      5.4.1 "Investigate technologies that mimic human or animal musculoskeletal systems in order to meet a need." This activity can be adapted for ELL students by allowing those students to draw pictures of their design, rather than write a paragraph or make a chart. If the students are able, they can label the parts of their picture, using the English words they know. This activity can also be adjusted for younger grades by allowing them more than one science class time to work on the project. This may be an activity that can span a few days. The activity can then be broken down into sections. The students could use one class time to ask their questions within their group, and plan what they want their product to look like. The actual design and implementation of their product can be put into place on a separate class day.

    Student create a product for a bicep strain that provides assistance to the muscle so that it does less work to bend the arm. The students are divided into groups to created their product, using the steps of the engineering design process: ask, imagine, plan, create, improve.

This activity can be used for older grades too. The students could find the densities of the solids and liquids. They could even go so far as to cook a breakfast and discuss liquids to solids as they are cooked.

    In this activity, students will make a mini biome in the bottom of a one liter bottle.  Students will be able to plant a seed and give it certain nutrients to watch it grow, adapt, and change to its environment.

    state standard: 1.3.2 Great way to keep kids interested over a long period of time. The kids are excited to see what their biome is doing/ how things are frowing. You can explain that everything the plant needs to grow is in the biome. A enrichment idea off this activity would be to try and simulate the different conditions in each biome to an enviornment that is in our world (desert vs rainforest) and see how that affects each biome.

This activity can be used with gifted students by allowing them to observe another candle burning in a bowl with no water present. The students can then compare and contrast the differences in the candles and the way in which they burn, and make inferences about why they believe the candles are different. This activity can be used with older age groups in the same way. The older students may be able to light their own candles as they work in groups, while still monitoring their progress.

It may be an actiity that couldbe done as a whole class activity. Vibrations and how sounds are transmitted and heard is something that students are fascinated by.

    Fractions with color tiles.  Allows students to record their findings on graph paper.  Make a game of it by trading papers, and allowing the other student to attempt to build the other student's fraction bar without peeking at the answer.

      I would use an activity like this to incorporate learning into a reward, for example, taking students outside for good behavior, test grades, etc. Keeping hula hoops on hand is an inexpensive way to incorporate physical activity into academic instruction.

This physical coordination reinforcement activity uses a hula hoop to get the mental juices flowing. The allotted time can be shorter, which encourages them to give their answers quickly! This activity can be used with younger ages by having the students practice their math facts, rather than their multiplication facts.

    In this activity, students play a game of war using multiplication facts. Each player flips over two cards, and says the math sentence for those two cards. For example, if one student flipped over a 4 and a 5, he or she would say, "4 x 5 = 20". Using a timer, the teacher can set a designated amount of time. When the time is up, each player counts their cards. The person with the most cards wins!

    This is a great way for students to visualize what components are actually in our blood. It is hard for most kids to understand what they cannot see. If they cannot see the ed blood cells, white blood cells, and plasma, it can be confusing for them. This activity can imulate blood and the studetns can see all of the different componenets.

      It's fun to add the liquids out of order from densest to least dense and observe as they still seek their layer. I've done this with Karo syrup that I've added blue food coloring to, red water, and oil, but we add the water first, then the Karo syrup, and then the oil and the liquid seeks its layer. We extend this further by stirring the liquids too. Some of the layers separate out, but others remain mixed. It's a cool activity!

    Density - or mass per volume - of a liquid is an important scientific concept that can be viewed with the naked eye. We see it all the time with oil and water. Oil has a different density than water so the two liquids do not mix. In this experiment your child will look at a number of liquids with different densities and compare them all to water. She'll build her science skills and learn one of the most fundamental scientific concepts she'll use for years to come.
