This article talks about how quick reads are encouraging adults to read. Authors are being encouraged to write quick novels to make reading mroe appealing to busy adults. This increases literacy in adults who are too busy to read.

Many older adults in Medicare managed care programs have low health literacy, and this may affect use of preventive services. Objectives. To determine whether older adults with inadequate health literacy were less likely to report receiving influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations, mammograms, and Papanicolaou smears than individuals with adequate health literacy after adjusting for other covariates. Research Design. Cross-sectional survey; home interviews with community dwelling enrollees. Subjects. Medicare managed care enrollees 65 to 79 years old in four US cities (n = 2722). Measures. Short Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults and self-reported preventive service use. Results. In bivariate analyses, self-reported lack of preventive services was higher among individuals with inadequate health literacy than those with adequate health literacy: never had an influenza vaccination: 29% versus 19% (P = 0.000); never had a pneumococcal vaccination: 65% versus 54% (P = 0.000); no mammogram in the last 2 years: 24% versus 17% (P = 0.017); never had a Papanicolaou smear: 10% versus 5% (P = 0.002). After adjusting for demographics, years of school completed, income, number of physician visits, and health status, people with inadequate health literacy were more likely to report they had never received the influenza (OR, 1.4% 95% CI, 1.1-1.9) or pneumococcal vaccination (OR, 1.3; 95% CI, 1.1-1.7), and women were less likely to have received a mammogram (OR, 1.5; 95% CI, 1.0-2.2) or Papanicolaou smear (OR, 1.7; 95% CI, 1.0-3.1). Conclusions. Among Medicare managed care enrollees, inadequate health literacy is independently associated with lower use of preventive health services. (Abstract taken from JSTOR.)

Mandell and Lewis explain that young adults possess insufficient knowledge when it comes to the world of personal finance. This assertion is not new and many researchers have come to a similar conclusion, but the two authors believe young adults in other countries such as Japan and Australia lack financial literacy. Their study focused on whether teenagers lack of motivation inhibited their assimilation of information during finance classes. the researchers believe teens just don't believe financial literacy is important. Their study included five national surveys, with results broken down by different demographics such as sex, race and family income.

This article discusses a study that was done to show the correlation between health literacy and social communication. It is based off of older adults who usually have more health problems. It was showed in this study that also the older adults tend to have more chronic illnesses, they have very low health literacy

This article discusses the use of slang by different ethnicities. It discusses the concepts of whether or not slang can be pinpointed to certain cultures opposed to a certain group of "slang talkers". It also helps distinguish between slang being used as a barrier between teens, adults, social groups, and even differences between friends. This helps to illustrate the different varieties of literacy among youths and adults from different cultures.

The Institute disseminates information on scientifically based reading research pertaining to children, youth, and adults as well as information about development and implementation of classroom reading programs based on the research. This article is about a study/experiment that was done with a group of adults that had visited a health clinic. The tested the performance of new vital signs, and if people were able to read them. This tested there literacy levels, and they had other ways of testing there literacy levels.

The Article describes jumpstart; a non profit program that provides financial lessons to students and young adults. It acknowledges the serious problems of financial literacy in the US. Jumpstart is a program within most US states and it seems like a very productive and positive enterprise.

The study was made to determine what sociodemographic components affect food panel label use. It is targeted at adults and was found that more women with higher incomes are more likely to use the food panel. It was determined that the labels were used to maintain a healthy body weight based upon the information on the label. The survey was random across 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The author reports on the study "To Read or Not to Read," which was released by the United States National Endowment for the Arts. The study found that Americans read less in 2007 compared with previous years. The study found that reading abilities for teenagers and adults have declined, whereas reading abilities for younger children have increased. The impact which the decline in reading abilities has had on American workers is discussed. The author states that the amount of time which people read on a daily basis has declined. Green shares the story of Roy Kobert and John Ninfo a bankruptcy attorney and bankruptcy judge who both volunteer their time teaching kids the importance of financial literacy. With the economy plummeting out of control both men have decided to be advocates for teaching financial literacy to children and young adults. Both men have seen the devastating effect that financial literacy ignorance has caused on the economy and individuals. They fear that if creditors can lure the youth into debt, our countries youth future is in jeopardy. Their goal is to stop the madness before it starts through education intervention. The article also talks about several different programs promoting financial literacy that have been implemented in different states across the country.

This article is about a study done on low income families. They have proven that when parents are in poverty it affects their children in a negative way. The study shows that these children are more likely to grow up to be low income when they are adults. Parents that are low income have to deal with many problems and don't have time to help their children get a good education.

We sought to determine whether literacy mediates the relationship between education and glycemic control among diabetes patients. Methods: We measured educational attainment, literacy using the Short Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (s-TOFHLA), and glycemic control (HbA1c) in 395 diabetes patients at a U.S. public hospital. We performed path analysis to compare two competing models to explain glycemic control. The direct effects model estimated how education was related to HbA1c; the mediational model estimated the strength of the direct relationship when the additional pathway from education to literacy to HbA1c was added. Results: Both the model with a direct effect of education on HbA1c and the model with literacy as a mediator were supported by good fit to observed data. The mediational model, however, was a significant improvement, with the additional path from literacy to HbA1c reducing the discrepancy from observed data (p<0.01). After including this path, the direct relationship between education and HbA1c fell to a non-significant threshold. Conclusions: In a low-income population with diabetes, literacy mediated the relationship between education and glycemic control. This finding has important implications for both education and health policy. (Abstract taken from JSTOR.)
