Mayo research study to determine if there are enough patients with hard to treat epilepsy that might qualify for a future study of a medical device that is being developed to treat epilepsy. Participants will not be testing the device during this study. The study doctor will be assessing seizure type(s) and determine how frequently they occur, and to verify if antiseizure medications can be held constant for a period of 12 weeks.

Multicenter, randomized, controlled trial to compare the anti-seizure effect of parenteral MgSO4 versus oral labetalol in hypertensive pregnant women who are eligible for MgSO4 therapy. The primary outcome measure is eclampsia, and the secondary outcome measures include blood pressure control, and relevant antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal maternal and fetal/neonatal parameters including adverse effects and complications.

NINDS sponsored study will examine how the areas in the brain are connected when they are controlling two finger movements at the same time. Study will examine how people use what they see to help guide two different movements. NICHD program focuses on developing research that links PCCR medicine and science to the epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of childhood disabilities. The Metropolitan Atlanta Developmental Disabilities Study (MADDS) was the first U.S., population-based epidemiologic study of the prevalence of intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, hearing loss, vision impairment, and epilepsy in school-aged children. National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) staff have written scientific papers using information from MADDS. These papers look at such topics as how common autism spectrum disorders are and what causes hearing loss in children. A recent study using high-dose rhEpo (3000 U rhEpo/kg body weight at birth) for neuroprotection in very preterm infants revealed that no signs of adverse effects of early high-dose rhEpo treatment in very preterm infants were identified. Contrary to this, a recent study in PVL of a rat model revealed that using a low dose rhEpo (50-100 U/kg) was effective in the treatment of brain damage induced by hypoxia-ischemia and did not affect normal oligodendrocyte maturity. On this basis, the researchers intent to investigate (1) whether low-dose rhEpo (100 U/kg) or high-dose rhEpo (3,000 U/kg) given to very preterm infants (gestation age < 32 weeks) immediately after birth and subsequently during the first 2 days is safe and possesses neuroprotective properties;(2) whether there are gender differences in response to the hypoxia-ischemic insult and EPO treatment; (3)the pharmacokinetics of low dose and high dose rhEPO.

Hundreds of babies in the world are being treated with brain cooling to prevent brain injury after they lose oxygen at birth. This study will use the newly developed information from the magnet resonance image to determine the actual temperature of the brain. This will enable researchers to determine if the brain is being uniformly cooled and if techniques that provide cooling need to be changed to improve the injury prevention from cooling
