Net Neutrality FAQ: What's in it for You - PC World - 1 views

  •
Net neutrality is an important issue being addressed by the US government right now to prevent companies from sort of creating their own version of the Internet. These rules are supposed to keep things "open." I'm also sending these to my digiteen students (you can follow digiteen at http://www.twitter.com/digiteen) and Flat Classroom students (http://www.twitter.com/flatclassroom) for work on their project.
  •
Net neutrality deserves a mention in the Digiteen project and is an important topic being debated here in the US.

Learn 4 Life » Educators in Virtual Worlds on Open Sim - the pioneers… - 0 views

Watch the interview with students below in Real Life and Avatar form and then the next one with Vicki see how eloquently she comments on these new learning landscapes. I would hold that interview up as a seminal exemplar of someone who knows exactly what they are doing in this field and if I had my way it would be required viewing for anyone who has doubts about the efficacy of using Web 2.0 tools in education and the systems and infrastructure that can be built around them. I would also point people to the award winning wiki on the global Flat Classroom Project for further reference - the Digiteen project is just one small subset of that whole activity.

Excellent blog post about the pioneers in virtual world education. Excerpt here is from teh section about Vicki Davis and her class who built Digiteen Island in Reaction Grid Open Sim. Google launches YouTube curriculum to educate students on digital citizenship (video) -... - 2 views

  •
It is all very well to provide resources to learn about digital citizenship, but the BEST way for students to learn is to actually be online connecting and collaborating with others globally. This is where the Digiteen Project is SO powerful. It not only uses resources such as this one, but gets students putting expectations into practice. http://digiteen.org

  • I think it is that there is a lot of value in allowing students to make mistakes in an environment like the Ning where they can make mistakes and learn from them. I was nervous about the Ning component of this project because of the potential for my students to make mistakes on a public site, but if they are never given a chance to really fully participate in real world experiences then how are they ever going to learn how to navigate these experiences successfully.
  • This short story has really reinforced for me the power of these global collaborative projects, and it’s not over yet. I wonder what other teachable moments and wonderful connections will happen next?

Neustar Launches Social Media Digital Citizenship Program for  Kentucky Schoo... - 0 views

  •
A program from Neustar to Kentucky schools about Digital Citizenship. Lots of people are jumping on this "bandwagon." I think my biggest concern is that: #1 It needs to be "real" and not based on preachy scare-based tactics #2 Students should talk with those who share the program - if it is just videos and worksheets, that doesn't cut it.  #3 To talk about and learn social media, you should be doing it. (That is what we do on Digiteen.) a major new initiative to bring social media digital literacy education to students across the state of Kentucky through a program called "My Digital Life." Neustar will partner with EverFi, Inc., a leading education technology company, to provide this innovative, online student experience to all Kentucky schools interested in teaching and certifying their students in digital literacy skills and responsibility. Most importantly, Neustar's partnership is making the cutting-edge program available free of cost to the schools and state.

digiteen2008 - Digital Health and Wellness - 2 views

  • Digital Health and Wellness is how to stay physically fit.
  • . A few months ago a train wrecked because the driver was texting and not paying attention to how fast he was going
  • I think that alot of middle aged students would be interested in playing the nintendo wii fit.
  • ...14 more annotations...
  • Just a bit of advice for the middle and high school students, put the phone on silent and leave it alone while you are driving because you can really get hurt!
  • Also you can still teach kids to sit correctly when your on a computer
  • So they are just naturally harder to teach than anyone else
  • one of the teachers said that walking into a room without computers was like walking into a desert.
  • This video is all about minor cases of what can and will happen if you text and drive.
  • Here are some pictures of some of the worse things that can happen.
  • Middle school and high school students are more likely to text and drive because they don't know all about the dangers of texting and driving
    • d l

This is true. Texting and driveng is very dangerous.
  • A good saying for this is," I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand." Confucious.
    • d l

      I agree.
  • One is that they are more affected by predators
  • The second is WE have to keep them from getting too much computer consumption
  • Doctors say kids should only get 1 or 2 hours of "screen time" a day.
  • People of all ages are becoming more and more dependent on computers and mobile phones.
  • Digital health and wellness is about staying fit and healthy I think. People that spend to much on computers or use there mobile phones to much should cut down heaps.
  • A. Elementary Aged Students Don't let them stay on the computer for extended amounts of time, don't let them get on Myspace or Facebook, and when they are on the computer the parents should always be watching them no matter what. B. Middle / High School Aged Students The middle school students should be allowed a little more freedom but by the same token i don't think that they should be allowed to get on Myspace or Facebook. Those things will bring a lot more trouble than anything else. Do you think that the people on Myspace are looking for a good christian page or a page that has a lot of bad pictures on it? I don't have a Myspace or Facebook and truly I don't want one. C. Adults Adults should be allowed to do what they want. I mean really what can we do to stop them? Nothing!! We can try all that we want to but adults get more addicted and are harder to get out of that habit. Then again I think that the adults will be the best influence for the young kids and if they will try and spread the word for the kids they can do anything for them that they want to

The Campus Guide to Copyright Compliance - 0 views

  • Copyright Basics: Fair Use Determining Fair Use Exceptions for Libraries and Archives Exceptions for the use of Materials in an Educational Setting   Fair use is a concept embedded in U.S. law that recognizes that certain uses of copyright-protected works do not require permission from the copyright holder or its agent. These include instances of minimal use that do not interfere with the copyright holder's exclusive rights to reproduce and reuse the work. Fair use is not an exception to copyright compliance; it is more of a "legal defense." That is, if you copy and share a copyright-protected work and the copyright holder claims copyright infringement, you may be able to assert a defense of fair use which you would then have to prove. Fair use is primarily intended to allow the use of copyright-protected works for commentary, parody, news reporting, research and education. However, not all uses in an academic context are automatically considered fair use. The Copyright Act does not spell out the specific types of content reproduction that qualify as fair use. It offers an outline as to how to analyze whether fair use may apply in a particular situation. As a result, the Copyright Act leaves it up to the individual to determine, based upon the factors in Section 107 of the Act, whether fair use applies in each particular circumstance. To avoid a potential legal challenge from the copyright holder, many institutions follow a policy of "when in doubt, obtain permission."

Facebook Increasingly Becomes a Helpful Tool for Employers in Job Interviews | Moneylan... - 6 views

  •
It is legal for a prospective employer during a job interview to ask you to log into your facebook page and click through your friends only posts, photos, and messages. This is a very important topic for digital citizens to understand.
  • ...7 more comments...

This is an important article. I'm going to discuss it with my Digiteen class this morning and have them comment here.
  •
I don't think that is fair. The employer has no right to be a part of their personal life. Although, they need to know about what they say on the internet. I would not want someone i don't know looking at my profile page.
  •
This is a good and a bad thing. It is a good thing because if someone is bad than you know not to hire them. it is a bad thing because people should not be judged on what their friends post. Just because their friends might post bad things does not mean that they are bad.
  •
Well, for me the act of "shoulder surfing" is good as well bad. It is good because as an employer if I don't know the maybe future employee this would be good to base my opinion on whether or not to hire them. This also can be bad, as the future employee may have private conversation with his or her wife that they do not want anyone to see (this is just to give an example).
  •
I guess i could understand why they have this. I personally like this idea in most ways, but not all. For example, its good for finding if the person your employing is a criminal, or someone bad. But its kind of bad because what if someone is not accepted because they were talking with a 'special someone' and the employers saw. That doesn't really seem fair to me, because that is your personal PERSONAL info, and no one else needs to see it besides you and who you are talking to. Unless of course its about something bad like planning something illegal. The main downside i see in this is maybe that person created a fake Facebook that looks all great and seems like they are a good person. Then a not-so-good person might have gotten a job that they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. I can't really decide if this is good or bad, but for now, I'm going to say it's bad.
  •
Well i think it is 50/50, because you have to be careful of what you put out there. And i don't think they should go on your friends facebook account to look at there posts and not yours! I also don't think they should judge you by your friends!
  •
I dont know exactly if this is fair or not. I can see where employers are coming from by wanting to see their possible employees facebook account, but i also think that a lot of the stuff that we may post may be completely personal while being completely innocent. everyone needs privacy and if they decide to do that through facebook then they have the right.
  •
I think its a good video to watch because it definitely made me think. The video also scared me even thought i don't have a Facebook. I now know how to stay safe if i get one.
  •
I think that the post is mean. I don't really like the post because it makes the person look bad.
