In my first post, Instilling “Stick-to-itiveness”: Teacher Tips on Perseverance and Goal Setting With LD, I talked about the growing understanding of the importance of instilling perseverance in kids with LD for lifelong success. I shared how teachers from The Shadow Project use a personal goal setting technique to encourage perseverance in students with LD.

I am personally empowered by the potential that inclusive education can initiate. When implemented with integrity, inclusion can energize educators, students, and parents, leading to individual triumphs that also can build successful communities of learners.

The State of Learning Disabilities: Facts, Trends and Indicators provides the authoritative national and state-by-state snapshot of learning disabilities (LD) in the United States, and their impact on the ability of students and adults to achieve educational success and employment. This publication also clarifies what a learning disability is and explains the common misperceptions associated with LD.

The Governor’s State Workforce Investment Board Youth Council is supporting a statewide GED Initiative. You have been identified as a person who clearly understands the economic needs of our state, and the importance of a competitive workforce. Prior to launching the Initiative, two regional promotional sessions have been scheduled to discuss the economic impact of high school dropouts and the importance of statewide support for the GED Initiative. At each meeting, we will discuss how every community can play an active role in reaching out to local youth to bring them back into the education pipeline and open the doors to further education and career opportunities. Click here to download the full brochure with registration form (PDF) Region IV CSPD is pleased to offer a range of learning opportunities to assist teachers in making the curriculum more rigorous and relevant for students.  These workshops will assist teachers in the implementation of a Response to Intervention (RtI) Model in Middle and High Schools.  Workshops will help participants put a successful three-tier model into place at their schools.

What: Do you need to know more about how to promote successful outcomes for your students in the area of math skills? Come to the MASP Summer Institute to discover how to apply recent research findings in your classroom. Learn the essentials of math preparation that we now know underlie proficiency in mathematics, including the importance of effective instruction. Find out the implications for identifying mathematics disabilities and for planning intervention. This is an important conference because there is a great deal of new evidence about how to foster the acquisition of good math skills, information that is not widely known yet. This will be one of the first opportunities that most people in our audience will have to learn about current knowledge on how children learn mathematics and how that learning can go wrong.

Many of the efforts directed toward teaching reading comprehension focus on providing practice at answering questions, while neglecting to teach learners how to reliably answer those questions. In this presentation, we will describe a program that systematically teaches the fundamental strategies for reading success: inferential comprehension, literal comprehension, main idea comprehension, and derived meaning comprehension. These fundamental strategies comprise the core of reading comprehension as it is assessed in standardized tests. More importantly, they provide learners with flexible tools that can be used to comprehend any text regardless of subject matter or reading level. When: June 15th, 1pm (Mountain) Guests: Joanne K. Robbins, Ph.D., a co-founder and executive director of P.E.E.R. International and Principal of Morningside Academy, an innovative school that uses procedures derived from the learning sciences to help children reach their full academic potential. Chelsea Eubank has such severe learning disabilities that her mother resigned herself long ago to the fact that her daughter would never be a reader.
