An excellent guide for faculty written by Michelle Miller of NAU: "It's for anyone who is in the process of creating a new course or redesigning an old one and needs advice on which technologies to use, how to use them, and why."

An interactive site that helps faculty select and implement social media for use in their teaching based on Bloom's levels, types of content, instructional methods and forms of assessment in the course.

Key finding: "Our data suggest that inserting short summaries into existing course videos is a simple and facile way to improve student recall of course contents." Thirty-second lecture summaries at the midpoint and end of lecture videos were correlated with significantly better learner performance on related quizzes. This was true if the lecture summary was delivered by the course instructor but not if it was delivered by a "guest." (Note: The average video length was approx. 10 minutes.)

EDUCAUSE conducted a special study to gain insights on the student experience during what has been an exceptional time of disruption. In these reports, we share our results from the study related to student experiences with technology in the for-credit courses they were taking in fall 2020 in which they felt they were learning the most, as well as experiences, issues, and pain points students had with connectivity-specifically internet and device access-as they did their academic work in 2020.

wb: Thought this a very useful (+short!) discussion of the new learning that is emerging thanks to computers. Filled with tons of great links to online resources and teaching game examples I hadn't heard of before.

This study of 70,000 courses identified five course design archetypes in terms of LMS use: Supplemental - high in content but with very little student interaction Complementary - used primarily for one-way teacher-student communication Social - high peer-to peer interaction through discussion boards Evaluative - heavy use of assessments to facilitate content mastery Holistic - high LMS activity with a balances use of assessments, content, and discussion

Florida International University "compared 29 online course sections that had been redesigned according to best practices to 664 online sections that hadn't. Across all the metrics the university's researchers looked at--from the time students spent in the online course to how they evaluated the course and the grades they earned--the redesigned courses posted better results."

Learning Theories, Technologies, and Applications -- these were referenced in MacMillan's presentation (Rachel Losh) as the guiding principles that inform the development of their adaptive learning platform, LearnSmart.

As online courses continue to gain in popularity at colleges and universities throughout the country, knowledge about the effectiveness of this mode of instruction, relative to that of traditional, face-to-face courses, becomes increasingly important. (An update to the 2010 DOE report showing no significant difference).
