This article discusses the assessment of a class of girls who were issued a certain type of graphics calculator. The teacher of this class was known for his integration of calculators in his course curriculum, and his classes were known for achieving above average on tests. The primary study was to investigate the effects of learning with the use of a graphing calculator. Classroom conversation was recorded and analyzed in order to determine how well the class understood the curriculum. This article while limited only to certain number of students delves deeply into how they were taught, and their response to the use of graphics calculators in the classroom.

It may be helpful because it lists some of the arguments for and against this method and gives examples of other places where the same thing is being tried out.

The authors of this article talk about he achievement gap among students that are wealthier compared to lower class. The wealthier student get a lot more of the needs and get the support from home, while the lower class do not get as much and do not always have that support. In this article many studies were conducted. These are reliable studies that show how poverty among students can cause more problems in a childs academic development.

Using a nationally representative sample of 13,609 kindergarten children in 2,690 classrooms and 788 schools from the base year of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999, along with three-level hierarchical linear models, this study investigates the impact of early literacy instruction on kindergarten children's learning, as measured by direct cognitive test scores, indirect teacher ratings of children's achievement in language and literacy, and indirect teacher ratings of children's approaches to learning. Two composite measures of phonics and integrated language arts are constructed from teachers' reports of their instructional practices. Findings show that classroom mean outcomes were significantly higher when classroom teachers reported using both integrated language arts and phonics more often. However, children with low initial performance benefited less from integrated language arts instruction, as measured by direct measures of achievement; such differential effects of instruction were not observed for teacher ratings of children's achievement and learning style. The article explains uses of the graphing calculator, and how it can be integrated into the calculus course. The article explains what the graphing calculator can be used for, and the benefits. That the students scored higher on tests, and over all performed better in class with the use of graphics calculators.

The Authors of this article have conducted a study on 710 college students who were taking Pre-Calculus class. They were split into a controlled group, and a test group. The control group took the course using basic technology, and text books. The test group used graphics calculators and textbooks geared towards learning with graphics calculators. At the end of the course the students were required to take a comprehensive exam. The results showed that the students who took the course with the graphics calculators scored much higher than those who took the course in the traditional fashion. This study was conducted over a period of three semesters, and will prove very useful in my argumentation.

This article explains how graphing calculators can be used in calculus to benefit students, and also how graphing calculators are changing the way that calculus is being taught. One issue that sets this article apart from the other articles is its assessment of how students are required by most schools to purchase their own calculators. This article analyzes the effect this can have on how the class should be taught, and how calculators put students at advantages and disadvantages depending on how they are used, and how students with more computing power excelled or failed compared to those with the less powerful model of calculator.

Mandell and Lewis explain that young adults possess insufficient knowledge when it comes to the world of personal finance. This assertion is not new and many researchers have come to a similar conclusion, but the two authors believe young adults in other countries such as Japan and Australia lack financial literacy. Their study focused on whether teenagers lack of motivation inhibited their assimilation of information during finance classes. the researchers believe teens just don't believe financial literacy is important. Their study included five national surveys, with results broken down by different demographics such as sex, race and family income.

This article discusses what is critical thinking and tells about how there is no set definition. There are also many people who have tried to develop ways in which to measure ones critical thinking abilities. One such case was a study where they examine students' exams from a college class about Sociology of Marriage and Family and they discussed the results and findings from this study. This article is noteworthy due to its analysis of critical thinking and its interesting study.

This article describes a curriculum designed to assist 64 post baccalaureate minority students in developing and practicing a stress-management technique. Students participated in deep breathing meditation exercises in two classes and they completed surveys before and after as well as follow-up surveys each academic year. This article concluded that this technique provided the students with a promising solution for academic and professional situations.

This article reports on a small-scale study which examined the home literacy practices of a group of 3 and 4 year-old children in a working-class community in the north of England and explored how far these practices were reflected in the curriculum of the nursery the children attended. The data illustrate that there was a dissonance between out-of-school and schooled literacy practices and that there was more evidence of nursery literacy practices infiltrating the home than vice versa. Children's literacy practices in the home were focused on media and popular cultural texts and the article argues for greater recognition of these contemporary cultural practices in early years policy documentation and curriculum guidance. Murnane focuses on the children living in poverty and the low performance of the students. His goal is to make the No Child Left Behind Act more realistic. The goal should be to concentrate on the children's growth as a student, not to reach an obtainable test score. The government needs to improve conditions of schools of children living in poverty. The author suggests that the poverty stricken schools need to strengthen their staff in order to change anything. The main goal of children living in poverty is to get them to graduate from high school. The rate of kids graduating from high school in low income schools is down a great deal of percent than suburban schools. Murnane gives his opinion of setting obtainable goals not only for middle class students, but students that come from a poverty stricken area.

A psychological article about college students and financial management. The study examines debt and spending habits of students and how that may of occured. Their are statistics of demographics, financial classes, and even personality types and their relationship to debt. Could provide a good viewpoint of sociological and psychology factors for research.

The article states that especially in times of economic trouble, no one can afford to be financially illiterate. The authors focus on the management of debt and college students. Specifically they address credit cards and student loans. They also speak of how certified public accountants are great educators for this problem. A valuable article to relate Accounting classes for students and their financial literacy.

Davis' study of the necessity for financial literacy is interesting and examines the cost benefit ananlysis for financial literacy courses. The study is done with Texas PTA parents and their willingness to allocate additional funds for financial classes. Davis addressses the growing problem of American students and their lack of finacial knowledge. Overall a valuable article to examine the publics willingness to provide funding for financial education

A 20 page survey on the impact of financial literacy classes and survey results. The surveyor examines results from every state and uses many detailed questions. His surveys included results by race, gender, and location along with many others. The stastics are starteling and valuable for research on financial literacy.

The author of this article emphasizes on the relationship between urban schools and other shcools. They realize the achievement gap and how it is increasing over the years. The students in urban schools were put through programs to help thier knowledge and to challenge them. The students of the school were to take classes on technology to help further technology because of how much we use it today. This will help students further thier knowledge and help them grow as an individual.

In 2007, the Oklahoma Legistalure passed a law called "The Passport to Financial Literacy Act" that requires students, beginning in the 7th grade, to demonstarate "financial proficiency in 14 areas" to acheive a high school diploma. Other schools with the help of the National Endowment Fund for Financial Education have incorporated programs to increase the levels of financial literacy among students. Critics of this program state that these prgrams are not helping the overall financial literacy levels of high school students upon completion. It is not plausable to state that these financial programs are useless, because these programs need to work in correcpendence of parents teaching their children good financial habits within their own homes.

There are ways for students to gain financial literacy and this article is mentions plans for student programs to help do this. The article talks about how some finance classes don't help a students understanding of finances, and mentions to have financial literacy it might have to begin in a person's childhood.
