ISTE 2015: Takeaway Tips for a Library Maker Space | ISTE 2015 | School Library Journal - 3 views

  •
"The maker movement was front and center at the 2015 ISTE conference-and that's a good thing for me. After following maker initiatives with great interest for some time now, I have the opportunity to design a maker space this year for 6th-12th grade students at my school, Worcester (MA) Academy. A search of this year's program at ISTE, held June 28 to July 1 in Philadelphia, using the term "constructivist learning/maker movement" resulted in 67 related sessions. The ISTE Librarians Network hosted a maker station at their Digital Age Playground and convened a panel on library maker spaces, featuring elementary and middle school librarians, a school administrator, and the coordinator of a public library maker initiative. Vendors and exhibitors demonstrated tools, lessons, and ideas for maker spaces. Meanwhile, a four-hour Maker Playground Wednesday morning drew a huge crowd of attendees. One of my goals at the conference was to gather ideas and tips to help me create my library's maker space. Here are some highlights of what I discovered at ISTE."

ISTE Says Watch Out for Coding, Immersive Tech This School Year -- THE Journal - 2 views

  •
"The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) this week named five technology trends to watch in the 2017-2018 school year. Serving approximately 100,000 teachers, administrators, ed tech specialists and other education stakeholders worldwide, ISTE has a comprehensive view of the K-12 education landscape and offers a unique perspective on emerging learning technologies, according to CEO Richard Culatta. "With improved connectivity and increasingly impactful educator professional learning around the use of technology, many students will have new experiences as the bell rings to start a new school year," Culatta said the announcement.   An ISTE educator from Wisconsin says coding can be taught to students as young as kindergarten. First, the organization called coding "the international language of problem-solving" and says every student will need to know the basics of computer science. "Teachers are helping students attain problem-solving skills by infusing coding and computational thinking into courses across the curriculum and encouraging students to become digital content creators," the organization wrote."

"s mentioned in last week's post, Affordable ISTE 2011, I attend a lot of conferences. I always bring my laptop, but when I'm on the road my mobile devises are indispensible. My cell phone (an iPhone 3) is usually stuffed in my back pocket and I carry my iPad around in my small conference bag. At most conferences, I leave my laptop in my hotel room and use it at night to answer lengthy emails and maybe write a blog post or two. "

ISTE 2013: 5 Takeaways from Jane McGonigal's Opening Keynote | EdTech Magazine - 4 views

  •
"McGonigal's remarks included a bevy of interesting facts about gaming, as well as a group play exercise - what she called "massively multiplayer thumb wrestling" - and peeks at two of her recent alternate reality games: EVOKE (2010), a "crash course in changing the world"; and Find the Future (2011), which challenged 500 student authors to write a book in one night while inside the New York Public Library. Here are five key things McGonigal wanted ISTE 2013 attendees to know about gaming and education:"

Teach Coding in the Classroom: Resources from ISTE '14 | Edutopia - 0 views

"I was super excited to attend Hack Education (originally called "EdubloggerCon"), an all-day unconference held the Friday before the formal start of ISTE 2014. This interactive day of learning, now in its eighth year, was touted to me as the event to attend in Atlanta, and it did not disappoint. The informal, small-group conversations were inclusive and welcoming. The "rule of two feet" meant that if you needed to move, you were encouraged. And session topics were diverse -- on the schedule were discussions about maker education, augmented reality, design thinking, game-based learning, coding in the classroom, digital storytelling, and many, many more!"

ISTE | Big maker ideas don't require big-ticket items - 2 views

  • Start by picking a project that aligns with your curricular goals and allow students to create artifacts that demonstrate their knowledge. The learning, and the off-the-charts engagement, comes from building or creating something to show what they’ve learned.
  • “A makerspace can be more extravagant, of course. There’s nothing more exciting than seeing a 3D-printed item emerge out of nothing,” Vrotny says. “But you can start simply and inexpensively.”
  •
"As is often the case with innovations in learning and teaching, getting started with that first lesson or project is the biggest hurdle. So it is with making, a learning approach that allows students to learn by doing and solve problems with tinkering and trial and error. Despite what you may have heard, maker projects and makerspaces don't require expensive equipment like 3D printers or laser cutters.   Check out the small-scale maker projects that attendees were doing in the Maker Playground at ISTE 2015:"

"This presentation will look at how easy it is for a district or school to enhance communication with their community through the development of a mobile app, without having to hire a mobile device programmer or a company to develop an app. Participants with their own device will spend part of the session starting to build their own app and should leave the session feeling comfortable in their ability to finish their app after ISTE."

Logo Foundation Publications | Logo Update - 0 views

"In September, 1982, Tom Lough started The National Logo Exchange with Steve Tipps and Glen Bull as a monthly newsletter for Logo teachers and parents. In January, 1986 The International Logo Exchange was launched with Dennis Harper as the editor-in-chief. In September, 1986 these two publications were combined and renamed Logo Exchange . The International Council for Computers in Education (ICCE) acquired the publication in 1987, designating it as the official journal of the ICCE Special Interest Group for Logo-Using Educators (SIG-Logo). In 1989 ICCE was renamed the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). Logo Exchange continued as the ISTE journal for SIG-Logo until the fall of 1999, when the SIG was dissolved. The collected issues of Logo Exchange provide a window on Logo developments and Logo teaching over a span of 17 years. We are making these historic documents available here on the Logo Foundation Web site. All 18 volumes of The National Logo Exchange are posted here along with the four issues of The International Logo Exchange. We also include Last Logo Exchange, a collection of essays written by the former editors of Logo Exchange 15 years after it ceased publication. Click on an issue below to see a PDF scan of the original publication. These documents may be downloaded, reproduced, and copied for personal and educational uses provided that you do not charge for copies, and that you include the original copyright notices on them."

ISTE | 3 quick tips for igniting creativity through making - 1 views

  • 1. Establish a maker camp or build an arcade in the style of Caine’s Arcade.
  • 2. When establishing a makerspace, focus on the students first.
  • 3. Remember, it’s not about the space, it’s about the mindset.
  •
"If you want to be a maker, you have to learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Allowing students to play, collaborate, build and make freely gives them powerful learning opportunities. So how can you support students through making and spark a maker movement at your school? Here are three tips from ISTE 2015 maker movement session presenters:"
