Internet Archive: Live Music Archive (free music download, streaming, and preservation) - 4 views

  •
One place the tradition of fans recording live shows and trading the bootleg tapes (ala the Grateful Dead) is being brought to the digital world is at archive.org's Live Music Archive Bands officially agree to allow the practice, and then archive.org stores and allows access to the files for eternity... Some info about those details: http://wiki.etree.org/index.php?page=TradeFriendly For example, here is my friends, a ROCKING bluegrass band from Duluth Minnesota: https://archive.org/details/TrampledbyTurtles The rights statement is actually an email: On February 7, 2007 Trampled by Turtles a GO! for archive.org: "Hello, This is Dave Simonett from Trampled by Turtles. I'm writing to give permission for our music to be posted at archive. Please let me know what you need from me. Thanks for the email. Dave Simonett trampled by turtles info@trampledbyturtles.com www.trampledbyturtles.com" "Welcome to Internet Archive's Live Music library. etree.org is a community committed to providing the highest quality live concerts in a lossless, downloadable format. The Internet Archive has teamed up with etree.org to preserve and archive as many live concerts as possible for current and future..."

    Cool...

Awesome resource - thanks for sharing. I have often found the conflict between quality recordings and open access to be a challenge. It seems the music that is free isn't usually high-quality, whereas the higher quality isn't usually free. :)

EF Education First Turns Testing Industry on its Head With the Launch of the World's Fi... - 1 views

  •
LONDON, Sept. 16, 2014 /CNW/ - EF Education First announced that the EF Standard English Test (EFSET), the world's first free standardized English test, will be released on September 30, 2014. The EFSET will also be valuable to schools, companies, and governments, where large-scale testing was previously cost prohibitive. In the coming years, EF will work with institutions that want to adopt the EFSET as a formal English certification test, thereby helping millions of students and employees. This looks interesting, I wonder what kind of adoption rate we will see. It could really be a disruptor.

Hi Raúl. Thanks for sharing these free resources. Which one do you like best? Which new insight did you gain?
  •
I think Elinor Ostrom's approach to commons pool resources (used by Hess, for example) is very useful not only for understand the case of natural resources as commons (the tragedy of the commons to which it was originally applied), but to matters more close to this course, as knowledge. The approach is useful because it complicates the original perspective on commons. Originally (Elinor Ostrom) her perspective considered only group boundaries clearly defined (very small groups, peasants or indigenous); rules governing the use of collective goods well matched to local needs and conditions; cases where most individuals affected by these rules can participate in modifying the rules; the right of community members to devise their own rules is respected by external authorities; monitoring mechanisms by community & graduated sanctions. With the new commons (surprisingly, not only knowledge but roads, budgets, radio spectrum; medical commons, atmospheric commons and even silence as commons), new questions rises on the evolution or building new types of commons with no pre-existing rules and norms; increasingly complex; with size, communities, incentives often unknown; extremely dynamic; reactions to threats of enclosure; heterogeneous community; new forms of collaboration and collective action; and global in many cases. I think is a perspective that can help a lot in the case of knowledge and new forms of learning.

LaTeX - A document preparation system - 1 views

  •
LaTeX is a high-quality typesetting system; it includes features designed for the production of technical and scientific documentation. LaTeX is the de facto standard for the communication and publication of scientific documents. LaTeX is available as free software.
  •
LaTex is a document preparation system programmed in free software. It is also a document markup language. It is a very useful tool to create scientific documents in many fields, but especially appropriate to write mathematical expresions. Among its advantages, it has different dictionaries for many languages, it can be adapted to any style class and gives a professional look to any document you write. In addition, manage of bibliography references is quite simple and flexible. Latex comprises a collection of TeX macros and program to process TeX documents and convert them in PDF documents, but also in HTML, PS, EPS, DVI, etc. The other main advantage is that LaTex document scan be opened with any text editor since they consist of plain text and do not contain hidden formatting codes or binary instructions.

Linux Command Line By William Shotts (free ebook, website) - 0 views

  •
Are you a new linux user? (and why not give a linux a try! There are many great, stable, simple to use distributions out there now! And you can try many of them out with out even installing via live cd) The GUI is great, but to "unlock the POWER" it is great to learn about a few more advanced commands. I don't bother memorizing the command, but you will be amazed at the things you can easily figure out how to do with Linux, making your computing life easier and more powerful... The website is very helpful, and the book version is free and CC.
  •
I LOVE linux. I have let my brain turn to iOS mush in recent years, but since it's open source, I was able to google --er search via duck duck go-- fixes for a wifi connection issue and that shellshock thingie. And in far less time than it ever took to fix a Microsoft or WIndows issue. There are guys you can find online who will ship you a machine pre-loaded with Linux or Ubuntu or Debian, if you can't or don't want to bother with wiping and doing it yourself. If an easily distracted and slightly airheaded person like me can handle it, imagine how a more 'normal' person can do! Great post. Thanks for sharing. In fact, all your shares are interesting.

Economics of open source - 5 views

Next: New economic models: Externally Up: Free Software / Open Previous: Cooperation and competition   Contents The economic impact of open source models is going to be very high, not only in the software industry, but in society in general. In this section, we discuss in some detail some of the more foreseeable issues related to this impact.

Open source software also demonstrates how prices fall for consumers in a free and competitive market. Niche markets develop that serve as means of income for developers and programmers. The availability of free distributions serves as advertising for these specialists.

The Ultimate Directory Of Free Image Sources - 13 views

So, you need an image for your blog? We've spent some time categorizing our favorite sources for free images and organizing them in such a way as to help you find what you're looking for. Hi there! Thank you for sharing this resource. I think that it is extremely helpful to have a list of websites and pictures that I can use with respect to copyright listed on one page. There have been many times when I need to quickly find an image to use for a project, and have gotten caught up in trying to find a picture with an appropriate copyright license. I also did not know that images created by government employees were copyright exempt, and I really enjoyed searching through some of those sites!
  •
It's not only the Creative Commons part that is important but the Public Domain (CC0) pictures, that can be used.
  •
¿Can any picture be used without failing into copyright stops?
  •
Thanks for sharing! The list is very useful. But I'm not sure if it is actually "OK" for university students to use online sources (videos from YouTube, or images downloaded from Google) for academic purpose/ personal use when talking about "fair dealing".
  •
Again, thak for sharing, this tools can be very interesting for who want to create an educational blog Julia Echeverria
