56,000 (& Counting) Education Apps Worth Knowing About - 142 views

  •
You probably saw the title of this post and thought 'okay there's no friggin' way he's going to assemble a list of the best 50,000 education apps. But thanks to a partnership between Edudemic and FindTheBest, we've done just that. We've been working hard behind the scenes to build a robust directory of, as of this writing, about 56,000 education apps. But it's not just a list… it's a finely tuned directory capable of sorting out all the apps in ways not even available in the iTunes or Mac App stores. For example, you can now find out the average price of all education apps to see where your app falls. (Hint: the average price of an education app is $2.66)

Free Technology for Teachers: What's Obvious to You, Is Amazing to Someone Else - 129 views

  • The great thing about sharing online is that you never know who is going to discover what you share. Something that you think has been said one hundred times over might be brand new to someone else. We all have something to share.
  • having students write a weekly reflective blog post. They don't have to write complex blog posts, just a short summary of their learning and observations that week will do. In this way students can learn from each other. Even if they don't pick up anything brand new from this process, they will at least be reminding each other of what they have learned that week.
  •
One of the reasons I sometimes hear people give for not blogging, Tweeting, or otherwise participating in sharing their ideas online is, "I don't have anything to say." To that I often reply, "yes, you do."

No, algebra isn't necessary - and yes, STEM is overrated - The Answer Sheet - The Washi... - 69 views

  •
    He said what?!
  •
Not learning algebra means you have shut the door on many careers. Sure you can lead a good life without it, but you have limited yourself. Math phobics are always looking for a reason to justify/validate their choice to avoid math. Trying to make math seem irrelevant to life is a common approach. Imagine saying learning English is overrated - many get by just fine without writing or reading much of anything in their daily lives. In fact, why do we need any education?
  •
It's an interesting article. The writer followed it up in his blog extending similar treatment to ALL subjects. It's more a treatise in how curriculum design and the current state of the system has failed society, rather than an attack on disciplines specifically. He actually has a STEM background, mind you.

Julia Kristeva - 5 views

  • Theories of the body are particularly important for feminists because historically (in the humanities) the body has been associated with the feminine, the female, or woman, and denigrated as weak, immoral, unclean, or decaying.
    • Christopher Williams

      Feminism and post-structuralism operate in binaries: good/evil, truth/lie, love/hate, man/not man(woman)
  • Kristeva emphasizes the maternal function and its importance in the development of subjectivity and access to culture and language. While Freud and Lacan maintain that the child enters the social by virtue of the paternal function, specifically paternal threats of castration, Kristeva asks why, if our only motivation for entering the social is fear, more of us aren't psychotic?
  • Kristeva argues that there are three phases of feminism. She rejects the first phase because it seeks universal equality and overlooks sexual differences. She implicitly criticizes Simone de Beauvoir and the rejection of motherhood; rather than reject motherhood Kristeva insists that we need a new discourse of maternity.

    a post about storify
  •
I love Storify!! I"ve been working with it since the summer...Here is some of my work: https://sites.google.com/site/stephsnotebook/home/storify I'd be interested in your feedback.
  •
@stephanie mccabe I'm just getting started with Storify so I don't know much about it. I love the work you did with it and I find the concept really interesting-- the ease of mixing different media to answer a question. The only concern I have is about how to get students to turn it into a cohesive written narrative (which I find is what students seem to have a harder time with). Writing seems so difficult for students these days.... What do you think?

Is Sweden's Classroom-Free School the Future of Learning? - Education - GOOD - 2 views

  • Vittra doesn't award traditional grades, either—students are taught in groups according to level—so maximizing diverse teaching and learning situations is a priority. The open nature of the campus and the unusual furniture arrangements reflect the school's philosophy that "children play and learn on the basis of their needs, curiosity, and inclination." That's true for kids all over the world, so let's hope educators in other countries begin to pay attention.

Study: Class size doesn't matter - The Washington Post - 9 views

  • traditionally collected input measures — class size, per pupil expenditure, the fraction of teachers with no certification, and the fraction of teachers with an advanced degree — are not correlated with school effectiveness.
  • frequent teacher feedback, the use of data to guide instruction, high-dosage tutoring, increased instructional time, and high expectations — explains approximately 50 percent of the variation in school effectiveness
