edublogs: Fresh research showing the damage of filtering 'real world' technology - 0 views

  • Students in schools around the world find that their research, creativity and learning potential is seriously curbed by filtering and lack of use of their own mobile and gaming devices in schools. This comes from research spanning the Americas, brought to my attention by its author, Research Consultant Kim Farris-Berg
  • "In 2007, [filtering] was high school students’ number one obstacle to using technology at their schools (53 percent). For middle school students, two obstacles tied for the greatest barrier (39 percent each): “there are rules against using technology at school” and “teachers limit technology use”. It’s likely that when students face obstacles to using technology at school, they also face obstacles to inquiry-based learning opportunities which can include online research, visualizations, and games."
  • "Students reported that other major obstacles to using technology at school are not being able to access email accounts and slow internet access. Perhaps these are the reasons why just 34 percent of teachers communicate with students via email. Teachers are certainly online; just not with students. Ninety percent of teachers, parents, and school leaders use email to communicate with one another about school."

  • Q: What are Diigo Educator Accounts? These are special premium accounts provided specifically to K-12 & higher-ed educators. Once your Diigo Educator application is approved, your account will be upgraded to have these additional features: You can create student accounts for an entire class with just a few clicks (and student email addresses are optional for account creation) Students of the same class are automatically set up as a Diigo group so they can start using all the benefits that a Diigo group provides, such as group bookmarks and annotations, and group forums. Privacy settings of student accounts are pre-set so that only teachers and classmates can communicate with them. Ads presented to student account users are limited to education-related sponsors.
  • Student accounts have the following special settings to protect the privacy and safety of students. Classmates in the same class are automatically added as friends with one another to facilitate communication, but students cannot add anyone else as friends except through email. Students can only communicate with their friends and teachers.  No one except their friends can send message, group invite, or write on their profile wall. Student profiles will not be indexed for People Search, nor made available to public search engines.

About | FreshBrain - 4 views

  • Technology is advancing at an accelerating rate. Schools are providing teens with a traditional education, but they are unable to keep up with this evolution. Limited individual computer accessibility, minimal hands-on training for teachers, and insufficient technical support are all obstacles many schools face. While the availability of curriculum continues to grow, the lack of time and skills required to select, integrate, and teach with technology continues to be a barrier. In addition, funding to provide updated computers, ongoing maintenance, training and support will always be a challenge. The result is an inability for schools to provide the time, space, or platform for teens to fully utilize technology, either individually or in groups. This lack of integration prevents teens from gaining skills and extending their abilities with technology. Therefore, teens miss the opportunity to find their passion with, or through the use of technology, including the chance to interact with others.

4 Tips for Integrating Social Media Into the Classroom - 2 views

  • Instead of dismissing social media as distracting or destructive, schools should embrace it as an essential part of the curriculum. Not only does this limit the potential for students to abuse the technology, but it opens a new set of valuable educational tools.

The MET Research Paper: Achievement of What? « The Core Knowledge Blog - 3 views

  • A new study by the Measures of Effective Teaching (MET) Project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, finds that students’ perceptions of their teachers correlate with the teachers’ value-added scores; in other words, “students seem to know effective teaching when they experience it.” The correlation is stronger for mathematics than for ELA; this is one of many discrepancies between math and ELA in the study. According to the authors, “outside the early elementary grades when students are first learning to read, teachers may have limited impacts on general reading comprehension.” This peculiar observation should raise questions about curriculum, but curriculum does not come up in the report.

Why Social Media Tools Have a Place in the Classroom| The Committed Sardine - 1 views

  • To suggest that tapping this for educational purposes is pointless also suggests that people mistrust the medium as a whole and don’t understand how it can be used for good. We’ve already seen that Twitter and Facebook can help create change around the world. It can also do a lot of harm in the hands of bullies and criminals. But the technology is neutral. It can be made to work in a classroom setting if you set the right limits.

Red Tape - That famous space shuttle photo: When is sharing stealing? - 3 views

  • The law, however, is not. The mere act of taking a photograph means the photographer holds the copyright for that picture. Sharing it on a social media site does nothing to limit or reduce that fundamental right,
  • “There's definitely an ethics issue here,"

  • The flipped classroom is a simple concept that needs no title. Good teaching, regardless of discipline, should always limit passive transfer of knowledge in class, and promote learning environments built on the tenants of inquiry, collaboration and critical thinking.

The Problem Is Wasted Time, Not Screen Time | Getting Smart - 0 views

  •
"Are today's students spending too much time in front of computer screens? The more important question is: are students engaged in powerful learning experiences and, whenever possible, given voice and choice in what, how, and when they learn? Digital technology can powerfully facilitate this process, if thoughtful adults deploy it wisely. Otherwise, it can be mind-numbing, or worse."

A Mastercard or Visa debit card that may be used to make purchases in more than 150 different currencies is connected to the account. Additionally, Revolut gives users the option to send and receive money in different currencies and conduct international money transfers. How to Buy a verified Revolut account without getting scammed? The easiest approach to prevent being duped when purchasing a verified Revolut account is to conduct thorough research. Revolut accounts may be purchased from a number of reliable vendors, so before buying, take the time to read reviews and compare pricing. The best payment method is always a credit or debit card. Be cautious if you're requested to pay by PayPal or a wire transfer as this is a popular scam technique. Finally, make sure to check user reviews to see if the account you're purchasing has a decent reputation.
