12 Rules for Writing Great Letters to Request Action - Wrightslaw - 1 views

The purpose of the letter could vary.  This format can easily be used for a variety of issues.
  • 5. Never threaten. Never telegraph your punches!
  • Fear of the Unknown As a negotiator, one of the most powerful forces you have on your side is the "Fear of the Unknown." When you threaten, you are telling the other side what you plan to do. If you tell them what you plan to do, you have told them how to protect themselves. At that moment, you lose your advantage - which is the wonderful, powerful Fear of the Unknown. Never telegraph your punches – you will destroy their power and effectiveness.

  • 6. Make several (unpleasant but necessary) assumptions.
  • 7. Make your problem unique.
  • 8. You ARE writing letters to a Stranger who has the power to resolve the problem
  • 9. Write letters to the school as business letters.

Again, writing does not have to be simply for a school.  This can easily be adapted to any audience.
  • 10. NEVER make judgments.

Letter Generator - 19 views

  •
The students read what is supposed to be typed on each page of the website. A step by step description of the parts of the letter is very nicely organized. It includes the heading, salutation, body, closing, signature and postscript. All are needed to finish the letter. The student can then choose the border and have the option of emailing, printing or saving their letters.

The Letters to Santa Project - 8 views

  •
Welcome to the Letters to Santa Project!  This was the very first project conducted in 1985 on our pioneering FrEdMail Network (using Apple IIe and 300 baud modems). It continues to be an annual Global Schoolhouse favorite. Around the world, Santa Claus plays an important role in a multitude of cultures. In the United States, he has become a true American folk icon. When you register for this project, we match you up with a partner classroom with which your students exchange their "Santa Letters:" Younger students write letters "to" Santa; Older students impersonate Santa and send their carefully crafted replies.

Murdoch-Owned Wireless Generation's Contract Should Be Scratched, Teachers' Union Leade... - 0 views

  •
Joy Resmovits Aug. 5, 2011 ""We have become increasingly concerned with the proposed contract," Michael Mulgrew and Richard Iannuzzi, who respectively head New York City's and the state's teachers' unions, wrote in the note. The letter is addressed to New York State Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch, state Commissioner of Education John King, Jr., and copied to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. "It is especially troubling that Wireless Generation will be tasked with creating a centralized student database for personal information even as its parent company, News Corporation, stands accused of engaging in illegal news gathering tactics, including the hacking of private voicemail accounts," the letter reads. Murdoch acquired 90 percent of Wireless Generation for about $360 million last November. At the time of the acquisition, Murdoch said he saw K-12 education as a "$500 billion sector." Murdoch's first general move in the education sector had come just a few weeks earlier, when he tapped Joel Klein, then the chancellor of New York City's schools, to lead his education ventures. The Wireless Generation contracts were approved while Klein still ran the district, leading to speculation about the chancellor's intentions."

Education Week: A Sandy Hook Parent's Letter to Teachers - 2 views

  •
Must read letter over at Edweek from a mom of one child who died at Sandy Hook and one who survived... if you want to be affirmed and remember why you teach, this is the post you should share with everyone. "Your courage will support students who are left out and overlooked, like the isolated young man who killed my daughter. At some point he was a young, impressionable student, often sitting all alone at school. You will have kids facing long odds for whom your smile, your encouraging word, and your willingness to go the extra mile will provide the comfort and security they need to try again tomorrow. When you Google "hero," there should be a picture of a principal, a school lunch worker, a custodian, a reading specialist, a teacher, or a bus monitor. Real heroes don't wear capes. They work in America's schools. "When I asked my son's teacher why she returned, she responded, 'Because they are my kids.' " Being courageous requires faith. It took faith to go back to work at Sandy Hook after the shooting. Nobody had the answers or knew what would come tomorrow, but they just kept going. Every opportunity you have to create welcoming environments in our schools where parents and students feel connected counts."

A GeekyMomma's Blog: An Open Letter To My Students' Parents - 14 views

  •
Dear Parents, Sometimes, I get to witness some pretty exciting "Aha!" moments with the students. It's a thrill for me to be present as they have these experiences. I've just assumed they bring these moments home to you but I'm often surprised when I ask the students if they share what we are doing in class and too many of them respond with "I forgot" or "I was busy."
