    "Prior to presenting Hour of Code lessons in my classroom, and eventually to my entire school, my knowledge of computer programming was limited to knowing it had something to do with ones and zeroes. I understood a lot of work went into constructing the digital world we now rely on, but what that work entailed was hazy at best.     "As I attempt to catch up on mass amounts of unread email, I enjoy browsing the various resources that come through my inbox.  Because of the volume of email I receive, I find myself either deleting the conversation or clicking to see the site for a few seconds.  If the site has a video, I'll usually play it for a few seconds, unless it captures my attention.  Then I'll view the entire video and spend a bit of time exploring the site.  If the site's interface is clunky, I'll navigate away and continue with my email.  However, when the site is user-friendly AND the resource seems valuable, I find myself compelled to share.  Typically, I'll Tweet it out possibly post on Facebook.  Occasionally I'll also Pin it on Pinterest, if it's a resource I can see myself also using down the road.  On very rare occasions I find myself compelled to actually open up a new tab and begin blogging about the resource.  This is one of those very rare times.  "

Several studies from the 1970s on have looked into the effect that the amount of time teachers pause after asking a question has on learners. In visiting many classrooms in the United States and other parts of the world, I've found that, with few exceptions, these studies are still accurate. For example, according to work done by Mary Budd Rowe in 1972 and Robert J. Stahl in 1994, pausing for three or more seconds showed a noticeable positive impact on learning. Yet the average length that teachers pause was found to be 0.9 seconds. Wow.

Mission failed. Now I did feel like an idiot. But I was also quite angry. The thing is, I hadn't checked my Twitter feed for over two hours. I'd been taking notes. I walked down the hall and began to think. I realized that my friends and I are glued to our phones all day long. That's just the way we are. Phones are crucial to our identities and lifestyle. Telling people in my generation to put our phones away is not a solution. Just ask our teachers how that has worked for them. Even so, the workplace is not ready for how often we are going to pull out our phones. Rather than fight it, I think the other generations are going to have to learn to let go and adapt to us. The reality is that social media breaks take less than 15 seconds and can be re-energizing. That's less time than the widely accepted practice of taking breaks for coffee or snacks. That said, there is no denying that we will need to be mentored so we know when even a 15-second break is unacceptable. The good news is that teachers have been trying to coach us about this for years. We can learn and we can adapt, if the other generations adapt, too."
