Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Concentration and Subsequent Risk of Type 2 Diabetes - Diabet... - 0 views

Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration and subsequent risk of type 2 diabetes. Mattila C, Knekt P, Männistö S, Rissanen H, Laaksonen MA, Montonen J, Reunanen A. Diabetes Care. 2007 Oct;30(10):2569-70. Epub 2007 Jul 12. PMID: 17626891 doi: 10.2337/dc07-0292 We found a significant inverse association between serum 25OHD and risk of type 2 diabetes in the simple model. However, the association was attenuated in the multivariate analysis, adjusting for potential risk factors of type 2 diabetes. To our knowledge, this is the first cohort study investigating the association between serum 25OHD and incidence of type 2 diabetes. Our results are in line with those from the Nurses' Health Study (5), where an inverse association was observed for the intake of vitamin D supplements. We could not differentiate whether the results depended on the effect of vitamin D deficiency on β-cell function or on insulin resistance. In summary, the results are in line with the hypothesis that a high serum 25OHD concentration may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Further research is needed to confirm the association and to distinguish between the independent role of vitamin D and the role of healthy dietary and lifestyle patterns in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in vitamin D-insufficient hip fracture patients after supplementation with ergocalciferol and cholecalciferol. Glendenning P, Chew GT, Seymour HM, Gillett MJ, Goldswain PR, Inderjeeth CA, Vasikaran SD, Taranto M, Musk AA, Fraser WD. Bone. 2009 Nov;45(5):870-5. Epub 2009 Jul 23. PMID: 19631774 doi:10.1016/j.bone.2009.07.015 Cholecalciferol supplementation resulted in a 31% greater increase in total HPLC-measured 25OHD (p=0.010) and 52% greater rise in RIA-measured 25OHD (p0.05). In vitamin D-insufficient hip fracture patients, supplementation with cholecalciferol 1000 IU/day for three months was more effective in increasing serum 25OHD than an equivalent dose of ergocalciferol. However, the lack of difference in PTH lowering between calciferol treatments raises questions about the biological importance of this observation.

High-dose oral vitamin D3 supplementation in the elderly. Bacon CJ, Gamble GD, Horne AM, Scott MA, Reid IR. Osteoporos Int. 2009 Aug;20(8):1407-15. Epub 2008 Dec 20. PMID: 19101755 Sixty-three elderly participants were randomized to three regimens of vitamin D supplementation: a 500,000-IU loading dose; the loading dose plus 50,000 IU/month; or 50,000 IU/month. CONCLUSIONS: Large loading doses of vitamin D(3) rapidly and safely normalize 25OHD levels in the frail elderly. Monthly dosing is similarly effective and safe, but takes 3-5 months for plateau 25OHD levels to be reached.

Teenage girls and elderly women living in northern Europe have low winter vitamin D status. Andersen R, Mølgaard C, Skovgaard LT, Brot C, Cashman KD, Chabros E, Charzewska J, Flynn A, Jakobsen J, Kärkkäinen M, Kiely M, Lamberg-Allardt C, Moreiras O, Natri AM, O'brien M, Rogalska-Niedzwiedz M, Ovesen L. Eur J Clin Nutr. 2005 Apr;59(4):533-41. PMID: 15714215 doi:10.1038/sj.ejcn.1602108 CONCLUSION: Vitamin D status is low in northern Europe during winter. More than one-third of the adolescent girls have vitamin D status below 25 nmol/l and almost all are below 50 nmol/l. Two-thirds of the elderly community-dwelling women have vitamin D status below 50 nmol/l. Use of vitamin D supplements is a significant positive determinant for S-25OHD for both girls and women (P = 0.001). Healthy elderly French women living at home have secondary hyperparathyroidism and high bone turnover in winter. EPIDOS Study Group. Chapuy MC, Schott AM, Garnero P, Hans D, Delmas PD, Meunier PJ. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 1996 Mar;81(3):1129-33. PMID: 8772587 These results show that vitamin D status of a French aged population in good health and living at home depends mainly on lifestyle. Like institutionalized women, old women living at home exhibit clear evidence of senile hyperparathyroidism in the winter, secondary in part to a reduced 25OHD level and associated with biological signs of increased bone turnover. The maintenance of PTH within the normal range for healthy adults by vitamin D and calcium treatment might constitute an approach for the prevention of bone loss in the entire

Vitamin D and cognitive performance in adults: a systematic review. Annweiler C, Allali G, Allain P, Bridenbaugh S, Schott AM, Kressig RW, Beauchet O. Eur J Neurol. 2009 Oct;16(10):1083-9. Epub 2009 Jul 29. PMID: 19659751 DOI: 10.1111/j.1468-1331.2009.02755.x This systematic review shows that the association between serum 25OHD concentrations and cognitive performance is not yet clearly established. The inconclusive results of the reviewed studies could be due to methodology, types of the cognitive tasks used and/or the cellular mechanisms of vitamin D.

THL: D-vitamiinin puute lisää suomalaisten kuolemia | Tohtori Tolonen - 1 views

"Suomalaisten vähäinen D-vitamiinin saanti lisää kuolleisuutta sydän- ja verisuonitauteihin ja aivan erityisesti aivohalvaukseen, kertoo Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitos (THL) uudessa raportissaan. Laitos on tehnyt suuren virheen vastustaessaan vitamiinien käyttöä ravintolisänä. Nyt on korkea aika nostaa D-vitamiinin saantisuositus ajan tasalle, vähintään 50, mieluiten 100 mikrogrammaan (µg) päivässä. Nykyinen viranomaissuositus on 3-60-vuotiaille 7,5 ja alle 3 ja yli 60-vuotiaille 10 µg/vrk."

A positive dose-response effect of vitamin D supplementation on site-specific bone mineral augmentation in adolescent girls: a double-blinded randomized placebo-controlled 1-year intervention. Viljakainen HT, Natri AM, Kärkkäinen M, Huttunen MM, Palssa A, Jakobsen J, Cashman KD, Mølgaard C, Lamberg-Allardt C. J Bone Miner Res. 2006 Jun;21(6):836-44. PMID: 16753014 doi: 10.1359/jbmr.060302 We conclude that the current vitamin D recommendation for adolescent girls, at least in the northern latitudes, is too low to ensure sufficient vitamin D status during winter. Intake of vitamin D at rates of 10-15 μg/day aids to maintain stable S-25(OH)D concentrations during winter. Vitamin D induced BMC augmentation by decreasing bone resorption, but not affecting bone formation, which was reflected by the biochemical markers of bone turnover. Optimizing bone mineral gain in adolescence is crucial to the prevention of osteoporosis later in life. Increasing vitamin D intake to 10-15 μg/day aids in attaining this goal.

25-Hydroxyvitamin D and functional outcomes in adolescents. Lamberg-Allardt CJ, Viljakainen HT. Am J Clin Nutr. 2008 Aug;88(2):534S-536S. Review. PMID: 18689396 CONCLUSIONS Cross-sectional studies have shown a relation among serum 25(OH)D concentration, serum PTH concentration, and BMD in adolescents. Long-term randomized controlled intervention studies have shown that vitamin D3 supplementation has a positive effect on BMD in adolescence; some of these studies found an effect with doses as small as 5 µg (200 IU) to 10 µg (400 IU) per day, or without supplemental calcium.

D-vitamiini vähentää merkittävästi riskiä sairastua tyypin 2 diabetekseen, raportoivat Kansanterveyslaitoksen tutkijat. He seurasivat 17 vuotta noin 4000 naisen ja miehen terveydentilaa.

D-vitamiini - Wikipedia - 0 views

  •
D-vitamiini on yksi ihmisen tarvitsemista rasvaliukoisista vitamiineista. D-vitamiinin muotoja ovat kolekalsiferoli (D3) ja ergokalsiferoli (D2). Ihminen pystyy itsekin tuottamaan D-vitamiinia riittävässä auringonvalossa UVB-säteilyn vaikutuksesta. D-vitamiini on steroidihormoni, jonka esimuotoa muodostuu ihossa tai saadaan ruoasta. D-vitamiinin vaikutukset välittyvät vitamiinireseptorin (VDR) kautta. Reseptoreita on kaikissa soluissa keskushermosto mukaan lukien. Useat kliiniset ja kokeelliset tulokset osoittavat D-vitamiinin vaikuttavan aivojen toimintaan. D-vitamiini voi vähentää riskiä sairastua tyypin 2 diabetekseen[6]. Kansanterveyslaitoksen tutkijat seurasivat 17 vuotta noin 4000 suomalaisen naisen ja miehen terveydentilaa. Niillä henkilöillä, joiden veressä oli eniten D-vitamiinia, oli 40 % pienempi sairastumisriski verrattuna niihin, joiden veressä vitamiinia oli vähiten. Maailman terveysjärjestön (WHO:n) syöväntutkimuslaitos IARC Lyonissa analysoi 18 suurta D-vitamiinitutkimusta, joihin oli osallistunut 57 311 ihmistä[7].

Vitamin D2 is as effective as vitamin D3 in maintaining circulating concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Holick MF, Biancuzzo RM, Chen TC, Klein EK, Young A, Bibuld D, Reitz R, Salameh W, Ameri A, Tannenbaum AD. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2008 Mar;93(3):677-81. Epub 2007 Dec 18. PMID: 18089691 Conclusion: A 1000 IU dose of vitamin D2 daily was as effective as 1000 IU vitamin D3 in maintaining serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and did not negatively influence serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels. Therefore, vitamin D2 is equally as effective as vitamin D3 in maintaining 25-hydroxyvitamin D status.

Evidence that vitamin D3 increases serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D more efficiently than does vitamin D2. Trang HM, Cole DE, Rubin LA, Pierratos A, Siu S, Vieth R. Am J Clin Nutr. 1998 Oct;68(4):854-8. PMID: 9771862 Although the 1.7-times greater efficacy for vitamin D3 shown here may seem small, it is more than what others have shown for 25(OH)D increases when comparing 2-fold differences in vitamin D3 dose. The assumption that vitamins D2 and D3 have equal nutritional value is probably wrong and should be reconsidered.

Comparison of daily, weekly, and monthly vitamin D3 in ethanol dosing protocols for two months in elderly hip fracture patients. Ish-Shalom S, Segal E, Salganik T, Raz B, Bromberg IL, Vieth R. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2008 Sep;93(9):3430-5. Epub 2008 Jun 10. PMID: 18544622 doi:10.1210/jc.2008-0241 CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation with vitamin D can be achieved equally well with daily, weekly, or monthly dosing frequencies. Therefore, the choice of dose frequency can be based on whichever approach will optimize an individual's adherence with long-term vitamin D supplementation.
