Low-income black and Hispanic low-income women with children living in major cities in the U.S. were studied and no concrete signs of physical assault were shown in relation to their low self-esteem.

The study that was done was a 25-year study of the heath, development and adjustment of 1,265 New Zealand children. The article deals with the relationship of severe child sexual abuse and mental health symptoms during the adult years. Respondants of the survey taken showed that in the thirties and fourties that if they were attacked by more than one abuser and did not discuss their abuse within one year of the attack they had a greater number of mental health symptoms. The clients who are at higher risk of mental health symptoms should be assessed by professionals.

It is believed that if exposed to abuse and neglect during childhood it could possibly affect one's relationships with others throughout their life and also it can affect one's self-image of themselves (i.e. low self-esteem). Questionnaires were completed by 301 college men and women, nearly 50 percent of both. They answered questions that dealt with their experiences and what they witnessed as children and if they have been affected by it both physically and psychologically.
