The participants will be able to create a personal word cloud that will be shared with the group as a warm-up (pre-training) activity. By providing the site, participants will engage in generative learning that will be used as a means of collaboration. Brief explanation of why this site is better than others: I had not used a word cloud creation site prior to beginning this project, but found Wordle easy to access and use. I like that there are sample clouds to view prior to creating, but also found the site easy to navigate if participants are anxious and just want to begin creating. I also selected this type of pre-training to assist with motivating participants with something that can be easily integrated into their own classroom.

I have used this before as a warm-up activity for my AP students so I think it is great.

    Wordle is a site for generating word clouds. It can be used to introduce a topic, brainstorm ideas, or check for understanding. I have used the site before, and it allows students to become more involved in their work. I have also used Wordle to build synergy in groups. Some students, in the past, have created their own word clouds by using their inventive, artistic talents without the use of the software.

    With Wordle, a person can paste in the text they want to create a word cloud from and click "Go" to create it. The user has control over the fonts, colors, and shapes the word cloud takes. Wordle could be used to create a word cloud to peak participant interest in the topic of the workshop. For instance, I might choose to create a word cloud using text that describes what Web 2.0 is.     This particular multimedia example is a video about the greenhouse effect, and its title is an engaging aspect that attracts learner by referencing a commonly known children's story. Mayer described the technology centered approach as being based in how and what technologies can be incorporated into the learning process (Mayer, 2009, pp. 10-11). It is definitely technology centered first and foremost. Throughout the video, it uses a great deal of overlaying video with static images or content so that the eye is engaged and drawn into the movement happening on screen. In this case, it meets with Mayer's assumption of dual coding in its design, in that it operates both on an auditory and visual channel (p. 64). In this case, in order for the learner to construct knowledge the auditory channel is the most important because the video images themselves really just augment the commentary, rather than presenting identical content visually. The images are stunning; there are amazing 3-D representations of earth, and video of the first atomic explosion. While these images are captivating, they don't serve as a second representation of the content itself. The learning that takes would not be considered active learning by Mayer's criteria, because there it is not structured in such a way that the learner does not have any repetitive elements to select and focus on in order to sequence the content in order to build knowledge (p. 71). Also, there is not an opportunity for the learner to integrate the visual and audio components to build knowledge, because the content is primarily in the audio while the video images are more oriented toward holding the learner's attention instead of presenting content or concept related information (p. 71).

First, it is structured so that there is a repetitive vocabulary so that the learner can tune in and follow along the sequence of the video, which Mayer argues is important to the process of active learning (p. 71). It is also structured to help the learner organize the information. In this case, it is not as Mayer described his example as learners visualizing cause and effect relationships (p. 71). Rather it is structured so that you have a bland graphic, a man talking, explaining the information which he then repeats essentially as the screen shifts to show a visual of what he is describing. This allows for the third process of Mayer's active learning, integration, to occur because the auditory and visual channels coincide so that the brain has time to merge the two separate sources of input into a single knowledge node (pp. 64, 71).

Graphic organizers offer a unique way to introduce topics without overwhelming learners. Interesting graphics and text create visual interest for prelearning. I've only used Freemind for mindmap projects with school, and their graphics are small in relation.

    Mind Meister is an excellent cloud based tool that creates collaborative mind maps. This tool is excellent for team use because multiple people can create and edit the tool simultaneously. The team can also create project timelines with deadlines sent to their favorite calendaring tools.

A group of learners can collaborate on a single mind map to come up with a final product, and they can do so in real time. They can add text, graphics, links, notes, etc. to fully develop and present their ideas. In addition, learners can save final product in various formats to embed them in their projects. The interaction learners have with the content to organize it into a visual representation (as supported by Mindmeister) is the perfect example of generative processing or using cognitive processes to make sense of the material (Mayer, 2009). For English Language Learners, this tool allows learners to show what they understand even when they may not have enough English to write a paper on a particular concept/topic. o The site is easy to use and creates a clean and organized product. Some mapping programs can yield such complex products that are very hard to follow. In addition, I enjoy the ability to work offline because teachers and students alike might not always have internet handy. Finally, this is one of the few programs available not only for pc, but also for mobile and tablet.

    This site allows you to generate interactive mindmaps that help organize thoughts and ideas into great visual representations. It is easy to create, to meanipulate, and to edit. You are able to collaborate on the map with others and you canmake the map public or share with select audiences.

    I recently discovered Spinscape, which is a mindmapping webtool that can be used to create a graphic organizer. It has so many features wrapped into one application. Some of the features that I would find helpful in using Spinscape are the ability to insert links, widgets to post Youtube video, notes, attachments and even tasks for managing a project. Spinscape also offers numerous different views such as the classic bubbles, compact, wiki and farmland styles. The ability to put in tags also makes this a useful tool to help locate information. This definitely is a more visually appealing and more multi-functional than some of the other mindmaps that I have seen, but it is significantly more difficult to navigate and use. It exports the files in multiple formats (HTML, PDF, Word), but not in JPEG. I would really love to use this tool for my presentation, but I will probably not because of the cost. I have been using my 7 day trial membership to explore and it will be expired by the time that I do my workshop.

    The multimedia application on this website adequately addresses the learner centered approach in its design. It does so in a number of ways, in particular in how it allows the learner to manipulate the multimedia application and then represents the outcome of that manipulation in the form of a cartoon video. Mayer held that the brain possesses dual channels, an auditory and visual processor, and each processes the information separately, later merging these two experiences together to create knowledge (Mayer, 2009, p. 64). This multimedia site works on both aspects of knowledge building in that it includes both and auditory and visual graphics. However, once the introduction is completed the auditory component does not contain any content related information so the user can chose to mute the sound (Mayer, 2009, p. 64). The strength of this multimedia is that it allows the user to manipulate the video itself. For example, students chose a gas, and then select its level in the atmosphere (high-medium-low). From there, the multimedia video plays and shows them in about a thirty second video what would happen on earth in an accelerated time progression in order for students to see the impact the gases have on the atmosphere. However, it is technology centered as well because it includes lots of different graphic elements within the same application, some that can be directly manipulated by the user and others that cannot.

    Xtranormal is a website that allows individuals to make a movie just by texting. Xtranormal will be a used to present the objectives of the presentation. The animation will allow the learners to view a visual with audio/text (present two types of learning).

    Assignment, Module 3 - Xtranormal.com is a web-based presentation tool that allows the user to create a movie from text.  The site claims that, "if you can type, you can make movies."  Users are provided with 3D characters that are brought to life through adding content to their voices.  It uses a drag-and-drop animation system of editing.  Another advantage is you can follow this site from FaceBook or on Twitter.  One disadvantage is the recommended configuration is limited to Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista.

    Xtranormal was one of the featured websites in the programs for Module 3. It is a very easy to use website to create videos. I used it to create the directions for the pre-training activity. In order to create a video you simply type in your script, select your character, background, camera angles, and character movements. This text to speech website is an example of generative learning because it simplifies the expectations for the participants.

    The topic of my multimedia Artifacts project is How to Utilize Multimedia to Create Effective Instructions. Robertson, et.al (2010) article on cognitive tools-emerging perspectives on learning and teaching, was definitively learner-centered approach to learning. Various multimedia artifacts such as PowerPoint Presentations, Notebook Online discussions, Teleconferences, Video streaming and Podcasting (LearnOutLoud.com) allow students to retrieve and identify information through learning situations that required the seeking of information. Information was presented in a meaningful and appropriate representation that supported the participants by allowing them to use technology tools to establish relationships among information by structuring or restructuring information and manipulating the information (p.1). Mayer's (2008) dual coding /dual channels is where participate take in information as visual (through the eyes) and the verbal channel which deals with processing sound,( spoken text ).
