By embedding a selected set of content standards from a variety of disciplines into a realistic setting/project the students get the opportunity to use the knowledge and go beyond the standards as their interest leads them.

    Though this article is written for the business sector, there are many great parallels with how we experience social media's acceptance in the educational realm. The suggestions that are given are readily applied to our setting, as well. In the enterprise, many employees think blogs are merely websites on which people talk about their cat or their latest meal. Many don't know the differences between and advantages of such tools as message boards, blogs, and wikis. They have heard of these terms in passing, but the demands of their day-to-day jobs have prevented them from recognizing the distinct benefits of each tool. Solution: It is useless to advocate for social media tools in a vacuum. Unless you're describing a solution to a practical problem, busy workers will not respond to buzzwords like "wiki," "blog," and "community." Your client usually has about a 30-second attention span in which you can sell a social media tool. An aide in my arsenal has been the excellent videos by Lee Lefever at Common Craft. Lee visually explains social media concepts "In Plain English." Common Craft videos quickly explain complex and sometimes unfamiliar technologies in a few minutes, sans the buzzwords, hype, and sensationalism. Problem: Cynical Clients Who Don't Want to Share Information Unfortunately, some potential SharePoint users balk at the technology because they have no desire to share their knowledge for the benefit of the organization.   • If you want to truly learn something, there is nothing like teaching it, so allowing, in fact encouraging, students to help one another solve problems, to teach each other, increases learning for both the helper and the helped.

A chance for students, whether working as individuals or in collaborative groups, to give feedback to each other is a valuable tool for creating a greater sense of community and engagement toward common goals.

While blogs certainly CAN be configured to have new posts "moderated" by someone serving in the role of a gatekeeper, by default most blogs allow users to publish INSTANTLY. If you're interested in setting up a blog for moderated posting by students, I'd recommend using Class Blogmeister for this purpose. Wordpress blogs can be configured for contributor posts to be moderated as well, but this requires a bit of configuration. (This is the setup we're using here on ISTEconnects, btw.) On the Wordpress dashboard, under SETTINGS - GENERAL SETTINGS, we've checked the MEMBERSHIP box ANYONE CAN REGISTER and set the "New User Default Role" to be CONTRIBUTOR. With these configuration settings, new posts must be reviewed by a user designated as an "editor" or "administrator" before they become "live" on the site. For more on this, see the Wordpress.org CODEX article "Roles and Capabilities." To setup a free classroom or personal Wordpress blog you don't have to host yourself, I recommend using EduBlogs or Wordpress.com. Blogs setup with Blogger can similarly be setup as "team" blogs with moderated contributions from members which can include students and/or teachers. That finding could be significant as many colleges report that blended instruction is among the fastest-growing types of enrollment.
