Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D and risk of incident ovarian cancer. Tworoger SS, Lee IM, Buring JE, Rosner B, Hollis BW, Hankinson SE. Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev. 2007 Apr;16(4):783-8. PMID: 17416771 doi: 10.1158/1055-9965.EPI-06-0981 Overall, our results do not suggest that plasma vitamin D levels are associated with risk of ovarian cancer. However, we observed significant associations in some subgroups, which should be evaluated further in other studies because increasing vitamin D intake is an easy preventive measure to adopt.

High Prevalence of Vitamin D Deficiency Despite Supplementation in Premenopausal Women ... - 0 views

High prevalence of vitamin D deficiency despite supplementation in premenopausal women with breast cancer undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy. Crew KD, Shane E, Cremers S, McMahon DJ, Irani D, Hershman DL. J Clin Oncol. 2009 May 1;27(13):2151-6. Epub 2009 Apr 6. PMID: 19349547 DOI: 10.1200/JCO.2008.19.6162 Conclusion Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in women with breast cancer. The current recommended dietary allowance of vitamin D is too low to increase serum 25-OHD greater than 30 ng/mL. Optimal dosing for bone health and, possibly, improved survival has yet to be determined.

Low Vitamin D Status despite Abundant Sun Exposure -- Binkley et al. 92 (6): 2130 -- Jo... - 0 views

Low vitamin D status despite abundant sun exposure. Binkley N, Novotny R, Krueger D, Kawahara T, Daida YG, Lensmeyer G, Hollis BW, Drezner MK. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2007 Jun;92(6):2130-5. Epub 2007 Apr 10. PMID: 17426097 doi:10.1210/jc.2006-2250 CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that variable responsiveness to UVB radiation is evident among individuals, causing some to have low vitamin D status despite abundant sun exposure. In addition, because the maximal 25(OH)D concentration produced by natural UV exposure appears to be approximately 60 ng/ml, it seems prudent to use this value as an upper limit when prescribing vitamin D supplementation.

Vitamin D and Cancer Mini-Symposium: The Risk of Additional Vitamin D - 0 views

Evidence from clinical trials shows, with a wide margin of confidence, that a prolonged intake of 10,000IU/d of vitamin D3 poses no risk of adverse effects for adults, even if this is added to a rather high physiologic background level of vitamin D. Epub 2009 Apr 15. PMID: 19392870 DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2036.2009.04022.x Conclusions Our results support suggestions that serum 25(OH)D is inversely related to CRC risk.

Serum Levels of Free 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D in Vitamin D Toxicity -- Pettifor et al. 1... - 0 views

  •
Serum levels of free 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D in vitamin D toxicity. Pettifor JM, Bikle DD, Cavaleros M, Zachen D, Kamdar MC, Ross FP. Ann Intern Med. 1995 Apr 1;122(7):511-3. PMID: 7872586 CONCLUSIONS: Although the patients had normal or near-normal total 1,25-(OH)2D values, most patients had elevated free 1,25-(OH)2D levels. These findings suggest that elevated free 1,25-(OH)2D levels might play a role in the pathogenesis of hypercalcemia in vitamin D toxicity.

Vitamin D and cancer mini-symposium: the risk of additional vitamin D. Vieth R. Ann Epidemiol. 2009 Jul;19(7):441-5. Epub 2009 Apr 11. Review. PMID: 19364661 Conclusion The results of well-conducted trials of vitamin D lead to the conclusion that the current U.S. National Academy of Sciences-Institute of Medicine upper limit for vitamin D intake of 2000IU per day 1, 37 is excessively conservative. That intake would raise serum 25(OH)D by an average of about 50 nmol/L (20 ng/mL), well within the safe range of serum 25(OH)D concentrations that extends to 500 nmol/L (200 ng/mL). Intake of 4,000IU per day would raise serum 25(OH)D by an average of about 100 nmol/L (40 ng/mL). Even prolonged physiologic-replacement intake of 10,000IU per day of vitamin D3 would pose no known risk of adverse effects in virtually all adults.

Vitamin D Levels Linked To Asthma Severity - 0 views

  •
ScienceDaily (Apr. 24, 2009) - New research provides evidence for a link between vitamin D insufficiency and asthma severity. Serum levels of vitamin D in more than 600 Costa Rican children were inversely linked to several indicators of allergy and asthma severity, including hospitalizations for asthma, use of inhaled steroids and total IgE levels, according to a study that will appear in the first issue for May of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Vitamin D Deficiency Related To Increased Inflammation In Healthy Women - 0 views

  •
ScienceDaily (Apr. 8, 2009) - According to a recent study in the Archives of Internal Medicine, 75 percent of Americans do not get enough Vitamin D. Researchers have found that the deficiency may negatively impact immune function and cardiovascular health and increase cancer risk. Now, a University of Missouri nutritional sciences researcher has found that vitamin D deficiency is associated with inflammation, a negative response of the immune system, in healthy women.

Low Levels Of Vitamin D In Patients With Autoimmune Disease May Be Result, Not Cause, O... - 0 views

  •
ScienceDaily (Apr. 8, 2009) - Deficiency in vitamin D has been widely regarded as contributing to autoimmune disease, but a review appearing in Autoimmunity Reviews explains that low levels of vitamin D in patients with autoimmune disease may be a result rather than a cause of disease and that supplementing with vitamin D may actually exacerbate autoimmune disease.
