KS3/4 Computing Lesson Plan - Teach Computational Thinking Skills with a Touch of Magic... - 4 views

  •
"This lesson/series of lessons is designed to give pupils an introductory understanding of key computational thinking skills and help them to discover that in fact, computers don't solve problems, but are used by us to aid the problem solving process.

This will be shown by using the BBC Micro:Bit device, both emulated via online tools and with a real Micro:Bit if available - and adding a touch of magic."

Seen a fake news story recently? You're more likely to believe it next time - Journalis... - 0 views

""Pope Francis Shocks World, Endorses Donald Trump for President"; "ISIS Leader Calls for American Muslim Voters to Support Hillary Clinton."

These examples of fake news are from the 2016 presidential election campaign. Such highly partisan fabricated stories designed to look like real reporting probably played a bigger role in that bitter election than in any previous American election cycle. The fabrications spread on social media and into traditional news sources in a way that tarnished both major candidates' characters.

Sometimes the stories intentionally damage a candidate; sometimes the authors are driven only by dollar signs.

Questions about how and why voters across the political spectrum fell for such disinformation have nagged at social scientists since early in the 2016 race. The authors of a new study address these questions with cognitive experiments on familiarity and belief."

Technically a Librarian: The #1 Makerspace Resource: Your Students! - 3 views

  •
"If you are looking to start a makerspace at your school or library, there are a wealth of resources available to help you get started. I would be so lost if it weren't for many of these. They also have a lot of research supporting the maker movement.

    MakerEd.org
    Makeit@YourLibrary
    Remake Learning
    Makerspace.com

In addition, there have been a few key individuals whose blogs I follow religiously.

Renovated Learning - blog of Diana Rendina @DianaLRendina
Create, Collaborate, Innovate - blog of Colleen Graves @gravescolleen
Worlds of Learning  - blog of Laura Fleming @NMHS_lms

These resources have been invaluable to me in determining projects, designing the space, and the many planning and logistics that are involved. They've also helped me anticipate and work through any issues that may arise.

What these resources didn't provide was the voice from my students and teachers. No matter how many reputable sources or blogs I consulted, I wasn't getting the input and feedback that really mattered. "

Kleinspiration: The Homework Help Desk: Amazing [FREE] Interactive Resource to Help Kid... - 4 views

  •
"As I attempt to catch up on mass amounts of unread email, I enjoy browsing the various resources that come through my inbox.  Because of the volume of email I receive, I find myself either deleting the conversation or clicking to see the site for a few seconds.  If the site has a video, I'll usually play it for a few seconds, unless it captures my attention.  Then I'll view the entire video and spend a bit of time exploring the site.  If the site's interface is clunky, I'll navigate away and continue with my email.  However, when the site is user-friendly AND the resource seems valuable, I find myself compelled to share.  Typically, I'll Tweet it out possibly post on Facebook.  Occasionally I'll also Pin it on Pinterest, if it's a resource I can see myself also using down the road.  On very rare occasions I find myself compelled to actually open up a new tab and begin blogging about the resource.  This is one of those very rare times.  "

Kleinspiration: A Helpful Resource to Support Close Reading in the Classroom via Snap!L... - 1 views

"The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) describes close reading in light of the Common Core State Standards.  Close, analytic reading stresses engaging with a text of sufficient complexity directly and examining meaning thoroughly and methodically, encouraging students to read and reread deliberately.  Directing student attention on the text itself empowers students to understand the central ideas and key supporting details.  It also enables students to reflect on the meanings of individual words and sentences; the order in which sentences unfold; and the development of ideas over the course of the text, which ultimately leads students to arrive at an understanding of the text as a whole. (PARCC, 2011, p.7)"
