Globally there is insufficient capacity to adequately prevent, detect and respond to public health issues. Field epidemiology networks have been assisting countries with developing and strengthening their public health workforce and are essential to strengthening health systems worldwide and achieving Global public health objectives. The purpose of this announcement is to partner with an established Global Network and at least two established Regional Networks of public health training in target regions (Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia Pacific) to strengthen and sustain applied epidemiology.

The Global Connections program was designed by TCG and is funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. US-based theatre organizations and individual artists may apply to one of the two initiatives of this new program: Global Connections-On the Road: This initiative will award 10 grants of up to $5,000 each to foster new relationships with international colleagues that will inspire each other's work and aesthetics by creating opportunities for cultural exchange. Global Connections-In the Lab: This initiative will award six grants of $10,000 each to further pre-existing international collaborations by supporting residencies that either advance the development of a piece or explore elements leading up to a full production.

"The World in the City: Metropolitanism and Globalization from the 19th Century to the Present" is the title of the current Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft-funded international and interdisciplinary graduate program, based at the Technische Universität Berlin. (Director Prof. Dr. Dorothee Brantz; Co-Director Prof. Dr. Alexander Nützenadel, HU Berlin.)  The project is a cooperative effort between several Berlin (TU, FU, HU Berlin), New York (Columbia University, Fordham University, New York University, The City University of New York) and Toronto (University of Toronto, York University) universities. In the spring of 2012, 12 graduate students and 2 postdoctoral fellows began their dialogue at the cross-section of historical and interdisciplinary urban studies. While urban researchers primarily define Globalization as being a current phenomenon, historians have rarely focused on the role of cities within long-term Globalization processes. The IGK hopes to close this research gap and offer a relevant contribution to interdisciplinary urban research within 4 thematic areas (architecture and urban planning; migration and mobility; knowledge and communication; environment and sustainability).

The Abe Fellowship is designed to encourage international multidisciplinary research on topics of pressing global concern. The program seeks to foster the development of a new generation of researchers who are interested in policy-relevant topics of long-range importance and who are willing to become key members of a bilateral and global research network built around such topics. It strives especially to promote a new level of intellectual cooperation between the Japanese and American academic and professional communities committed to and trained for advancing global understanding and problem solving.

The Social Science Research Council and the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership have announced that applications are now open for the Abe Fellowship for Journalists. The fellowship is designed to encourage in-depth coverage of topics of pressing concern to the United States and Japan through individual short-term policy-related projects. Applicants are invited to submit proposals on one of four themes. 1) Threats to Personal, Societal, and International Security: Topics may include food, water, and energy insecurity; pandemics; climate change; disaster preparedness, prevention, and recovery; and conflict, terrorism, and cyber security. 2) Growth and Sustainable Development: Topics may include Global financial stability, trade imbalances and agreements, adjustment to Globalization, climate change and adaptation, and poverty and inequality. 3) Social, Scientific, and Cultural Trends and Transformations: Topics may include aging and other demographic change, the benefits and dangers of reproductive genetics, gender and social exclusion, expansion of STEM education among women and underrepresented populations, migration, rural depopulation and urbanization, impacts of automation on jobs, poverty and inequality, and community resilience. 4) Governance, Empowerment, and Participation: Topics may include challenges to democratic institutions, participatory governance, human rights, the changing role of NGO/NPOs, the rise of new media, and government roles in fostering innovation.

The Cooperative Agreement announced in this FOA represents the continuation and further refinement as well as expansion of well-established collaborations between WHO and FDA, through OIP, in support of data-driven and science-based public health, science-based and research strategies and approaches that align well with FDA domestic and global goals. This cooperative agreement is expected to contribute to the knowledge base of the current regulatory efforts in support of food and medical products safety and quality globally and address specific challenges and fill gaps in the global efforts to ensure said safety and quality of such products.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is announcing its intention to receive and consider a single source application for award of a cooperative agreement in fiscal year 2018 (FY 2018) to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to support global strategies that address food safety, nutrition and public health. The purpose of this cooperative agreement is to: 1. Utilize FAO's extensive research and expertise on country development and aid activities. 2. Contribute to the research, knowledge base and development of food safety systems globally due to the increasingly diverse and complex food supply. 3. Enhance and broaden FDA's ability to address global food safety, nutrition, and public health issues associated with food. 4. Provide opportunities to leverage additional resources of other countries. 5. Support the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and FDA's International Food Safety Capacity Building Plan, which emphasizes the concept of preventing food safety-related problems before they occur and the importance of establishing strong relationships and mutual support among all stakeholders, including multilateral organizations, to improve worldwide food safety. 6. Support food safety, nutrition and public health programs that align with FDA's mission.

For over forty years, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has partnered with the Government of Kenya (GoK) to protect the health of the Kenyan people and strengthen health systems. The United States Government remains the largest investor in Kenya's health sector. This investment includes PEPFAR (President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief), GHSA (Global Health Security Agenda), Malaria, TB, Immunizations and Influenza. This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) seeks to build upon activities funded by CDC to support USG Global health priorities in Kenya through implementation of programs and activities that focus on strengthening public health programs. After five years of implementing and strengthening Global health security systems, the USG will continue to advance prevent, detect, and respond strategies to mitigate threats. This NOFO's main outcomes are to: Improve prevention of avoidable epidemics including naturally occurring outbreaks and intentional or accidental releases of dangerous pathogens Improve ability to rapidly detect threats early, including detecting, characterizing, and reporting emerging biological threats Respond rapidly and effectively to public health threats of international concern Strengthen implementation science programs and platforms to improve health outcomes

Consolidating and organizing public health expertise and systems within a National Public Health Institute (NPHI) is a successful way for countries to carry out essential public health functions and improve their accountability and efficiency. The CDC, with over 70 years of experience as the U.S. NPHI, is helping countries around the world increase surveillance, laboratory, and outbreak response capacity to improve recognition of and response to health threats. An NPHI coupled with stronger local outbreak detection and response capabilities offers a sustainable solution for building global public health capacity, achieving global health security, and increasing public health impact. This Notice of Funding Award (NOFO) seeks to build upon activities supported by CDC through partnerships with Ministries of Health, National Public Health Institutes, and organizations that have capacity by providing technical assistance supporting the establishment and development of strong NPHI's globally. The CDC seeks to continue strengthening NPHI's so that they are credible, technically expert, apolitical and prioritize the protection of the publics' health.

The field study is designed to focus on the themes of global competence, education (both practice and issues of international, national, and state policy), and economics. The trip will provide fellows with structured opportunities to observe high-quality instruction and to interact with educators, students, administrators, and policy makers. Fellows also will have opportunities to investigate the historical and cultural significance of the destination country and engage in a service-learning project with a local community organization. Previous field study destinations have included China, Brazil, and Peru. The anticipated field study destination for the 2018 global Learning Fellowship is South Africa.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits applications for research projects in linked Hubs of Interdisciplinary Research and Training in Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEOHealth). The overall objective of the GEOHealth program is to support the development of institutions in the Low- or Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) that will serve as regional hubs for collaborative research, data management, training, curriculum and outreach material development, and policy support around high priority local, national, and regional environmental and occupational health threats. Hubs are supported by two coordinated linked awards to 1) a LMIC institution for research and 2) a U.S. institution to coordinate research training. Together all regional hubs supported will form the GEOHealth Network, a platform for coordinated environmental and occupational health research and research training activities. An application submitted in response to this FOA for research projects must be harmonized with a linked application for related research training under RFA-TW-14-002 Hubs of Interdisciplinary Research and Training in Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEOHealth) Research Training. This FOA is intended to support research that can only be conducted primarily in and/or by scientists of LMIC institutions.

The Office of Citizen Exchanges, Sports Diplomacy Division, in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announces an open competition for the FY 2018 Global Sports Mentoring Program (GSMP). U.S. public and private non-profit organizations meeting the provisions described in Internal Revenue Code section 26 U.S.C. 501(c)(3) may submit proposals to conduct two separate month-long professional development mentorship programs, Sport for Community GSMP and the espnW GSMP, and a reciprocal overseas exchange involving approximately 80 international and American participants in total. By empowering women and people with disabilities, the GSMP directly supports U.S. foreign policy goals, promotes social inclusion, and elevates the status of marginalized populations. Through the mentorship experience, the GSMP encourages mutually beneficial relationships between American sports executives and leaders in the sports sector overseas. Further, the GSMP engages alumni from previous years through sustained U.S. Embassy relationships, follow-on individual grants, and monitoring and evaluation. Tapping into the power of public-private partnerships and founded on participant-led business plans, the GSMP positively impacts communities at home and abroad and creates a more secure and democratic Global playing field for all.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) invites applications from U.S. institutions to support Research Units (RUs) within the Global Network for Womens and Childrens Health Research at NICHD. RUs will consist of U.S.-based research centers applying in partnership with research centers in low income countries as defined by the World Bank. The RUs within the Global Network will participate in addressing the major causes of maternal, neonatal, infant, and early childhood morbidity and mortality through the conduct of clinical research. The grantees will become part of a cooperative network in scientific partnership with the NIH to conduct multi-enter observational studies and randomized clinical trials evaluating disease process, health and wellness outcomes, and results from interventions in resource-poor settings.

PROBLEM: The global community has made great strides in reducing mortality around the world over the last 50 years, but progress in developing countries lags far behind that seen in developed countries. Every year an estimated 303,000 women die during pregnancy and childbirth, 5.9 million children die, and an even greater number become infected with life-threatening diseases like HIV/AIDS, malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia, and TB, among others. The vast majority of deaths due to these largely preventable causes occur in developing countries where access to health services is often poor. Outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases like Ebola and Zika only serve to further compound these health challenges, taxing already stressed health systems and elevating the risk of disease epidemics of global proportions.

This NOFO supports implementation of programs and activities focusing on protecting and improving health globally and further implementing global Health Security (GHS) through partnerships with health organizations. Its purpose is to advance support for multi-sectoral engagement in human and animal health at all levels in developing strong health systems and resources needed for enhanced surveillance, preparedness and readiness efforts for outbreaks, public health emergencies and health threats. The three main strategic areas are prevent avoidable epidemics, detect threats early, and respond rapidly and effectively to potential events of concern for public health and health security. CDC will leverage resources to promote national initiatives and frameworks that support International Health Regulations (IHR, 2005) core capacities: detect and reduce bio-threats, improve sharing of best practices, use relevant tools to promote health security, strengthen accountability and transparency of data sharing, and participate in regional and international health security initiatives. Outcomes include strengthening capacities to prevent, detect, and respond to potential events of concern for public health and health security and demonstrate improvement in at least 5 GHSA/IHR technical areas to a level of "Demonstrated Capacity" as measured by relevant health security assessment (i.e., World Health Organization (WHO)/IHR Monitoring and Evaluation Framework).

The purpose of this NOFO is to support the implementation of programs and activities that focus on protecting and improving health globally and further implementing global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) through partnership with the Tanzania Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MOHCDGEC). CDC seeks to continue working collaboratively with partners and other United States Government (USG) agencies to achieve specific goals in three main strategic areas: prevent avoidable epidemics, detect threats early, and respond rapidly and effectively to potential events of concern for public health and health security. CDC, through this NOFO, will leverage and complement the MOHCDGEC resources in the following activities: promote national initiatives and frameworks that support International Health Regulations (IHR) (2005) core capacities: detect and reduce biothreats, improve sharing of best practices, use of relevant tools to promote health security, strengthen accountability and transparency of data sharing, and participate in regional and international health security initiatives. The outcomes are to further strengthen capacities to prevent, detect, respond to potential events of concern for public health and health security and demonstrate improvement in at least 5 GHSA/IHR technical areas to a level of "Demonstrated Capacity" as measured by relevant health security assessment in line with GHSA 2024 Framework (https://www.ghsagenda.org/ghsa2024).

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) seeks to build upon activities funded by CDC to support Global Health Security (GHS) in DRC through implementation of programs and activities that focus on protecting and improving health Globally through partnerships with Ministries of Health and other governmental institutions.

The U.S. government's (USG) Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) envisions a world safe and secure from Global health threats posed by infectious diseases, and the current Ebola epidemic in West Africa further underscores the economic and humanitarian impacts of infectious diseases. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working to help Ministries of Health meet key International Health Regulations (IHR) (2005) requirements through implementation of the GHSA. CDC seeks to work with partner countries and other USG agencies in a collaborative effort to achieve specific goals in three focus areas:

Subject to funding availability, STAR is a five-year cooperative agreement. The Office of Professional Development and Management Support within the Bureau for Global Health will manage the Award. The Award covers all core-funded activities under this Agreement, and may receive both USAID core and field support funds, from a variety of accounts and earmarks. Applicants are encouraged to propose creative collaborative partnerships with other USG agencies and/or international organizations, NGOs, private voluntary organizations, and firms to implement activities under this program. Proposing at least one new partner in response to this NFO is also highly desirable. "New partners" are defined as organizations that have never received Bureau for Global Health funding as either a direct or sub-recipient. Under this definition, organizations that have been directly funded by a USAID Mission bilateral program or have received USAID Regional Bureau funding will be considered a new partner. Partnerships should be of manageable size with relationships and responsibilities clearly defined.

The DFG-Research Training Group "Globalization and Literature" at LMU Munich invites applications for 7 Doctoral Fellowships starting in October, 2013, for up to 3 years. Funding amounts to 1,300 Euro per month; additional funding for travel grants etc. will also be available. Applications (in English or German) are invited from highly-qualified graduate students. Applicants should have a university degree equivalent to Master level in literature, with a G.P.A. above the average. In exceptional cases, admission is possible on the basis of a B.A. (honours).Their research projects should contribute to the thematic focus of the research training group. Projects that include the exploration of earlier historical periods are particularly welcome. Teaching and discussions will be bilingual. Applicants must therefore have an adequate comprehension level of both English and German, and speak at least one of these languages fluently. Please provide some evidence and/or documentation of your language competence.
