Sensory Map of Hong Kong - 111 views

    This a great idea for a project that successfully infuses technology into a language class. Students (aged 13-14) were required to go to an area in Hong Kong and use their 5 senses to describe what they experienced. Their English teachers helped them by taking them on walks around the neighbourhood of our school and getting them to think about what they could see, smell, taste, hear and touch. The students then worked in groups, picked an area they wanted to explore and set off to use their newly heighten senses. They used their phones to digitally record what they came across. Later this work was taken into ICT class where this interactive media rich website was created with the help of their ICT teacher. We hope you enjoy it! Check out the teachers' picks at the bottom.

    I particularly liked the "sound" elements that had actual sound! (usually film footage) - that's an example of truly making the experience multimedia and doing something that we couldn't do with earlier technology.

One of the most widely used free podcasting software programs is Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), an open source sound recording and editing program with versions available for PC, Mac, and Linux operating systems. For Mac users another free podcasting program is GarageBand, found within the iLife package that comes with all new Mac OS X computers. Although older versions of GarageBand do not have the podcasting function, upgrades to the new, podcasting-ready GarageBand 4.1 are available in the iLife08 package for $90 (educational discounts available; http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/).   • For educators, podcasting offers an opportunity to bridge the traditional classroom setting with progressive state-of-the-art technologies. There are several advantages of bringing podcasting into the classroom for lectures and student assignments. First, podcasting is an exciting and novel means for students to take a more active role in their own learning experience. As students realize their podcast assignments may be published online with potentially hundreds of listeners through free podcast directories, their attention to the quality and detail of their assignments may improve. Second, podcasting is adaptable to the students' learning needs. Students can access the material whenever and as often as they would like, thereby reinforcing critical concepts or details they may have missed in the original classroom lecture. Finally, assignments that require students to generate, edit, and publish their own podcasts reinforce critical communication skills such as writing text that will be orally presented online or in a classroom.

    Both schools have been supporters of the "Drop Everything and Read" concept. Observations over time have been that it has become a relatively passive activity - a good one - but still in need of something. So, they're going to experiment with a concept that they're calling "Drop Everything and Blog". The logic is one of scaffolding the concept. You can't really blog unless you have something to blog about. So, the initial attempt will be to have students and teachers blog about favourite books that they've read. Once blogged, classmates will be encouraged to read the original post and comment on it.

    Bring your "drop everything and read" literacy sessions up a notch -- how about "stop everything and blog". My personal suggestion with this -- use Google Documents and allow the option of simultaneous collaboration.
