What: Navigating the web of acronyms surrounding Accessible Instructional Materials can be confusing and frustrating. NIMAC, NIMAS, Chaffee, 504, 508, etc: What do they all mean? As educators, we have an obligation to provide equally effective access to the general curriculum for our students with disabilities. How do we make sense of all this to get access to what our students need? This workshop will provide participants with a clear path of navigation through the maze of AIM and the related terminology.

Yet another semester is underway, and students with disabilities will yet again be left behind because schools are not providing equal access to electronic materials. The issue has been a subject of escalating tension between students with disabilities and their universities. Surprisingly, a common-sense, noncontroversial solution to solve this problem exists in a bipartisan, bicameral bill being considered by Congress. Even better, Massachusetts representatives have taken center stage in support of this solution; the Senate version was introduced by Senator Elizabeth Warren and cosponsored by Senator Ed Markey, and Representative Joseph Kennedy III supports the House version. So what’s the hold-up? A vague, unexplained opposition to “accessible instructional materials” on the part of colleges and universities and their lobbying associations.

The four major decision points in the process include 1) determination of need, 2) selection of format(s), 3) acquisition of format(s), and 4) selection of supports for use. Parents, family members, Parent Center staff, and others are invited to attend this webinar to learn about a 4-step process that can be used to determine whether a child with a disability needs AIM and how to work with the school to access them. Presenters from the National Center on Accessible Instructional Materials at CAST and PACER Center will use scenarios of children with different types of disabilities to provide examples of how the AIM decision making process works.
