Winter of discontent: Snow-lovers mourn Northland's dry weather | Duluth News Tribune |... - 9 views

  • A brownish Christmas? You can hear the frustration in Cedar Gordon’s voice. The Two Harbors 9-year-old, according to her mother, Katya, “is furious about global warming.”
  • r, 7, ran through her list of things to revel in about snow: skiing, sledding, snow angels, snowmen. “I feel really mad at it.”The only bright light of normal winter activity in Two Harbors is the new ice skating rink in front of the band shell in the city park. Those are the harsh realities and small graces for the last week of 2011 as a drought continues in the Northland. The National Weather Service predicts more of the same, at least through the weekend, meaning no more snow.

Turn snow days into e-learning days with these 6 simple steps | eSchool News | eSchool ... - 40 views

  • It’s time for e-learning to become common place in public schools, starting with snow days.
    • Sharin Tebo

Just because students are not at school doesn't mean the learning stops. What instead of mandating kids have internet access at home, there are pre-made activities that don't foresee the dependency on the Internet and instead, can be approved by a parent/guardian signature that such learning activities took place during the day off school for whatever reason.
  • Online learning also helps teachers reduce their stress load. It provides a predictable avenue for educators to budget their curriculum goals with available teaching days. Finally, e-learning days provide students with academic consistency and predictability, eliminating any snow day confusion.

Conspiracy debunked: Atlanta snow doesn't melt. - 16 views

  •
"Here at BA Central I see a lot of truly ridiculous conspiracy theories. Over the years there's been the Moon Hoax, various asteroids NASA was covering up that would hit the Earth (or wipe us out somehow via electricity), and of course the end of the Earth over and over and over again. Yet happily, we're still here. Yet sadly, so are these silly theories."

The Importance of Fluency and Automaticity for Efficient Reading - 43 views

  •
The reading process involves two separate but highly interrelated areas - word identification and comprehension. It is well established that difficulties in automatic word recognition significantly affect a reader's ability to effectively comprehend what they are reading (Lyon, 1995; Torgeson, Rashotte, and Alexander, 2001). Even mild difficulties in word identification can pull attention away from the underlying meaning, reduce the speed of reading, and create the need to reread selections to grasp the meaning. Many students who struggle to learn to read are able, with appropriate instruction, to compensate for initial reading problems by becoming accurate decoders but fail to reach a level of sufficient fluency to become fast and efficient readers. Thus, the development of techniques for improving automaticity and fluency is critical. Although the research is clear that a systematic alphabetic approach to teaching beginning readers is more effective than a whole word approach (Adams, 1990; Chall, 1996; Snow, Burns and Griffin, 1009), the most effect ways to develop fluency are less well understood.

Virtual kids: Actually they're real, but they go to school online - Kansas City Star - 16 views

  •
"Eleventh-grader Philip Marten's second-hour class is orchestra. But first hour, third hour, fourth hour and the rest of his school day are spent not at school but at home in Shawnee. Philip may look like any other high school kid, but in fact he's a "virtual" student. For him and others enrolled in virtual schools online, getting an education involves no bells, no lockers, no school plays, no marching band, no snow days and no cafeteria food."

Turn snow days into e-learning days with these 6 simple steps | eSchool News | eSchool ... - 6 views

  • 1. Check with your state legislators and teachers’ unions about school day minimums and allowable teaching hours. Make sure that, legally, e-learning days are a possibility for your district.

It would sure be nice if State Departments of Education got rid of 'hours' and 'seat time' requirements and just acknowledged that it saves time and money if we have students who are already demonstrating and can show competency and proficiency without having to sit and get.

Thinking about solar? It's easier to start small | Green Tech - CNET News - 12 views

  • Thinking about solar?
  • Green Ray Solar this week is expected to announce UL certification for a solar panel that puts out alternating current, rather than direct current as most solar photovoltaic panels do today. AC panels can be simpler to install and wire together than traditional panels, which makes a piecemeal approach easier,
  • Traditionally, solar panels are tied into a device called an inverter, which converts the direct current from panels into household alternating current. Strung together, several panels produce enough voltage to run an inverter which, sized for a rooftop array, is roughly as big as a computer monitor.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • A microinverter brings that DC-to-AC function onto each individual panel. Proponents say the technology simplifies installation and improves panel performance.
  • For example, shading on one panel will not affect the output of other panels connected to it, as happens with panels connected to a centralized inverter.
