: The information provided in this video is a clear, factual presentation of Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development. In chapter eight of our Human Development textbook we will be discussing adolescence and will go over theories surrounding morality, Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development is one of them. This video gives a brief introduction to Kohlberg's research and professional career. It presents The Stages of Moral Development as well as recorded interviews illustrating the Heinz Dilemma experiment. How This Influenced My Thinking: I found this reference video supporting some of my theories surrounding moral development. However, as I was doing more research I realized how many variables were not being considered in Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development. As I challenged Kohlberg's theory on its broader application I thought about what research methods could be used to provide supportive evidence. Credibility of Source: I have found additional reference material that supports the information provided in this video.
