Race & Gender in Politics - 0 views

    Rubin describes how sexism is more socially acceptable that racism in our society. Rubin states it plays a bigger role in politics than most people believe. This also discusses how John McCain addressed Hilary Clinton when asked "How do we beat the bitch?" and he responded. This article also addresses Barack Obama and his stance on sexism and racism. This article would be useful in my paper because it describes a good example of how sexism can be used in a presidential election and the difference between sexism and racism. Although it does not relate directly to literacy, it does relate directly to politics and the views of sexism in the previous elections and with media. I can use this for a solid example and explanation against women.

    this was an inetresting source because it said one fact i never really thought of before. that is that your friends and social grouping can influence your negative approach to schooling. this is a not a path i really ever thought to go down when looking at how my communities dynamics megativly effect school so i guess something good came out of this source.

    Literacy is a continuous, multidimensional indicator of proficiency in using written language. This essay reviews several recent books on literacy, and suggests some profound theoretical issues about consumer behavior inspired by a sociocultural perspective on literacy. In particular, ties between literacy and six diverse research programs on consumer behavior are highlighted: responses to persuasion; affect and decision making; the meanings of products and brands; social marketing of health behaviors; consumption, identity, and resistance; and the impact of the internet on consumer behavior. "Let the Girls Do the Spelling and Dan Will Do the Shooting": Literacy, the Division of... - 0 views

    Using an ethnography of discourse approach, this article argues that literate interactions in a rural eastern Kentucky community are strongly linked to symbolic values assigned to self through the gender-based division of reading and writing labor. Noting that literate practices are God-given attributes of women's "nature," it describes how literate interactions provide contexts in which a woman can negotiate her social, religious, and cultural identity. What constitutes acceptable literate forms is culturally constrained by a tension between maintaining "country" values while assimilating those "proper" women's literate forms which augment, rather than replace, oral forms. Men's identities are not linked to these literate practices, creating minimal or non-literate behavior. These cultural constructs of literacy affect both men's and women's behavior in classroom, workplace, or urban interfacing situations, affecting mobility problems. (Abstract taken from JSTOR.)

    Thaler discusses the "financial literacy crisis" facing most Americans. Today, a record number of Americans are inept when it comes to financial literacy and as a result accumulate large sums of debt and fail to plan for the future. The author explains that Americans get into trouble because current financial systems such as credit cards are not user-friendly. To counter this escalating problem, researchers believe financial programs should be created that provide consumers with basic financial knowledge and assist them in making good choices. Finally, parents must begin teaching financial literacy to their children at a young age and not keep the subject a private matter. Thaler's argument that new financial programs should be created is logical given the current crisis situation he identifies, but he fails to outline a way to do so. It discusses the concepts of whether or not slang can be pinpointed to certain cultures opposed to a certain group of "slang talkers". It also helps distinguish between slang being used as a barrier between teens, adults, social groups, and even differences between friends. This helps to illustrate the different varieties of literacy among youths and adults from different cultures.

    The article reports on the new arrival the for use of medical marijuana, for things such as chronic pain and nausea. Like the other 10 states in the U.S. marijuana would only be available to patients through a doctor's prescription. States such as Alaska have dismissed the law but were the first state to legalize marijuana possession for persons over 21. This article is evidence that America is slowly reforming marijuana laws but very slowly. This shows that many states need to rethink medical marijuana policies. I can use this in my paper for support of states and their social take on legalization of medical marijuana.

Also legalization of marijuana/ drugs can help Americas defense against sovereign and international crime. Many illegal organizations around the world feed off American drugs policies earning billions of dollars for their criminal enterprises. Drug cartels and terrorist organizations use drugs to fund their operations. The article is a great reason for legalization of marijuana/ drugs. The terrorists we are fighting are feeding off the people we are trying to defend. The whole system is flawed and if America continues to fight a battle against this foreign enemy we will never win the war on terrorists.

Motivation and Disinhibition in High Risk Sports: Sensation Seeking and Self-Efficacy - 0 views

    This study examined the roles of sensation seeking and self-efficacy in explaining extreme and high physical risk taking behavior. Study participants were 20 extreme risk takers chosen from participants in skiing, rock climbing, kayaking, and stunt flying. One control group was comprised of 20 high, but not extreme, risk takers from each of these activities, matched to the participants in skill and experience. A second control group consisted of 20 trained athletes involved in moderate risk sports. Percepts of self-efficacy emerged as the principle variable differentiating the groups. A social cognitive explanation for desire for mastery was used to understand what enables risk takers to overcome the potentially inhibiting influences of anxiety, fear, and the recognition of danger. This conclusion is further reinforced by converging results from interviews with the participants.

    the author in this article descirbes how the transition from middle school to high school can cause a lot of stress on a student, which can allow them to not work to their full potential. So many urban schools are now considered failing schools, which means there is unequal learning going on. With the transition there are a change in expectations, social changes and it is a big adjustment. The author mentions a very important part where the achievement gap is widening and oppurtunities are becoming non existent.
