Most of us are aware of the power of social networking for teachers to improve their knowledge, gain ideas and make connections with other like-minded educators from around the world. I believe this power can also be harnessed to improve the engagement, enjoyable and knowledge base of history students. If you would like your students to join an online network of high school history students from around the world come to http://myhistorynetwork.ning.com and apply to join. Just please let me know where you work, what you teach and some background knowledge about you. Once you have been verified as a history teacher you will be granted teacher privileges and your students can start connecting with other students around the world.
There are protocols in place to ensure the safety of students and already students from Australia and Germany have joined up. The feedback so far has been fantastic, so I would encourage you to become involved. Looking forward to seeing you there! David.

TED | Search - 14 views

This is the talk given at TED by Richard Baraniuk on Connexions, an open-source system for free educational content and his belief that this type of innovation will replace textbooks (YAY!). It's the first link on the list; I didn't save the link itself because it opens on a media player and that's really annoying. Click and enjoy! (PS If you've been living as a hostage on the moon for the last couple of years and haven't heard of TED give it a look/listen - it rocks).

21st Century Standards: Code for "Touchy-Feely Mush" - 19 views

  • The problem is that education standards and curriculums keep getting written by professional educators whose primary goal is job security.

Couldn't agree more. The honest questions aren't asked by education officials - indeed, it's impossible to ask them as they're not in the jargon that one must speak to be accepted into the closed ranks of the educrats. The result is a generation of Australian students who are leaving school functionally illiterate and incomprehensive of who they are and how the world works.

My History Network - a network of history students from around the world - 7 views

This is a network for high school history students to share ideas and help each other with their history studies. Just let us know you're a teacher when you join that you're a teacher and we'll give you 'Teacher' privileges. You then can admit and monitor your students while they're on the network.

Several new members have already joined up for 2010 and early results are very promising. If you're a high school history teacher we'd love to have you and your students along!

A little self-indulgent, however I'm interested in seeing what other people do with their classes. This is the montage of our recent medieval tournament. We also do an archaeological dig and other historical re-enactments. If anyone else has footage, images or descriptions of activities or re-enactments they do with their classes I'd be really interested to see them. And steal their ideas.

Recent neurological and psychological research (using scientific methodolgy as a basis, not theories e.g. Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, Bloom's Taxonomy, etc) is indicating that the constructivist models of learning, where 'process' is valued far more than 'content', are incorrect. Knowledge and thinking are interdependent and to think well, students must have knowledge.
