The European Commission (EC) has outlined a host of proposals to update its energy strategy, boosting energy efficiency and security in the region, while reducing emissions. The new measures are needed to reduce Europe’s reliance on energy imports, which currently make up over half of the region’s usage, help address rising prices and ensure that the region meets its 20-20-20 targets, said Commission President José Manuel Barroso.
The European Commission (EC) has published a voluntary code of conduct for running an energy efficient data centre. The guidelines, recommendations and best practices could reduce energy consumption by up to 20%.
“Australia is an energy-efficiency laggard among developed nations and if the Government is to deliver on its election promise of putting Australia ‘at the forefront of OECD energy efficiency improvement’ it needs decisive efficiency initiatives in addition to an emissions trading scheme,”
The paper indicates that Australia has largely untapped its energy saving potential – up to around 70% in the residential and commercial sector and up to 46% in the manufacturing sector.
A consortium of four electricity distributors is rolling out Echelon’s smart meter to 90,000 homes in France.Echelon’s Networked Energy Services (NES) meters allow the amount of electricity produced as well as that consumed to be measured. This allows the meters to be used with renewable microgeneration technologies as well.
By 2020, the manufacture, distribution and usage of IT equipment could reach 3% of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions – more than aviation and twice that of current UK levels, according to figures from the consultants McKinsey.
The Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology offers
flexible and distance learning for study at
home or in your workplace in low carbon sustainable energy. These courses enable you to
participate without taking time away from work to attend
a residential course, and save on the costs of traveling
to and living at the University. But, for maximum flexibility,
it is also possible to combine your home or work-based
learning with one or more of our residential modules at
Loughborough.
With input from people around the world -- much of it on this website -- an international group of leading technological thinkers were asked to identify the Grand Challenges for Engineering in the 21st Century. Now their conclusions are revealed on this website.
The Dutch and Danish power grid operators have announced they are to carry out a feasibility study into the possibility of an underwater electricity cable between the two countries, reports ANP news service.
The two firms say the so-called Cobra cable will facilitate the use of renewable power.
'Strong connections between European countries can significantly increase how much wind power can be distributed on European grids,' Peter Jorgensen, one of the directors of Enereginet is quoted as saying.
On Thursday the NorNed cable between the Netherlands and Norway – at 580 kms the longest underwater power cable in the world – was officially opened by the Dutch economic affairs minister Mara van der Hoeven. The cable has been operational since May.
For years, I was a public transit aficionado, constantly trumpeting the benefits of buses. I have to admit, though, that it didn’t take me long to swear off buses (and their rising costs to ride) forever, in favor of a totally free bicycle that could spirit me off to anywhere–back alleys and unique routes included.
Appearing on PRI’s The Takeaway with John Hockenberry, Golden was asked how he would advise Congress and the upcoming Obama administration on the proposed U.S. multi-billion dollar auto industry bailout. He responded by unequivocally advocating the avoidance of “any further investments into the old combustion engine model” arguing that the country needs to quickly move past hybrids by leap-frogging “to an all-electric platform.”

TED was initiated by REEEP (Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership) as a registry of available courses and training in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency.
The Catalogue currently contains a brief description and contact information of more than 400 courses, educational, vocational and university, on renewable energy and energy efficiency.
This training package on “Sustainable Energy Regulation and Policymaking for Africa” provides an introduction to the key issues relating to the energy market and energy regulation, as they affect sustainable energy (energy efficiency, cogeneration and renewable energy).
