That's between 15 and 20 percent of the annual electricity consumption for the average U.S. home.

Technology Review: A Design for Cheaper Wind Power - 0 views

  • FloDesign Wind Turbine, a spin-off from the aerospace company FloDesign based in Wilbraham, MA, has developed a wind turbine that could generate electricity at half the cost of conventional turbines. The company recently raised $6 million in its first round of venture financing and has announced partnerships with wind-farm developers. The company's design, which draws on technology developed for jet engines, circumvents a fundamental limit to conventional wind turbines. Typically, as wind approaches a turbine, almost half of the air is forced around the blades rather than through them, and the energy in that deflected wind is lost. At best, traditional wind turbines capture only 59.3 percent of the energy in wind, a value called the Betz limit.

The U.S. will be getting its first offshore wind farm thanks to Cape Wind's long-awaited approval, and now plans for the first freshwater offshore wind farm in the U.S. have been announced as well. The Lake Erie Energy Development Corp has signed a deal with GE to purchase five offshore wind turbines destined for the Ohio waters of the lake. The 4-MW turbines will be placed three to five miles offshore though their exact planned location isn't known. This is expected to be the first order of many from the development corp that has made a goal of having 1 GW of freshwater-based wind energy online by 2020."

  • A Norwegian company called Sway is developing a deepwater system that will allow turbines to be situated farther out to sea where winds can be steadier and stronger, and where the turbines are hidden from all save a few passing ships.

    A Norweigan company, SWAY A/S, is developing a deepwater wind turbine system. It seems that this system may offer a technical solution to two issues which are related to wind.  These  issues are that turbines are an eyesore for some and that of positioning turbines to receive a consistent wind flow. By enabling turbines to be placed far out to sea SWAY theoretically overcomes the eyesore issue. Also, wind flow may be more consistent in the open ocean and therefore a more approporiate environment to harvest consistent wind.

    A timely article to remind readers about the status of wind turbines in the US. No longer a marginal form of electrical generation, wind turbine installed capacity in the US is on the up. Apparently, wind already supplies about 1% American electricity, powering the equivalent of 4.5 million homes. However, in spite of advances in the wind field, electricity generated via wind turbines is at this time costlier than that generated from fossil fuels. Also, wind power has the disadvantage of being intermittent and unpredictable, but this matter may be overcome with battery storage in some cases.

  • The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) announced on November 7th that it now expects 4,000 megawatts (MW) of wind power capacity to be installed in 2007. That represents an increase of one-third over AWEA's previous projections for the year, which were last updated in August. AWEA's third quarter market report concludes that the wind industry added more than 2,300 MW of wind power in the first three quarters of 2007, while more than 5,000 MW of wind power are currently under construction. According to AWEA's tally, 13,885 MW of wind power capacity are now installed in the United States.
