This source makes many of the points made in the video and readings for this week; Specifically, that scholars have a duty to use open source culture as "creation and curation of human knowledge, scholarship is an open-source endeavor. The end product - human knowledge - is not a fixed product, it is distributed, has diverse manifestations, and belongs to no individual or entity." He extends this notion to pedagogy suggesting "the best pedagogy take the best of what already exists and make it better, at least better for the task at hand."

"Self-publishing is at a stage analogous to the early days of Wikipedia, when users were reluctant to trust information contained in a communally written encyclopedia. It turns out that online democracy performs quite an effective self-regulating function. "

Good points in the article: There are several good reasons a novelist chooses to self-publish: 1. Because of repeated rejection. 2. To get the book to market more quickly. 3. To have more control over the process. 4. To receive a larger share of the book's earnings. 5. To attract the attention of a major publisher.

With digitization of publishing its now an option to self publicize especially for new writers who thing their work will never be acknowledged. But musicians are also using the self publicizing/promotion and later one it does pays on. I heard of Justin Bieber story of when the mother was busy posting you-tube videos.So its possible to go a "freenuim" way and start with e.g blogging and eventually build a fan/interest base

A good central location of information about the concept of OER as well as how to locate such materials. I like the fact that it has sections for both OER newbies as well as those who are more experienced so it truly makes it worthwhile for most folks.

This site opens more doors to using social media tools and explains what they are and how you can connect using the various tools. These tools are making history by showing us new ways to publish our own work(s).

How the internet change the way we research and the way we live. Is it making us smarter or dumber?

Very interesting topic as we are moving deeper and deeper into the internet of things. May answer to that question is its depend how you use it and how you balance it with real life like nature, human relations etc.

David Wiley (aka @opencontent) is a long-time advocate for OER and the use of open content in education. He consistently blogs and tweets very relevant resources and information for this group.

I am a great fan of David Wiley. I follow his blog in my feed to make sure I get all his posts. He recently posted a great article about how MOOCs have hurt the open movement, rather than helped it since MOOCs are not using the word 'open' to refer to the same thing - one is open registration/participation versus open content. http://opencontent.org/blog/archives/3557

@mbishon Marvelous article with one theme summed up in one of his sentences..."Their modus operandi has been to copy and paste the 1969 idea of open entry into online courses in 2014. " I have taken lots of MOOCs and they truly vary in quality. The best MOOC I every took was etMOOC that did exactly what David says open education should be--to revise, remix, and redistribute materials available for reuse, thereby adding value.

A very large library of music for video and other projects. It appears that they are changing their model a bit but still offer free licenses for YouTube projects and some student projects. Other uses will have a fee associated. The quality of music is very high and I have used this site a good deal in the past for student work.

Inkscape is a very handy drawing tool that can be used for a variety of applications including signs, posters, page layout and other options when a photo editor really isn't the right tool.

While we are talking about (open) education, let us look for the handbook. Part I, Chapter 7: "E-learning - an introduction"

It is an essential document for educators and librarians. The Handbook focuses on issues of knowledge and learning and teaching and leading its readers to a mode of considering education as revisiting learners' prior knowledge into the mode of thinking and understanding through the study of primary sources. After Biggs and Moore, the authors of the Handbook view students as individuals who actively construct their knowledge and learning as a process that involves a process of individual transformation. The document touches all the essential questions of education including motivation and deep approach to studying. curriculum design, the use of technologies in learning opportunities and other.

Big data is being used to determine suitable candidates for jobs - not even paying attention to your skills but focusing on how you write. The part about your social media profiles fits in nicely with what Alec Couros was saying in module 2. "The days of keeping your personal and professional profiles separate are over," warns Experis's Geoff Smith. "Social media is a great platform for individuals to demonstrate their expertise, experience and enthusiasm for their field of specialism. However, candidates need to be conscious of the online reputation they are building and the data trail they are leaving behind."
