"My daughter already knows how to multiply four-digit numbers, so third grade math is too easy for her. She needs to be accelerated." There's lots of research to support acceleration as a strategy for gifted learners. The Acceleration Institute, part of the Belin-Blank Center at the University of Iowa, recently produced a report entitled "A Nation Empowered" which details the enormous benefits to accelerating a student when he or she is performing well above grade level. Researcher Jonathan Wei of Duke University says, "All students deserve to learn something new each day." In math, the obvious way to learn something new is to accelerate the instruction, letting the student go on to the next topic or grade level. But "learn something new" is not the same as "learn the next thing on the district's scope and sequence.""

"What separates the successful mobile learning projects from the unsuccessful? This is a 'million dollar' question, and I've thought long and hard about it. From the 17 large 1:1 projects I've worked on, only three have been truly successful in producing transformational learning. "The big push for education technology is coming from a handful of sources. There's the teachers, the administrators, the students, and the technology producers. Technology is not the final solution to improving education, though. Far from it. Education technology is a powerful tool in a teacher's toolkit to create effective learning opportunities. School administrators, trustees, superintendents and parents will not be impressed by an iPhone case downloaded from the internet to roll off the expensive new 3D printer. Instead, educators should encourage students to use these printers to create original designs that are more than just tchotchkes. Projects that allow students to create something "bigger" than the design itself are the most appealing. The 3D printer then becomes a tool that enables students to craft works they would otherwise be incapable of producing."

"The Maker Movement is a new trend based on old school traditions in which the philosophy of doing, building, and creating prevails over just simply buying. Instead of going to the toy store, people are learning how to design and 3D print their own toys. Instead of shopping for furniture, people are going to local community workshops like TechShop and building their own custom chairs and tables. The Maker Mentality creates a powerful paradigm shift by eliminating the separation between consumer and producer. By looking at the benefits and upsides of the Maker Movement and analyzing why it has reemerged, we can use it productively in the classroom by intertwining these new techniques with the classic methods such as lecture, reading, and so on."
