"The fundamental goal of the Urban Institute's Arts and Culture Indicators Project (ACIP) is to help policymakers make better decisions for neighborhoods and cities. To this end, ACIP provides researchers, practitioners, and policymakers with information about the presence and role of arts and culture in communities-how arts and culture affect neighborhood conditions and community dynamics. Specifically, ACIP develops quantifiable measures of arts and culture and integrates them into quality of life measurement systems that can compare conditions across communities and in the same community over time. Launched in the late 1990s with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, ACIP's basic premises are (a) that a healthy place to live includes opportunities for and the presence of arts, culture, and creative expression, (b) that arts, culture, and creative expression are important determinants of how communities fare, and by extension (c) that full understanding of U.S. communities is inherently impossible without including these important perspectives."

The Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions is a legally-binding international agreement that ensures artists, cultural professionals, practitioners and citizens worldwide can create, produce, disseminate and enjoy a broad range of cultural goods, services and activities, including their own. It was adopted because the international community signalled the urgency for the implementation of international law that would recognise: The distinctive nature of cultural goods, services and activities as vehicles of identity, values and meaning; That while cultural goods, services and activities have important economic value, they are not mere commodities or consumer goods that can only be regarded as objects of trade.

Through vision, leadership, and service, the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) works to integrate arts and culture in all aspects of community life. RACC serves the Portland, Oregon Metropolitan Region, including Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties.RACC provides grants for artists, nonprofit organizations and schools; manages an internationally acclaimed public art program; raises money and awareness for the arts through workplace giving; convenes forums, networking events and other community gatherings; provides workshops and other forms of technical assistance for artists; and oversees a program to integrate arts and culture into the standard curriculum in public schools throughout the region through "The Right Brain Initiative.

Fractured Atlas empowers artists, arts organizations, and other cultural sector stakeholders by eliminating practical barriers to artistic expression, so as to foster a more agile and resilient cultural ecosystem.

Fractured Atlas looks like an amazing organization, John. Talking about it class today really piqued my curiosity. I've never heard of it and am going to look more into it.

The Hult Center is operated by the City of Eugene's Cultural Services Division, as part of the City's Library, Recreation & Cultural Services Department. Its mission is to enrich the cultural life by providing arts in Eugene.

"The University of Oregon's Museum of Natural and Cultural History protects significant collections, enhances knowledge, and encourages stewardship of human and natural history through research, preservation, and education." My own little place of work here on campus; this non profit organization encompasses the cultural and natural history of the Native Oregonians, New exhibits opened recently!

Each day ArtsJournal features link to stories culled from around the internet, including blogs and more than 200 English-language newspapers, magazines and publications featuring writing about arts and culture. Stories from sites that charge for access have generally been excluded. The current AJ site is the fifth design. In 2003 we added blogs and the site now features more than 60 prominent writers on culture. We expect to keep adding to the number with individuals, group and limited-time group debate blogs."

Free and almost free ideas for art and culture lovers visiting Washington, DC

Thelma Golden, curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem, talks through three recent shows that explore how art examines and redefines culture. The "post-black" artists she works with are using their art to provoke a new dialogue about race and culture - and about the meaning of art itself.

The Willamette Valley Music Festival is an exciting annual event held on the UO campus during the ASUO Spring Street Faire. The festival is planned by student coordinators for the students of UO and the community at large. WVMF features three stages, live music and cultural workshops. We focus on sustainability to produce a zero waste event. The WVMF is dedicated to enriching the cultural experience of Oregonians by showcasing new artists and ideas. Wampire After forming Wampire, Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps steadily began to make a name for themselves in the same Portland, OR, scene that has produced labelmates STRFKR as well as Unknown Mortal Orchestra. It makes sense, then, that Wampire came to Polyvinyl's attention when the duo opened for STRFKR at a hometown Portland show and that UMO's bassist Jacob Portrait produced Wampire's debut full-length, Curiosity.
