This coincides with the design principle of emphasis.

Coincides with the design principle of balance.
  • Users don’t read, they scan.
  • users search for some fixed points or anchors which would guide them through the content of the page
  • the less intuitive is the navigation, the more willing are users to leave the web-site and search for alternatives
  • the web-page should be obvious and self-explanatory
  • The only element which is directly visible to the users is the word “free”

I agree and think that these are very good guidelines. You don't really think about them when you are reading different instructions, but when I look back it makes sense. I don;t really ever read anything untill it catches my eye and looks interesting. ONce I start reading if its to wordy or boring I stop reading, I don't to have to think to hard.

This website lists "10 Principles Of Effective Web Design" that I believe are very useful. The images and information about where the users eyes fall and how to strategically organize your page are all helpful in designing not only blogs but any web page. These tips are very effective because they view everything from the users' perspective, saying things such as "users follow their intuition" or "users want to have control." I think that the aspects mentioned are good to take into account when design a site.

D#8 HW#3 Variability - 0 views

  •
I think this page does a good job of describing what Manovich meant by variability in new media. The last statement, "Consequently, new media position the audience as users; able to manipulate and customize the media's experience for themselves to a greater degree than any previous form." is an ideal way to describe this phenomenon. The user of new media plays a huge part in how the media being viewed plays out over time. Interactivity is the cornerstone of this variability principle and I can see it being extended in the future to accomadate our (the users) needs and wants in ever more changing ways.

Weighing the Pros and Cons of IM: Instant Messaging Offers Instant Conveniences, Instan... - 1 views

  • According to America Online’s most recent survey, 26 percent of its users use IM at work. Of that 26 percent, 58 percent use IM to communicate with colleagues, and 49 percent use it to get answers and make business decisions.1
  • IM allows users to transfer files and images, which can be dangerous. IM was originally designed for entertainment purposes. The software did not take into account the possible transfer of sensitive data such as electronic personal health information.
  • IM software has a very basic technology structure, which creates many security issues.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Managing records of IM chats is tricky and exists in a gray area legally. Are IM chats part of daily business records and thus the patient’s record? Depending on the content of the discussion, certain messages may need to be kept. Activity that contains electronic personal health information or involves a patient and that’s passed between users should be logged and audited.
  • The reality for many organizations is that IM is already in use, regardless of the threats involved
  • To IM or not to IM, that is the question. IM has its advantages and disadvantages. Do the risks outweigh the benefits or do the benefits outweigh the risks? Every organization should carefully consider both when deciding whether or not to use IM.
  •
This is an interesting article about the pros and cons of IM's in the health care industry. It's funny how everything seems to come back to legal issues these days.

D #5 HW #1 Templates and Grid Systems - 0 views

  •
This website expands on the grid discussion in the textbook. It offers a template called the 960 grid system, which refers to the width of the viewport, which is the area in the browser in which the website is displayed. The height of the example template, the artboard, is three scrolls of the screen height. I found this interesting because according to the author, three is the average number of scrolls a user with an average amount of interest will scroll,

Because these software platforms are web-based, users can use any computer to access them at work, at home or even on the road. They eliminate the need for expensive software and fewer IT employees are required for setup, updates and patches to systems. "

Virtual Communities - M/Cyclopedia of New Media - 2 views

  • There are virtual communities representing everything from intense one-on-one encounters, people interested in gardening, political and environmental lobbyists to political prisoners (Rosenberg, 2004, p.612). The uses are diverse but all virtual communities on some level provide an interactive forum for communication between its users. The level of communication is often directly related to 1: the needs of the users and 2: the specific purpose of the particular virtual community. Most virtual communities have at least one of three main purposes: either to network and collaborate, provide emotional support or to improve quality of life (Joinson, 2003, p.169)
    • April Gallegos

This is exactly what the article was saying about the different reasons people use virtual communities.
  • The term ‘virtual community’ was first cited as commonplace by Howard Rheingold, to define the online cultures of those engaging in computer-mediated communication (CMC), establishing “alternative planetary information networks? (Rheingold quoted in Flew, 2005, p. 62). This was made possible due to the three interrelated components of CMC: the construction of social networks and social capital, the sharing of knowledge and information, and the facilitation of new forms of democratic participation in society (Flew, 2005, p. 62)

The Small Print: Writing User Interface Instructions - 1 views

This seems like a fantastic resource for technical writers or any other creator of instructional materials. I like that emphasis is given to the planning, thinking and analyzing of the content and audience before even beginning to write the instructions. There are several good bits of advice in this site.

Read the pages 65-75 those pages talke about the new media for architectue. For example, the new ways to sketch Coon designed a program 'sketchup' that the user can sit and on a computer pad sketch what they invision in into the computer. I think that the new media for design has gone a long way towards haveing CAD computer aided design.

I know that we've passed the whole copyright discussion, but I thought I would share this for any fellow students who find reason in their lives to either know more about copyright or to question it. There is information here, but the information is geared towards keeping the end user informed and not pushed around.

D#6HW1: Dustin Brewer Web Design » Blog Archive » CRAP design 2: Using repeti... - 0 views

  • This article is of course about repetition and the uses it has in any type of design.
  • epetition is best used when making some aspect of the design repeat itself throughout the rest of the design. The reason for this is familiarity for the end user or viewer, this gives the person a sense of calm and understanding.
  • When a user becomes comfortable with a design they will come back time and again because they know that every time they are looking for something on the magazine, brochure or web site they know that the format is going to be the same and their answer will always be in that same area.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • For instance, if you have a business card with big bold company name and in the same style of big bold you have the phone number you are going to make your viewers eyes move back and forth between the company name and phone numbers giving you the two most important pieces of information that you are looking for when you are holding a business card.
  • Another easy way to add repetition is with typography, using the same font (type face, color, and size) throughout your design will help to bring everything together.
  •
I think this one is just a great resource on repetition. I especially like the authors use of the acronym. Repetition in design seems like a lot of fun and I can't wait to apply

I chose to do this page on balance because it wasn't mainly focused on text. It had a main focus on videos. The balance on the page lies in the way the videos are formatted which causes a visual path in which the user is directed to them. This page is not too formal so the symmetric alignment of is not the biggest contribution to the balance. I believe what really makes it is the layout of the page is the way that the different search options are left justified and guides the readers eyes to the videos below. Also the genres on the right take up the additional white space on the page allowing for a fuller looking page.
