How Social Media Is Being Used In Education | Edudemic - 10 views

  •
Recently, the Babson Survey Research Group and Pearson conducted a survey of nearly 8,000 faculty members in higher education to find out more about how faculty are using social media. While we often post infographics showing trends or results from specific studies here at Edudemic, I found the results of this survey particularly interesting - perhaps because they were so different from what I expected.

This was an excellent info-graphic source for viewing the survey research done by Babson and Pearson.
  •
The infographic is well done - as all infographics by Edudemic are. It's just a pity, that there is no further information concerning other countries than the US.
  •
Thanks for sharing! My question is if social media is used as a learning tool or it's just propaganda of some education faculty?
  •
Thanks for sharing, it has served me well this information

Universidad 2.0: El uso de las herramientas más comunes de la nueva generación de internet social en la educación presencial universitaria en México - 3 views

  •
The possibilities of the Internet for higher Education are widely known, but they are not sufficiently exploited in México, especially given the recent expansion of the so-called Web 2.0. This article discusses the technologies utilized in the next generation of Internet Assisted Univer- sity Educational Programs, or University 2.0, particularly focusing on the potential that these types of innovations offer to blended learning modalities in Mexico. Blogs, Wikis and RSS are revisited, looking for the elements that help to shape the basis of a state of art, and so help to visualize the possible future of Mexican education in this globalized world.

Information Literacy and Engaging the 21st Century Learner - 4 views

  •
This video highlights ways in which educators (and parents) can incorporate 21st century skills in their lessons to digital natives. Admittedly, as a teacher, I get overwhelmed by all of the information out there and feel pressure to use technology that I'm still learning to be comfortable with. This is a good video that can show you how to get started, geared more towards middle/upper school.
  •
The video begins with 3 minutes of visuals and - very annoying - piano music. I would have turned it off after 30 seconds because I assumed that there would be 13 minutes of this. But since fraup74 says it was a good video I skipped ahead to see if there was more. Otherwise, I would not have persevered. In terms of content, it is a good basic resource (a woman speaks, using screenshots to show how to use online tools). The video is not very engaging.

7 Things You Should Know About Open Textbook Publishing - 0 views

  •
The open educational resources model, including textbooks, has emerged as a response to rising text prices, a need for greater access to high-quality learning materials, the proliferation of e-reader devices, and a trend in publishing toward electronic media. Many contend that educational resources should be open and that instructional models increasingly depend on open content.

Eliza Laur CORAS and Adrian Tumitru TANTAU elaborate on the principles of open innovation. Students experienced in open learning might be better suited in a business world, where innovation has changed from being done in a closed shop, to being fostered by a free - albeit carefully managed - in- and outflow of information

Giving Knowledge for Free: The Emergence of Open Educational Resources - 5 views

  •
This report addresses four main questions: * How can sustainable cost/benefit models for OER initiatives be developed? * What are the intellectual property rights issues linked to OER initiatives? * What are the incentives and barriers for universities and faculty staff to deliver their materials to OER initiatives? * How can access and usefulness for the users of OER initiatives be improved? This is part of an OECD series of reports looking at the impact of Open Knowledge on education systems and learning
  •
Hi Matt, Thanks for sharing this OECD report from the year 2007. The OECD is really forward looking. One sentence strikes me: "Wikipedia has two employees and well over a million articles in multiple languages." Yes, that was true, back in the year 2007.
  •
A very interesting paper that discusses issues around OER, as well as some topics already covered in the course is, "Giving Knowledge for Free: The Emergence of Open Educational Resources" (Centre for Educational Research and Innovation, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). The paper highlights some of the barriers, sustainability issues, and how to improve access and usefulness of open educational resources. I found the paper very comprehensive, with many additional resources. While published in 2007, when conversations around OER were fairly new, many of the points they raise are still in discussion and relevant.

Participatory Culture, Agency, and the Development of Worldview Literacy - 2 views

  •
Schlitz M, Vieten C, Miller E. Journal of Consciousness Studies. 2010 July-Aug;17(7-8):18-36. "In this paper, we examine how increasing understanding and explicit awareness of social consciousness can develop through transformations in worldview." In order to develop a participatory culture which allows for participation by people from different cultural, educational and political backgrounds to the dominant Western culture in the digital domain, it is argued that Worldview Literacy needs to be cultivated, and tolerance learned for different worldviews. This would facilitate participation by all, and prevent the silencing and exclusion from agency of those from different backgrounds.
