How do I search for bookmarks with "tag1 OR tag2 OR tag3..."? - 281 views

search tags help syntax boolean

How do I search for bookmarks with "tag1 OR tag2 OR tag3..." (particularly bookmarks in a specific group)?

Is there a place where the search syntax is defined?

    Thanks!

Sweet! Thank you for the answer... and all the details. I had stumbled upon that once and couldn't find it again. That helps a ton.

I'm going to use some unique IDs to mark family documents so that people can search for docs with info about members of their family, and now I can do it fairly easily without much other infrastructure with Diigo. I'm happy.

    Thanks again for the help!

It appears that this group-search functionality is no longer working. I can search for a single word or multiple inclusive words (eg. tag1 AND tag2), but my searches for alternative words (eg. tag1 OR tag2) do not work. For example, in the http://groups.diigo.com/group/tolman-family group, I'd like to find any of the following:

    1ndt-4r OR kjz6-4hg

It doesn't even have to be in tags; I'd be willing to search for these words in the comments or highlights (or maybe even the titles). Can anyone confirm or deny?

If this is possible, can I go further? This is ideal: tag:(1ndt-4r OR kjz6-4hg) AND content:(children AND pioneer)

I'm trying to find a way to get back to what we had before, hopefully before my presentation this weekend. :-) Is there an advanced group search like the advanced regular search (http://www.diigo.com/search_mana/advanced)? Give me any ideas and I'll try them out. Thanks in advance.

I see how my particular use-case is going to be a challenge. Let me try to explain and see if it's worth the work.

We want to search through a particular subset of bookmarks. (The subset is chosen based on their ancestry; we have a genealogy database, and we find their ancestors who have histories here http://histories.trentlarson.com/histories/view .) Once we've got their subset of bookmarks, we want to be able to search through that set for arbitrary words.

I can do this kind of search in my own bookmarks by using the tags to define the subset (of ancestors) and then they can do an arbitrary text search; for example: "tag:(1ngp-1w OR 1ndt-4r) text:(Julia)" http://www.diigo.com/search?adSScope=my&what=tag%3A(1ngp-1w%20OR%20%201ndt-4r)%20text%3A(Julia) So I suppose I could make a new account and be the gatekeeper of all bookmarks; but that's the downside, because I would love to allow people to tag content on their own and add it to our group without my intervention.

As far as I could tell, this worked in the previous version, but not with V4. So now for my questions:

    - Is it in the plans to add this? If so, is that 1 month or 1 year or 1 decade away? You can be honest. :-)

    - Is there another way to accomplish this, such as having everyone tag their own bookmarks and then doing a "tag:(1ngp-1w OR 1ndt-4r) text:(Julia)" search in everyone's bookmarks? I didn't get any success when I tried, but maybe I was doing it wrong.

    - Is there a "search within" feature I could use? I found this page when I was logged in, which seems to do exactly the kind of thing I need, but I cannot get to it when not logged in and I need to allow access to non-Diigo-registered people: http://www.diigo.com/search_mana/within?q=1ngp-1w+OR+1ndt-4r

    - Any other brainstorms welcome. Would it be easier to put the tags in the description or title... or even us a different concept than the tags to find our subsets? Would this be easier by leveraging the new "Library" or "Network" concepts? (I doubt it, since we absolutely must allow non-Diigo-registered users to do this kind of search, but I'm open to any brainstorms.) I keep considering other services, but nothing else comes as close to what I want out-of-the-box.

Thanks for any help! As always, it's good to see progress; there's definitely a lot of work going on, and I'm grateful for the active community tools and feedback. Cheers!

When I first started with Diigo, it only searched on the tags and annotations but not on the text of the bookmarks. I love that this has been added, especially since I can use it from my own service and pass the words as GET parameters.

    Kudos!

BTW, I've searched today and it appears to successfully find words (eg. Thanksgiving) in my group (eg. Family Histories) bookmarks, even though I've recently seen reports of full-text-search failures.

Can I jump to a list of bookmarks where all sticky notes are already expanded? - 29 views

I am cobbling together URLs directly into selections of my bookmarks, and I'd like for people to be able to see my notes immediately. So, instead of the two-step process of going to the page and hitting "Expand All", I'd like them to jump to the page and see everything expanded. Is this possible?

I tried GET parameters like "expandAll", to no avail. :-)

    Thanks!

searching through group tags ...and: What is the syntax for searches? - 40 views

search tags help

My immediate need: I'm trying to search my group's bookmarks for specific tags, but I want an "OR" search, eg. to pull up all bookmarks tagged with either "children" or "kids". How can I do this? Ultimately, I want to automatically construct URLs with the right settings for others, so I hope the end goal has a URL I can construct (like most of the other things you do, and thanks for that).

A broader question: What is the syntax for advanced searches? From trial and error and this forum, I've learned things like:
    - searches with the * wildcard
    - my tag searches with URL "user/[username]/tag1%20tag2"
    - group tag searches with URL "[group]/bookmark/tag/tag1+tag2"
    - there is some kind of syntax for grouping, because I saw something like "tag:(tag1+tag2)" after one of my searches, but I cannot duplicate it

Is there any page that lists all the syntax for searching (including things like the "tags:(...)" advanced features)? I've wanted that reference many times.

    Thanks for all your work!

I can copy a bookmark of my own to a group and it keeps the comments. Is there a way to copy a group bookmark with all its comments to my own bookmarks? Thanks.

extract annotations - 76 views

My "copy" button on my popup says "copy to clipboard"; so I click on that button and then go to a text editor (like Word or OpenOffice) and hit "paste" and then I have a document with all the content. (Does that answer the question?)

    > Okay, but when i click "copy" on the popup window, where is it being copied to, meaning, is it stored somewhere on diigo that i'm not aware of. If i'm just supposed to take the annotations and copy them to my computer, then what is the point of having a copy button on the popup window that does not actually do anything?
  • Trent Larson

I get the same thing (under a bookmark, "share", "extract", then "copy"), where it copies all the HTML in a format like this:

    ...

    I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.12.

bookmark tags don't show (and there's a "no_tag") - 56 views

In my group "Thomas Tolman Family Organization", I've got a couple of bookmarks that I've given a bunch of tags. However, those tags often don't show up in the "Bookmark Tags" section on the right side. Are they supposed to show instantly after I add/change them?

It also seems that it shows a different set if you're not logged in. Is there something I need to do to show them to everyone?

    Thanks!

Thanks for v3! (also: insecure password for openID; multi-word tags got split up) - 21 views

  • Trent Larson

I was afraid I'd have to wait a while for some fixes (eg. group full-text search), but the new version you promised works great. Not only that, but I love many of the new things: OpenID integration, many more links to browse the data, and forums and communities look nice.

Now hopefully you'll get some sleep, despite the new bugs you'll get. :- )

    Two issues I noticed:
    - When entering my password after signing in to OpenID, it was on an insecure (HTTP) page.
    - Some of my tags had spaces in them, and they're now listed as separate tags.

Good luck, and thanks for your improvements.

    Cheers!
  • Trent Larson

Ooops. That issue about separate tags: some of mine worked, so maybe that one had a difficulty, so nevermind.

Here's another trivial, grammatical thing: when I edit my tags, the message says: "successfully!"

What is wrong with my searches? - 21 views

I am trying to search for a word ("Grace") that is in the text of my bookmark (and a bookmark in my group "Thomas Tolman Family Organization"), but it never brings up any results. Why?
  • Trent Larson

OK, now it's 4 hours later and the search works when I search through my own bookmarks, but not when I search through my group's bookmarks or all bookmarks (full text). Is there a delay? (But even that doesn't totally make sense since I bookmarked that page last month.)
