This activity can be used in older age groups by providing multiplication or division flash cards, rather than addition or subtraction flash cards.

Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry." This activity can be modified for gifted students by challenging them with more cards. Encourage them to use as many cards as they would like while participating in this activity! This activity can be used with younger ages by using objects other than cards. A big picture cut into pieces would help the students visualize symmetry, as it would be more like putting a puzzle together. The leader just gets to choose in what order the puzzle is assembled! Both players could check their work by knowing if the picture looks right.

    A pair of students work together for this symmetry activity. The students sit across from one another, with playing cards dealt for each student. A ruler or other dividing line separates one student's side from the other. One player starts as the leader, and places one of their cards down on the table. The player on the other side of the line follows the leader in an attempt to match the first player's moves perfectly on their side of the divider.

This activity can be modified for gifted students by having them record their predictions about which particles will sink and which particles will float, rather than solely making the observations. This activity can also be modified for older grades by having them do the same thing. The older students can also be told to gather material that is sand, silt, and clay, and try to keep these in separate jars.

    Students gather dirt samples from different outdoor areas and fill a jar with their dirt samples. The teacher will add water until the jar is two-thirds full and the students will take turns shaking their jar for two minutes. Each group will allow the contents in their jar to settle for fifteen to thirty minutes. Have the students make observations about how the dirt settled. The heaviest pieces of soil will settle first. Have the students identify the different-sized particles.

      The Design Process: Identify a need or problem to be solved; brainstorm potential solutions; throughout the entire design process, document the design with drawings (including labels) in a portfolio or notebook so that the process can be replicated; select a solution to the need or problem; select the most appropriate materials to develop a solution that will meet the need; evaluate and test the design. This activity can be adapted for gifted students by allowing them to first draw a blueprint of their model. This will allow them to make predictions and hypothesis about their cube model and their tag board model. These students can then record their observations and their conclusions about their final product. This activity can also be adapted for younger grades by giving the students more materials to help them balance their models. Also, allowing the younger students to work in partners, rather than pairs, will allow them to more freely express their ideas. Working with a partner will give each student the opportunity to make sure their ideas are heard. For younger students, omitting the blueprint may also be helpful. Rather, having the students simply draw a picture of their model with labels may be more appropriate.

    Children use styrofoam cubes to design and construct an object that will balance on your finger. Also, another challenge can be given to the students after completing the first challenge. Students use tag board to design and construct a model figure that will balance on a high wire. Students should draw their own blueprint to illustrate what they did and what they discovered.

In first grade, part of your child's science unit will be learning about the characteristics of different habitats. He'll discuss geography, learn about different kinds of environments, and talk about what kinds of animals live where. You could make a "grocery list" and give them a spending amount and demonstrate - or + integers!

    The Lincoln High Dive: 5th Grade Science Experiment Newton's first law states that an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force.  This experiment also illustrates gravity. Supplies: A Lincoln penny (or other small coin), a piece of card stoic or stiff paper, a film canister, baby food jar, or other similar size container with a mouth slightly larger than a penny, a pencil or pen, and scissors.

This activity can be modified for ELL students, gifted students, etc. by using fewer shapes, as well as shapes that are easier to identify. In the other sense, it can be modified to include more shapes that are more difficult to identify. This activity could also be used in other subject areas, such as science. It could be used to identify different classifications of plants and animals. It could also be used in foreign language. The students could read a vocabulary word in the foreign language, and then have to say the correct vocabulary work in English.

    Children make a game board displaying different shapes they should know (polygon, quadrilateral, parallelogram, etc.). Each child roles the die and moves that number of spaces. If that player can correctly identify the shape in their space, they roll again. The first one to the end and back wins!

This activity can be used with ELL students by having them simply count the spaces, rather than finding the matching number from the die. The gifted students can be given cards, rather than die, with simple math problems on them. The student would move their froggy to the number on the board that is the solution to their math problem. For example, if their card read "3 + 2", the child would move their froggy to the 5 space. This activity could be used with older grades by using the card concept, but using multiplication or division problems.

    Crow Creativity: 5th Grade / Can you solve a problem as creatively as a crow?  Download PDF 1. Build a tricky tube puzzle to find out if your friends can solve a problem like a crow. A clear plastic tube is best, but a paper towel roll, cut down to about 8 inches, will work too. 2. Make a basket out of tin foil. The basket should be big enough to hold a small cookie. 3. Tear some strips off a roll of duct tape. Lay the roll of tape flat on a table and fit the tube inside the center of the duct tape roll. Then use the duct tape strips to tape the tube in place so that the tube stays upright. Tape along the side. Do not cover the openings of the tube in tape. 4. Put a cookie in your basket and drop the basket into the tube so it goes to the bottom of the tube with the handle facing up. 5. Place about 5 twist ties or a piece of long metal wire next to your tube. 6. Find a friend to solve this problem. Tell your friend that there is a cookie at the bottom of the tube. Your friend can have the cookie but has to get the cookie out of the tube first without lifting up the tube.       I love this game. There is really no need to come up with new ways to extend this activity, as the students pass each level they get a little more difficult! I think kids will LOVE this activity and not even realize they are learning! This will be good for working on introducing computer skills as well. Be sure to go over how to use the mouse for younger grades and ELL and special need students.

  • pennies and dimes on a piggy bank bulletin board I also count the first 100 days of school. On a bulletin board I have a pig pink piggy bank cut out. Everyday we put up a penny (velcro spots on the bulletin board and on back of large paper coins). When we get 10 pennies, I take them down, change to a dime and stick it in the bank.       This would be a wonderful connection to literature and a service learning project. Are you familiar with the counting rice website where the students calculate math problems while earning rice for people living in third world countries?

    I would modify this idea to include nickels and quarters also.  The students add one penny for each day.  When ten pennies accumulate, a dime is substituted.  Perhaps they add a nickel for each rainy day until five nickels accumulate (and a quarter is substituted.)  We would skip count by fives and tens (depending on what we have on our piggy) until we can total our amount.  Each day we will accumulate more of each.
