project censored article on former Indiana gov Mitch Daniels now president of Purdue's effort to root out Zinn's work from being used by teachers.  article notes contrast of Ziinn's treatment of US imperialism compared with a standard history text used in Indiana that devotes all of two paragraphs to the US war with Mexico that ended with Mexico "ceding" i(n the euphemistic curricular language) almost 1/2 it's territory to the US--while not mentioning any dissent about this war.  In contrast, Zinn's people's history devotes a whole chapter to the conflict. 

Novels have power and influence. Interesting look at the darker side of the author's power over the reader in an age when we insist that all reading is goodness and light. Not a call for censorship by any means--just a reflection on how truly powerful literature is.

What amazes me is how inconsistent administrators are. As she hasn't read the book herself, why even give her an audience? Right off the bat she sited incorrect information as Kat wasn't the only one to survive and at the heart of the book is all about ethics and standing up for what is right. Isn't that the lesson we want our children to learn?

Student Bloggers: Electronic Frontier Foundation is a bloggers legal guide to student blogging. It provides information for students about legal issues when student blogging, such as freedom of speech and censorship.

Who is Anonymous? He's a sixteen-year old boy living with his parents, upstairs in his room, playing on his computer. He is legion. All this energy and intelligence marshaled to protest censorship and to protect the sharing of movies, music, and images. Who is anonymous? They are our students. 

Should we take the word "nigger" out of Uncle Tom's Cabin? We've barely turned the first page before it makes the first of literally hundreds of appearances in the novel. Censorship in the Web 2.0 World.
