The New York Times - Breaking News, World News & Multimedia - 0 views

To me, this is a BAD example of alignment - but I'm book marking it just to explain why. It's the New York Times website and I feel like it should be super organized and easy to navigate through. There is a "grid" but as you scroll down the site, the grid changes like 3 times and it is not aesthetically pleasing at all. It's all justified text but the alignment is off.

D1 HW#1 Justification (typesetting) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

The 4 most common alignments used are justification, centered, flush right and flush left. Wikipedia gives the definition of the justification typesetting and examples. This is my favorite site regarding this topic because it shows other references to help better understand the concept.

I like this website because it is a fun way to show how alignment is used poorly and how it can be used well. We have all read a comic and understand that the first one on this page is hard to read because of its alignment. So this site shows exactly how important alignment is, and how you can learn to use it correctly.

Oh my this site is so awesome! I think it is really directed towards me; I have been feeling like my comic tutorial is very unorganized and not aligned. This site supplements just a short "comic-like" tutorial on alignment. I just really felt like it was a a little helpful and hopefully I have gotten good insight from it. It gave me a good idea how to organized and align my Glogster page little better

This is a great explanation of alignment that includes extensive examples of how it can be used well to bring unification to a layout. There are numerous examples rangin from business cards, to stationary, to title pages.

This sight helped me out by showing different examples of symmetry in web design. I also liked how it gave little explanations of the types below each picture.

This was a great example of how to use alignment in design to build an aesthetically pleasing page. It was my favorite of all the sites that I found and the most helpful. It went through the different types of alignment; center, left, right, and justify and gave great examples of each. It also explained the best situations to use each which I found very helpful.

Moviefone is another example of balance, the logo "Moviefone" is large and tilted - making it what your eye is drawn to. But, the menu is to the left (the site has an asymmetrical balance). But somehow the asymmetrical idea of this website totally works and is visually pleasing.

I think this site shows balance because of its asymmetrical elements. The logo and title is to the right and the menu is to the left, but not equal. The display of the product is symmetrical right through the center. It's an example of the "focus achieving a harmonious balance."

Lyrics, albums, songs, artists and more music | LetsSingIt - 0 views

I think this website displays balance because of the visual weight of the headline. It's definitely a good choice for the site, the title and what they want people to remember is large and bold "LetsSingIt" and underneath in a much smaller, italic font it reads "your favorite music community" - it has less visual weight.

D#4 HW#1-Website Recommendation - 0 views

This website has all the information about creating a great website. It goes through each step with detail and an example. It states that first a designer should use an effective marketing model in order to get attention from the audience, then one should play with colors for their website. Once one plays with the colors and main idea, then one can focus on balance. It was very informative.

This website showed various examples of balance in actual web pages. It showed the not only symmetrical and assymetrical balance but also vertical, horizontal, radial, and bileteral symmetry. The author, Stephanie Hamilton, explained how a "rule of thirds" should be used when designing an image. This is when an image is imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. This is so important compositional elements are placed along these lines or intercections.

Balance - Basic Principles of Design - 0 views

  • Balance is a visual interpretation of gravity in the design. Large, dense elements appear to be heavier while smaller elements appear to be lighter.
    • Delaney Hensley

This is explained in chapter four as the wieght of elements. Which is the main focus of balance.
  • Most Web pages are built on a grid system, and this creates a form of balance for the page right away.
    • Delaney Hensley

A grid is a good way to arrange parts of a whole in an equal way.
  • Centering is the easiest way to get a symmetrically balanced page.
    • Delaney Hensley

Centering the main focal point is important
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • To balance it asymmetrically, you might have a small element farther away from the centerline. If you think of your design as being on a teeter-totter or seesaw, a lighter element can balance a heavier one by being further away from the center of gravity.
    • Delaney Hensley

Light and dark are good ways to balance a page aswell as making things look closer or further. but mostly in art.
  • If the content of your design is also intended to be uncomfortable or make people think, a discordantly balanced design can work well.
    • Delaney Hensley

making something complicated and still balanced is pretty good effect depending on what you are trying to express.

I chose to do this page on balance because it wasn't mainly focused on text. It had a main focus on videos. The balance on the page lies in the way the videos are formatted which causes a visual path in which the user is directed to them. This page is not too formal so the symmetric alignment of is not the biggest contribution to the balance. I believe what really makes it is the layout of the page is the way that the different search options are left justified and guides the readers eyes to the videos below. Also the genres on the right take up the additional white space on the page allowing for a fuller looking page.
