Earlier studies associated the first year of college with a dramatic increase in body weight, termed the "freshman 15". However, recent studies showed that weight gain might be smaller. The purpose of this review was to evaluate the extent of observed weight/body composition changes, including factors associated with them, among students entering university. Searches were conducted for studies examining weight/body composition changes during freshman semesters. Most studies were not comprehensive in assessing numerous potential causative factors for weight gain. Methods for assessing diet, physical activity, and behavioral factors varied among studies. Weight changes were often not quantified by measures of body composition (lean/fat) to ascertain that changes were limited just to gains in fat mass. Overall, weight changes ranged from 0.7-3.1 kg, but among individuals who gained weight, the range was narrower, 3.1-3.4 kg. There may be specific groups of students with a greater predisposition for weight gain and future research should focus on identifying those groups.

Some of these children even prefer text messaging to actual conversation and have developed a knowledge of an abbreviated language used in text messages known as "textisms." Many studies have focused on the effects of "textisms" in the language of adults, but few have focused on children and how extreme exposure to text messaging affects their development of language. The authors strive to evaluate these effects in this article, which describes a study they performed. The first part of the study analyzed how the number of text messages sent along with the knowledge of "textisms" affect performance on a standardized test known as the Key Stage test. The second part focused on the link between the use of "textisms" and spelling and writing. From this study and the results it produced, the authors determined that, in general, there is not a connection between text messaging and poor writing and reading abilities.

This article proposed a study of college juniors and seniors to determine what their actual health literacy was and what health literacy was expected of them. This study had many factors in their students that they too into consideration, including gender, race, and declared major. The study concluded that over 98% of the college students that they researched had an adequate literacy level.

This study tested over two thousand students on their financial behaviors, financial tendencies, and financial knowledge. The study showed that students who had grown up with parents with good financial tendencies, also showed these strong tendencies. The study also said that when the students tested had developed good techniques at a young age, they were more then likely to have good techniques as adults. Lastly, the study confirmed that it takes a combination of financial literacy, financial behavior, and financial knowledge together in order to achieve a set of strong techniques.

Web. 21 Nov. 2010. Bullying has taken on a new form as it has started to occur through the Internet and cell phones and has begun to be known as "cyberbullying." This article focuses on a study in which students of secondary schools took a survey on how often the had been bullied through electronic means. In the first study, phone call and text messaging bullying were most frequent. In the second study, phone call and instant messaging were most frequent and text messaging next. Both studies discovered that cyberbullying takes place more often outside of school than inside school. This can be stopped maybe by informing parents more and including this topic in education.

This study dealt with the long-term effects of different kinds of child abuse. Nearly four hundred college students studied many aspects of child abuse history. What these students found was that when abuse is present, it is typical for more than one kind to be used. Every type of abuse was followed by certain symptoms, and whoever experienced more than one kind of abuse experienced numerous symptoms. Therefore, it is essential to study all types of abuse when doing research.

Students tend to eat fewer fruits and vegetables on a daily basis\nand report high intake of high-fat, high-calorie foods.To study the phenomenon of food selection, the heath belief model was applied to predict the likelihood of healthy eating among university students. The purpose of the experiment was to bring awareness to the students at the end to show them what possible mistakes, or poor expenditures they had made. The study showed that when students tracked how they spent their money, they universally increased their spending knowledge, and made very few careless purchases. When these students actually tracked how they spent their money the study showed that they realized the values that their parents and guardians had taught them.

The study involved various IQ tests and analysis of artistic ability. The studies were conducted at several schools of varying age groups. Bottorf examines the results and how they prove and disprove that the two areas are related.

The Alphabetic Braille and Contracted Braille Study looked at the reading a writing skills of children studying Braille. Their main objective was to learn about the reading experiences of blind children who learned how to read using alphabetic Braille, or in other words had learned the alphabet first, instead of learning the different symbols for words. It was proven, however, in the study that the earlier a student starting studying Braille the better they were at knowing vocabulary, reading the Braille, and comprehending it. They found no link to whether a student was better in reading due to the fact that they learned the Braille alphabet first or if they learned Braille symbols.

This article was about a study that was conducted on students from Herkimer County Community College. The study was a nutritional survey that was created to examine the nutritional knowledge and exercise habits of college students. In addition to this the study also took the students MBI before they took the exam. Majoirty of the 453 that students of that took survey failed to know basic knowledge of nutrition. In addition to this many of these students 40% of the students were overweight.

Instead of looking at what the athlete knows, the study examined what athletes failed to know. By recognizing what the athletes at what the athletes do not know nutritional professionals can address the athletes on those topics. They conducted their research by giving Iranian college baseball and football players a 2-part questionnaire on sports nutrition knowledge. The results of the study showed that athletes knew little about nutrition knowledge. The researchers believe that their inadequate knowledge may contribute to poor diet. Overall, this study showed that athletes did not have a well understanding of nutrition.

Some of these studies have found that full-time students are more at risk to develop these addictions and that these addictions are related to some psychological and behavioral disorders. To see if these observations are correct, a study was performed in which three hundred and thirty-seven college students participated. The first thing that was determined was that there was not a correlation between internet or cell phone over-use and substance abuse or gambling addiction. The second was that there was a correlation between technology over-use and psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. The third was that healthy behavior and technology over-use are not related.

It was done with 110 undergraduate women to see what they thought about the images the media was projecting toward them and how it effects how they see themselves. It was also done to see what would help stop this from continuing to happen to these young women. Throughout the study it was shown that with the help of this "intervention" the women began to question whether or not the images were really what ideal beauty looks like. This shows that through media literacy something like this can be stopped and women can feel better about their body image.
