Four Skills to Teach Students In the First Five Days of School - 6 views

  •
As I participate in, and contribute to, the MOOC for Changing the Global Course for Learning, I will inevitably tie the readings / work / ideas back to education at the K12 level. As noted, "Before the internet there were two important things to teach: content and skills, like writing," November said. "Now there's a third skill which is to build out your network to the world."

Creative collaboration, the paper App by Fiftythree - 6 views

  •
This is a neat idea. You start a sketch on your tablet and send it out into the world. Someone else sees your sketch and is inspired to do something else to it. Through successive iterations you have a new sketch that many people have collaborated on. It turns into something unexpected and new.

Data and scholarly publishing: the transforming landscape - 0 views

  •
This article sets the scene for the special issue on research data and publishing. Research data - that material commonly accepted by the scholarly community as required evidence for hypotheses and insights, for verification and/or reproducibility of experiments - has become an increasingly critical issue for publishers given recent developments in funders' mandates, technological advances, policymakers' interests, and so forth. This is from a special issue of Learned Publishing, vol 27, September 2014. This special issue is open access.

The Ukufunda Virtual School - 0 views

  •
Ukufunda, which means "learn" in isiZulu, is the name of the virtual school that was developed by Mxit Reach, UNICEF and the Department of Basic Education. It's an innovation in the South African education system that will address inequalities in the school system, raise education standards and put the power of education in the hands of every learner, teacher and parent.

The Rising Cost of Not Going to College: Pew Research Center - 2 views

  •
This report shows the importance of college education. With the rise in cost of higher education, it is all the more important to have alternatives to the traditional route for college. For those who question the value of college in this era of soaring student debt and high unemployment, the attitudes and experiences of today's young adults-members of the so-called Millennial generation-provide a compelling answer. On virtually every measure of economic well-being and career attainment-from personal earnings to job satisfaction to the share employed full time-young college graduates are outperforming their peers with less education.
  •
There are also costs to society - countries with fewer educated citizens cannot be as competitive in the global environment. It behooves countries to try to figure out how to keep education economical for its citizens.
  •
Well said. Thanks for bringing up this topic and adding it to the conversation. I don't doubt that those who keep learning and gain skills will be more valuable economically and probably then more economically rewarded. But I have serious doubts that the current program of institutionalized degrees is the best route for citizens.

Sal Khan maintains his vision for education. SAN FRANCISCO - Good news for parents of school-age kids and fans of free online tutoring lessons from Khan Academy: founder Salman Khan has no intention of turning it into a profit-making enterprise. Khan, who has three degrees from MIT and an MBA from Harvard, started out creating programs to help a cousin learn math in 2006.

MOOC - 7 views

  •
The structure of MOOCs is continually evolving. Presently the major trend is the transferal of knowledge from the Western English speaking world, but this is changing. Collaboration and other countries' participation in creating this form of education are developing. I believe this is essential for specific regional needs to be satisfied and understood. It is technology and open education collaborating for the benefit of all, not only those with Western privileges. It's not education for education's sake, but brings in a more entrepreneurial approach - not only in Africa where one initiative has started. This article clearly illustrates these new developments in the MOOC arena, providing examples of projects underway and future plans for MOOC 2.0.

Nice to see the MOOC already expanding its presence with others thinking differently about it's future and how to improve the structure.
  •

I think MOOC will be much more effective as tool for learning exchanges between countries, especially developing stakeholder, rather than replacing high education.

La escuela del mañana, por Francesco Tonucci - 2 views

  •

Tech, equipment makers join U.S. 'net neutrality' debate - 0 views

  •
All credit to theSkimm, definitely caught my attention and leaves me wanting to learn/understand further... WHAT TO SAY WHEN THE NEXT EPISODE OF "HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER" WON'T LOAD… Barney blocked. Today, Netflix and a bunch of other big-name websites like Etsy, Kickstarter, and WordPress are protesting to support net neutrality. The sites will be showing a picture of the 'spinning wheel of death' loading symbol - not to make sure you're still breathing, but as a friendly reminder that this could be the future. Refresher: net neutrality is the idea that all content on the Internet should be treated equally, and preference shouldn't be given to sites willing to pay for faster connections. That's not what happens now. There's currently no regulation over how Internet providers treat traffic from different websites. The FCC's been listening to comments on some new rules for monitoring pay-to-play. They're going to stop listening to everyone's opinions next week.
