Title: Identity formation Author: Rice and Dolgen Date published: 2002 Why relevant and summary: This article was a good summary of identity formation and a good in-depth look at James Marcia's four identity status' that make up his theory of identity formation. How this influenced my thinking: I have always been intrigued about what makes people who they are and why some have such a strong personality or sense of who they are while others seem lost as to who they are. This article made me think that mabe the amount of dramatic experiences one faces creates their personality or who they want to be. Credibility of source: I think this came from a book, seems credible most of the info was very similar to wikipedia.

It goes in depth on identity formation stages, regarding politics, religion, a vocational goal and more clearly defined sex roles. How this influenced my thinking: I can relate to it because I can relate to some of the stages and understand them better. I also became more informed. Credibility of Source: It seems credible I believe it came from a book perhaps even a textbook.

Title: Ecological Systems Author: David Nollmeyer Date Published: n.d. Why Relevant and Summary: Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory is clearly stated and explained with examples. The analogies and summaries were helpful to understand the ecological systems better. How This Influenced My Thinking: This journal helped me understand everything a little bit better to where I can think more. I was able to actually think about what I wanted to say and how to say it without being blocked from the unknowns. Credibility of Source: This journal pulled information from other resources and cited them. So I believe it is credible.

The article talks about the development of the child's reasoning and breaks them down into stages that are correlated to the individual's age. The author doesn't necessarily brush upon how the child's developmental reasoning is influenced but more the basic stages of development. How this influenced me: This article guided me in the right direction as far as research methods go. Credibility of source: I believe it's pretty credible.

Why Relevant and Summary: Explains Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development, compared and contrasted to those of Piaget's beliefs and proposals. Provided a scenario with which to observe moral reasoning and the different approaches it could've been addressed by. How This Influenced My Thinking: I was able to observe or review instances where my decisions reflected and displayed each one of the stages of moral development. Title: Guided Participation Author: Zeynep Isik-Ercan & Susan Golbeck - The Gale Group Date Published: 2009 Why Relevant & Summary: Not only explains what Guided Participation is, but also it's roots from both Vygotsky & Barbara Rogoff from her book "Apprenticeship in Thinking." How This Influenced My Thinking: It elaborated upon the information from the textbook, explained how social interaction plays a role in cognitive development, and the origins of the guided participation concept. Credibility of Source: Great - lots of references at the bottom of this article.

The article talks about how guided participation helps the child to achieve their goals. How this influenced my thinking: Helps me to realize the method of teaching I can do for my children so they will teach others the same way. Credibility of Source: There is a bibliography at the end to cite their sources that are equivalent to the sources of theory used.

Title: Using Toys to Support Infant-Toddler Learning and Development Author: Gabriel Guyton Date Published: September 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This article discusses how caregivers can select and even make (using random household materials) age appropriate toys to support and enhance cognitive development. The author encourages finding toys that support development across all domains - cognitive development, fine motor, gross motor, language, etc. How this influenced my thinking: When I first sat down to right the short critical thinking assignment on cognition and toys, it did not even occur to me to write about home-made toys such as a simple first puzzle made out of a muffin tin and some small objects, yet in reality, things found around the house make some of the best toys - ones that really engage babies and toddlers and are truly beneficial to child development. Credibility of source: This article is from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), thus seems highly credible.

How This Influenced My Thinking: This article gave clear and concise information as to what development is occurring and at what age. Credibility of Source: 7- Published by the credible agency, NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children)

Title: Lev Vygotsky Author: Saul McLeod Date Published: 2007 Why Relevant and Summary: Talks about Vygotsky and the theories that he created. It also has a good comparison between Vygotsky and Piaget. How This Influenced My Thinking: It was good additional material that went more in depth on the topic, and had some information that the textbook did not cover. Credibility of Source: Good - the author is a professor at Wigan and Leigh college.

The effects of Vygotsky's theory is presented and there is also a video that talks about the differences of both theories. How This Influenced My Thinking: This helped me know that children should have somewhat of independence and freedom to learn skills that'll benefit them in the future. Date Published:Jan 6, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: It gives a nice overview of what exactly ADHD (and also ADD) is, what symptoms there are and how to work with it. it also gives interesting facts about how long it may have been around, and how many people are diagnosed with it. How this Influenced my Thinking; This just gave me a few extra bits of information about ADHD and its history, i am already familiar with it, as i have a younger brother who was diagnosed with it. Credibility of Source: The authors have degrees, and it is on a credible website about many varying aspects of psychology.

How it Influenced my Thinking: I was really surprised by the number of children in america that have ADHD. It says on average one student in each classroom will have it. Credibility of Source: Seems like a very credible source.

How This Influenced My Thinking: The up-to-date research regarding the history, treatments, and causes of ADHD of this site have been illuminating and helpful. Credibility of Source: 7- Sources are cited at the bottom of articles, from credible sources.

Title: Social Development Author: Growing Miracles Date Published: 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: It's relevant because it talks about the social development and all the aspects of what a toddler learns in this stage of life. It talks about communicating, sharing, putting the child in home settings and setting limits for the child. How This Influenced My Thinking: It influences my thinking because it makes me want to go back to when my children were small so that I can teach them differently than how they were taught. Credibility of Source: I think it's credible because even though it was reprinted with permission, the information is similar to that of research.

How this influenced my thinking: I always knew children who are overweight are more likely to be made fun of, but i was surprised at how obesity has doubled in children over the past 20 years. Title: Peer Relations in Middle Childhood Author: Blume & Zembar Date: n.d. Why Relevant and Summary: This article explains how friendship is important in middle childhood. Whether or not someone likes you or dislikes you can really make or break a person. Friends provide all the needs the one self can use at that time and in the future. For one of them being a need for survival because in middle childhood friendship is based on people liking you which then determines their popularity status. Also discussed in this article is the individual need for success, power, status, approval, autonomy, and etc. It also expresses the concerns of rejection in children at this age and it affects them. How this influenced my thinking: This helped my understanding of why it is important for us to connect with others and increase our social skills. I have found a new understanding of the word friendship from this article. Credibility: Seems credible because they cited quotes.

The habit forming patters of socialization developed at an early age impact how we relate to people as we become older. How this influenced my thinking: I was not aware how big of an impact peer relations/friendships in middle childhood had on adults. Credibility of source: seems very credible. I think it is an easy piece to read for everyone at every stage of their married life. How it changed my thinking: Most of the tips are common sense that everyone will agree to it but more than often we fail to follow; reading them kind of reinforces their message. Credibility of source: The website "first things first" is a non profit grass roots organization that came to be as a tool to help the residents of Hamilton county , Tennessee. Apparently they have a high divorce rate and other relationship and children rearing issues and this website offers advice, support and education on hoe to deal with family problems on a day to day basis. Dozens of books are written every year about the things that go wrong in marriage. Now one of America's foremost marriage researchers has evaluated the things that go right in marriage. David H. For example, Dowling says, "go to bed angry if you want to" because you're better off getting a good night's sleep before tackling the conflict again. Another good tip is to remember that every relationship is unique and it is damaging to compare yours to other relationships. I think the other gives some pretty solid, yet basic marriage advice that couples considering marriage should read. How this influenced my thinking: I have been married and divorced, and am in another relationship that is progressing toward marriage. I hope to avoid the mistakes made in my first marriage, so articles like this one apply directly to my personal life. However, no matter how good the advice is, you've got to make sure you're marrying someone you can absolutely be with through thick and thin.
