A Clash of Cultures on the Internet - 0 views

  • In these cultural clashes, advertisers compare the Internet to magazines and newspapers (where most people expect ads) while Internet diehards compare the Internet to telephones and interpersonal conversations (where ads would be considered intrusive). In fact, Internet areas such as Usenet are areas of two-way communication where, unlike newspapers and magazines, anyone can post messages and contribute equally to the content. Yet, unlike telephone conversations, these areas are disseminated widely, which is what attracts those interested in advertising

Culture Clash on the Changing Internet - 0 views

  • An old attitude that makes it difficult to create harmony between the old generations and the new is the behavior of more experienced users towards `newbies' on the net. In the past, one could expect other users to be somewhat familiar with computing environment. People who asked too many `stupid' questions were ostracized and `flamed.' Now the net must handle a gigantic influx of users with less computer experience, who will ask thousands of questions in their exploration of the obscure operations of the Internet.

This tells about how different attitudes can effect whether there is conflict or not.

In Defense of the Culture Clash - 0 views

  • Because of the internet, clashes between the sensibilities of different societies will only increase. Offended parties will press publishers to keep offensive communications off the network. However, if people only publish what's acceptable to most everyone in the world, then the internet will be a far less effective tool for social and political change than it might otherwise be.

Parents should control use of technology - 1 views

  • 1. Power down at mealtimes. This means no television, computers or texting. This is the time to really connect with each other without the technological distractions that can be so overwhelming throughout the day. 2. No computers in kids' bedrooms until at least high school. Please trust me on this one. The risks just aren't worth it. Keep computers in public areas of your house, and regularly monitor their usage. 3. Limit or eliminate television viewing on school nights. You'll be amazed at the impact this will have on your family. Kids play games, become creative and interact with us and their siblings. 4. No social media networks until at least high school, and supervise their use. Many kids just don't have the impulse control to adequately control this technology, and the effects on them and others can be substantial. 5. Supervise cell phone use, including texting. You need to be guided by the maturity of your child, but irresponsible behavior should result in increased supervision. 6. Learn about technology. Don't be afraid of texting, video-conferencing, iPads, or Facebook. They are fun and great ways to stay connected with your kids.
