Diigo is what surfing should have always been like. Diigo is a combination of many things together, social bookmarking, storing clippings, annotations, tagging, search, sticky notes and sharing of this information with others. It’s a great to store private web snippets.

It even takes advantage of the del.icio.us API so that items that you tag or bookmark with Diigo, are also tagged to your del.icio.us account. Where it is quite different from del.icio.us, is that you can also more fully annotate your bookmarked pages, and bookmarks can also be saved locally. You can highlight and tag specific images and paragraphs from web pages, and also add sticky notes. These sticky notes can be public or private. For example if I tag and add a sticky note to a page, I can also see other sticky notes left by others or I can send a notification to a colleague so that she can read my annotation and respond. I can also use Diigo to save my selections and annotations and review them later. I can also forward them on via email. The Diigo toolbar puts all of these tools at your disposal. A few weeks back I managed to score an invite to a new social bookmarking/annontation site called diigo. I am quite excited by the potential of a service such as this and its really starting to realise some of the oppourtunity out there. Essentially diigo lets you bookmark pages, tag those bookmarks, add comments to those bookmarks, highlight content within pages, add comments to those pages that are viewable by all diigo users and utilise all the community features your used to like subscribing to your friends lists. Thats not a list of features that springs out of the page, many of these ideas have been attempted previously. Its more the deftness that diigo handles these ideas with that makes it stand out from the pack. Theres also the fact that its all bundled into one service.

the best way to sum up a service like diigo is that it overlays a Web 2.0 service on top of Web 1 sites. Things like tagging, annotation, social bookmarking and social commenting are very Web 2.0 in nature. diigo allows you to apply these ideas to normal Web 1 style sites.

Take, for example the BBC News site. Theres an awfull lot of content on there, some of which I would be interested in the thoughts of others on. Currently only certain, carefully chosen stories feature comments. diigo, however, allows you to comment on these stories, furthermore you can highlight actual pieces of text within the story and comment on them. And then others can view your comments and add their own. It is possible to have a linear conversation based around single web pages or even paragraphs of content. When you take the potential of the above and add in a competant social bookmarking service you can begin to see where diigo is heading as a service. The diigo team are aware that there are numerous other services out there, the one that is certainly a huge obstacle in terms of social bookmarking is del.icio.us, a service that I absolutely love. To make the transition a bit easier you can import your bookmarks into diigo from del.icio.us, you can also automatically add your diigo bookmarks to del.icio.us

Diigois first and foremost a bookmarking service but one with more than one twists. Not only can you bookmark pages, sections but you can add private or public annotations (on top of the highlighted copied content) and add sticky notes too. You can export your bookmarks, import from your browser or deli.icio.us (I wish there were more options here) but Diigo has yet to offer an optml import option. You can also subscribe to other members feeds or specific tags. Recently they’ve added this blogging feature. I appreciate remote blogging. It saves times and you can update more frequently.

Diigo - experience feedback After 10 days of use to the daily newspaper, I am convinced of the interest of Diigo and I decided to adopt it. I continue by prudence to feed my Delicious account obeying the currency of our wise grandmothers: not to put all our eggs in the same pannier. Some additional assets of Diigo: It is possible to post with the choice: only its own annotations, all annotations thus including those of the thirds or any annotation. By recording new a bookmark, one can characterize it “with reading” it appears then in fat in the list; it is more easily locatable for a second reading. I use this function when I envisage to study the bookmarkée page again or when I wish to take again the tags after examination of the Web page. One can also post the list of all the bookmarks to reading. There are 2 even 3 types of possible annotations with Diigo: 1) you associate a comment the page - 2) you stick a post-it with comment directly in the page - 3) you underline an extract of the page. If you make a research and that you want réccupérer in an aggregate way your underlined comments, annotations and passages - nothing simpler: notch the bookmarks and click then on “extract highlights” in “more actions” (see the explanation) - Essential!! One can be registered with the list of a person even more specifically to the one of his tags.

I learned of them when I read about their service in the MIT Technology Review several weeks ago.  It’s by invite only, but I wrote and told them that they had to give me an account because last September I was emailing tech-savvy friends to ask if anyone could design a service exactly like this.  I was willing to pay for this — like flickr or Mars Edit — but diigo is in fact free.  No one took up my offer back in September, but by cosmic coincidence some electronic engineering professor geek at Berkeley was dreaming about the same thing and designed it. What it does is this: you read something on the web, you bookmark it using diigo.com (you do need to install a little diigo bookmarklet on the toolbar).  You assign a tag to it (if you want), or several.  Then, you can literally underline the passages that intrigue you, and — this is the cool bit I’ve been waiting for — you can add a “sticky” note (just like on flickr) that associates with the part you’ve just underlined.  When you look at your bookmarks, the list will show you how many annotations you have in each article you’ve bookmarked, and you can then expand that list to show you both the underlined bits as well as your “notes.”

Further, if you are a blogger (which I am no longer, thanks), you can blog your annotated and commented-upon bits directly to your blog.  Or you can badger your friends with your brilliant insights to that last political science article you read by forwarding your diigo-bookmarked articles…  Whatever.

diigo looks to be what will finally make project collabration practical - meaning folks will actually use it and not just talk about it.

Fortunately, Web programmers are working away at improvements. When I research for my show, I often print out Web pages and make notes on them. That's such a waste of paper! I try to be as "green" as possible.

That's were diigo comes in. It allows you to make annotations directly on Web pages. It also helps you manage your bookmarks. You can make these public or you can keep them to yourself. It's a valuable tool! You'll need to sign up for an account. And you should try the toolbar for Firefox or Internet Explorer. There's a bit of a learning curve. But I think you'll find it worthwhile. diigo.com

But Diigo! Diigo lets you annotate webpages, among other things. You create an account (all of these accounts are free), and then while you’re viesing a web page, you can highlight a bunch of text and, in effect, leave a permanent sticky note on that site, so whenever you view it, you can view your annotation. You can also make these annotations public to other diigo users. I have wanted a tool like this for at least five years. This changes everything.

I have only used 1 product in this genre: Google Notebook. In my experience it integrates tightly with Firefox, has a right click contextual menu option, ability to publicize or privatize multiple notebooks, etc.

I use Google Notebook, which is essentially the same thing. It has really helped me and changed the way I browse.

Sometimes bookmarking something you want to reference later doesn't quite do the trick since the page might change or you just can't remember what it was you found so interesting.

Judging by common bookmark tags, such as "Web 2.0," the Diigo community is full of tech-savvy users. Still, we find it straightforward enough that a dedicated bookmarking newbie shouldn't have a problem adopting Diigo as a research companion. Diigo is great for taking notes on Web pages and using them to collaborate with other users--and since we started using Diigo, we've lost our appetite for Del.icio.us.

SOURCING TIP: And Diigo was its name-O One thing I have been ranting about (online and offline) is the need for a tool that will allow researchers to seemlessly share their intelligence. Imagine (as I often have) the time that would be saved if I were to discover a resume online and then see a note left by one of my co-workers that reads, "Been here, done that and submitted the candidate." Wowzers! That would really cut-down on duplication of efforts wouldn't it?

Okay, so let me show you something  I really like and am recommending that research teams use - Diigo. Diigo may replace del.icio.us for me I’ve been a huge fan of del.icio.us and I’ve tried and rejected many of the potential replacements for the service. Recently I read about Diigo and I figured I’d give it a try. Turns out I love it very much.

Flock + Diigo + Wordpress = Disruptive Leap

But there is one thing missing, which is being able to store bookmarks and share them with friends. Sure, there are a few great social networking sites out there, del.icio.us being one of them. But they lack the ability to highlight parts of a story and add sticky notes that stays on that website. Diigo offers these two brilliant features via their Toolbar. It’s just like when you read an interesting book and highlight the important parts and somtimes add a comment via a Post-It note. Not another Toolbar you say. Well, Diigo has actually replaced all my other toolbars. Flock offers a toolbar with favorites which is more than enough to cover my favorite online destination hangouts: Yahoo!, Google, Amazon, Wikipedia et cetera. All other bookmarks are tagged in Diigo and News I get directly to Flock via RSS feeds.

I spent this afternoon installing, connecting and testing the above applications and instantly my online experience and productivity took a huge forward leap
