This article talks about how the social studies classroom is spending much of its time teaching literacy. While it is important for the extra literacy teaching, the article talks about how parents are worried about a lack in social studies education because of this. The cause for the extra literacy teachings in the social studies classroom is to prepare the students for the state mandated testing that places much more importance on literacy than on civics. This article is about how the No Child Left Behind Act is hurting the social studies departments in schools. The social studies teachers are not teaching as well as they should because they are more worried about getting kids up to par on their test scores. They are teaching ways to pass a test in stead of teaching the cirriculum. This is causing kids to not have as good of an education as they should. This article measures the use of alcohol marijuana and cocaine among college students. This article talks about excess uses of these drugs and their effects on negative behavior. This survey was taken and it asked students how many times they used alcohol, marijuana or cocaine and how it affected their behavior socially. Demographics and social class plays roles in the different users in college. This article is great for me because it helps me better understand usage and its social behavioral effects on college students. This gives me information of the prevalence of marijuana use among college students and the rates of use. This is statistical data of 1,400 students helps me use and understand the information in my paper. With this information I can compare it to other articles and surveys taken.

This is basically a social network analysis of how smoking effects friendships. weather it streanghtens them or weekens them. this is cool becauce i once did smoke and 3 of the poeple in the comminty i am studying smoke as well. I thoguht this was potentially a direction a could take my research in.

Marijuana is heavily repressed in the United States. There is repeated documentation that there are lower risks associated with marijuana use compared to alcohol consumption. Also our government spends billions of dollars yearly to fight the war on drug/marijuana. Socially the United States needs to reform laws to accommodate social and economic disputes. This article effectively attacks the problem in the United States with marijuana laws. This article entails the health risks and economic issues that can be resolved with legalization or decriminalization of marijuana. Medical documentation gives evidence of lower health risks with marijuana compared to alcohol.

The teaching of such a controversial social issue as evolution in the classroom presents difficulties to instructors, both on personal and professional levels. Griffith and Brem examined fifteen Arizona biology teachers, pulling their experiences from focus groups, interviews, and surveys. The study contains a great deal of anecdotal information dealing with both internal and external influences on instructors' teaching methods. This research investigates a whole new realm of the issue as it pertains to literacy by looking directly at those who control the flow of information and those who influence it. However, the researchers make little conclusive headway, suggesting simply that instructors should be made more comfortable with the topic by having access to better information and resources. Ultimately, the personal experiences are telling of the political climate and social stressors.

This article discusses a study that was done to show the correlation between health literacy and social communication. It is based off of older adults who usually have more health problems. It was showed in this study that also the older adults tend to have more chronic illnesses, they have very low health literacy

This article discussed if social support is correlated with older adults health literacy. They also studied to see if the adults health was directly effected because of there health literacy.

This article takes into account 292 college students and discusses social norms and other negative effects of marijuana. They take into account social-environmental and biopsy logical factors of use. Also they talk about risk factor associated with different uses of the drug. There is also some statistical information that accesses they amount and number of college students that use or have used marijuana. This is a very supportive article because it give me some insight on the risk of marijuana and marijuana related problems. There is some good statistical information relating to the 292 college students. The stats state that 46% of college students have claimed to have smoked marijuana. With this article it can help support some of my statistical information from my survey I have put out.

In this prospective study home literacy is considered a multifaceted phenomenon consisting of a frequency or exposure facet (opportunity), an instruction quality facet, a parent-child cooperation facet, and a social-emotional quality facet. In a multiethnic, partly bilingual sample of 89 families with 4-year-old children, living in inner-city areas in the Netherlands, measures of home literacy were taken by means of interviews with the parents and observations of parent-child book reading interactions when the target children were ages 4, 5, and 6 years. At age 7, by the end of Grade 1, after nearly 1 year of formal reading instruction, vocabulary, word decoding, and reading comprehension were assessed using standard tests. Vocabulary at age 4 and an index of the predominant language used at home were also measured in order to be used as covariates. Correlational and multiple regression analyses supported the hypothesis that home literacy is multifaceted. Home literacy facets together predicted more variance in language and achievement measures at age 7 than each of them separately. Structural equations analysis also supported two additional hypotheses of the present research. First, the effects of background factors (SES, ethnicity, parents' own literacy practices) on language development and reading achievement in school were fully mediated by home literacy, home language, and early vocabulary. Second, even after controlling for the effects of early vocabulary and predominant home language, there remained statistically significant effects of home literacy, in particular, opportunity, instruction quality, and cooperation quality. This article discusses the prospect of a drug control policy that includes regulated legalization. Claims that marijuana's medical efficacy is no longer in dispute and the idea that legalization will eliminate marijuana use among young people. Concern about abandoning those who could be treated for their addiction does not sit well with conservative values. This article talks about solving a major drug problem with just legalization. People refute that legalization of marijuana will help socially and economically but they are wrong. This articles gives me strong support on the benefits of legalization of marijuana.

This article is based on a study released by the United States about the No child left behind act. The study is about how the act leaves out social studies, languages and the arts from schools. The only good that came from cutting out these subjects of study from school is that the rates of increase in learning for math sciense and reading/writing have gone up drammatically. Could be helpful for those studying literacy and family, especially among single-parent families.

The author of this article describes how class and race can affect a persons life and what they do with their lives. The author has done a lot of research on different topics to see if the effects of a childs race or social status really have an effect on thier education. They found that children living in poverty have a less chance of succeding in academics. The main point of this article addresses is the African American population, but that is not always completly the case.

the only thing i really found usefull here is a single excert explaining how the better cocial terms one is on with their classmates, the better they usually do academically. I thoguht i could potentially corelate this into terms of how close knit you are with your friends the better you do in school, but im still working on it. not sure if i can use but someone might be able to.

this was a cool little study i found about how roommates of different race effect your experience at college. this shows brought my mind to think of different directions to take on my community study and how race could possibly effect the tensions and social relationships between two people in the group.

This article does not address media coverage of politics but addresses media coverage of women and men in television shows. Women are often portrayed doing jobs such as childcare, nurse, household chores, and teachers while men are seen as doctors, lawyers, and the dominators of the family. Although this is changing, it still plays a significant role in most television shows. Women do not only struggle with gender roles on television but often male writers dominate female writers in the film industry. By using a different example of literacy in my paper, it will show how women are betrayed in the media besides political media. This is important to use as support for my main points in the paper. I can relate gender bias both in politics and in television to show people how this is just not happening in one area of the public media.
