This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites research projects to improve understanding of the causes of high priority diseases in the United States and reducing/eliminating health disparities. Research is encouraged in the following high priority diseases within the scientific mission areas of the NIDDK: diabetes; obesity; nutrition-related disorders; hepatitis C; gallbladder disease; H. Pylori infection; sickle cell disease, specifically, studies in complications of sickle cell disease within the NIDDK mission areas; kidney diseases; urologic diseases; hematologic diseases, including studies in abnormal hemoglobin synthesis; metabolic diseases; gastrointestinal, hepatic, and renal complications from infection with HIV. Clinical trials are not permitted in response to this FOA.

This initiative will support research projects that implement and test comprehensive service approaches to engage and retain youth and young adults (age 12 - 25 years) from health disparity populations in the HIV Treatment Cascade, which includes diagnosis, linkage to care, engagement in care, retention in care, initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART), and achievement of viral suppression.   

The RCMI Research Coordination Network (RRCN), formerly known as the RCMI Translational Research Network (RTRN), was established in 2007 to enhance collaboration across RCMI institutions. The network is designed to engage all stakeholders in the RCMI institutions, increase the quality and efficiency of basic biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research, facilitate study participant recruitment and retention, and increase the efficiency of the implementation and dissemination of research advances to improved health outcomes among minority and health disparity populations. Maintaining the longstanding networking and collaboration with the RCMI grantee community is key to the continued success of this program. The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to provide infrastructure and research funding to support overall network coordination and collaboration, and to expand the Research Coordinating Center (RCC) and Data Coordinating Center (DCC) functions of the RRCN.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits resource grant applications for projects that will bring useful, usable health information to health disparity populations and their health care providers. Access to useful, usable, understandable health information is an important factor when making health decisions. Proposed projects should exploit the capabilities of computer and information technology and health sciences libraries to bring health-related information to consumers and their health care providers.

There are 5.4 million individuals who self-identify as American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) in the US, and there are 567 federally registered tribes. While characterized by many strengths and resiliencies, as a whole, AI/AN populations experience significant disparities compared to the general population across a range of health conditions and outcomes, including infant mortality, alcohol-related mortality, substance abuse, unintentional injury, homicide, suicide, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, obesity, chronic kidney disease, asthma, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, selected cancers, and other chronic diseases. Premature death rates, while decreasing in other US racial/ethnic minority populations over the past 15 years, are increasing among AI/AN populations. However, the examination of data on AI/AN populations in aggregate may obscure the significant heterogeneity within the AI/AN population due to tribal affiliation, geographic region, and other factors. For example, gastric cancers affect AI/AN populations in different parts of the country at different rates ranging from 6.1/100,00 in the Eastern US to 24.5/100,000 in Alaska. At the same time, national survey and epidemiological studies often do not report data on AI/AN populations because the numbers are too small or AI/AN individuals are folded into the highly heterogeneous "Other" category, thus not available to interpret any health outcomes specific for AI/AN populations. For these reasons, there is a critical need to build a more comprehensive evidence base regarding the health of AI/AN populations.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support and accelerate human epigenomic investigations focused on identifying and characterizing the mechanisms by which social experiences at various stages in life, both positive and negative, affect gene function and thereby influence health trajectories or modify disease risk in racial/ethnic minority and health disparity populations.

The purpose of this initiative is to support collaborative research between Tribal Epidemiology Centers and extramural investigators on topics related to minority health and health disparities in American Indian / Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications to implement and evaluate community interventions testing 1) the impacts of mitigation strategies to prevent COVID-19 transmission in NIH-designated health disparity populations and other vulnerable groups; and 2) already implemented, new, or adapted interventions to address the adverse psychosocial, behavioral, and socioeconomic consequences of the pandemic on the health of these groups.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits grant applications proposing exploratory research projects focused on the early-stage development of highly innovative technologies that improve the quality of the samples used for cancer research or clinical care. This includes new capabilities to address issues related to pre-analytical degradation of targeted analytes during the collection, processing, handling, and/or storage of cancer-relevant biospecimens. The overall goal is to support the development of highly innovative technologies capable of maximizing or otherwise interrogating the quality and utility of biological samples used for downstream analyses. This FOA will support the development of tools, devices, instrumentation, and associated methods to preserve or protect sample integrity, or establish verification criteria for quality assessment/quality control and handling under diverse conditions. These technologies are expected to accelerate and/or enhance research in cancer biology, early detection and screening, clinical diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology, or address issues associated with cancer health disparities, by reducing pre-analytical variations that affect biospecimen sample quality.

The NCI's Diversity Training Branch (DTB) and the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) announce the availability of the "Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Award to Promote Diversity" for career development of individuals with a health professional doctoral degree from groups currently underrepresented on a national level in the biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and social sciences. The NCI recognizes a unique and compelling need to promote diversity in the patient-oriented research workforce.   

The purpose of the NCI Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) is to enhance the diversity of the NCI-funded cancer research workforce by supporting eligible individuals from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, social and clinical sciences. This FOA provides salary and research support for a sustained period of "protected time" for intensive research career development under the guidance of an experienced mentor, or sponsor. The Diversity Training Branch (DTB) of the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD), at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), invites career development award applications (K01) from individuals from backgrounds that have been shown to be underrepresented in health-related science.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will support the development of novel model systems that permit integrated approaches to advance understanding of enteric disease at the level of basic science and, ultimately, to facilitate product development. A team of investigators from disparate scientific fields will leverage advances in biomedical and tissue engineering (e.g., the generation of complex human tissue constructs) and/or the gastrointestinal microbiome to develop models that mimic pathophysiology and host response to provide relevant predictive outcomes for human disease, such as distinct clinical outcomes or potentially lethal sequelae.   

Purpose This FOA is intended to support research on lupus through a longitudinal study designed to follow an established, US-based., population-based cohort with lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus {SLE} and skin lupus) of all ages to determine over time: o The treatment, health care access, and natural history (severity, morbidity, mortality, etc.) of cohort members, o Factors (including genetic and other biological factors such as antibody levels) associated with these outcomes, and o The above by categories of research interest (e.g., age, gender, race/ethnic group). Knowledge of such information for lupus, which is associated with strong age/sex/race disparities and has had little public health research, can help identify missed opportunities for better treatment, help identify new disease phenotypes based on progression of disease, and help identify factors associated with progression that may play a role in secondary and tertiary prevention. 

This FOA encourages Research Conference Grant (R13) applications from institutions and organizations that propose to develop interdisciplinary research teams. Teams must include investigators from the social and/or behavioral sciences, and may include the life and/or physical sciences.  The goal is to broaden the scope of investigation into scientific problems, yield fresh and possibly unexpected insights, and increase the sophistication of theoretical, methodological, and analytical approaches by integrating the analytical strengths of two or more disparate scientific disciplines while addressing gaps in terminology, approach, and methodology.  This program will allow investigators from multiple disciplines to hold meetings in order to provide the foundation for developing interdisciplinary research projects.

The Interdisciplinary Behavioral and Social Science Research (IBSS) competition promotes the conduct of interdisciplinary research by teams of investigators in the social and behavioral sciences. Emphasis is placed on support for research that involves researchers from multiple SBE disciplinary fields and that integrates scientific theoretical approaches and methodologies from multiple SBE disciplinary fields. Emphasis also is placed on the significance of expected intellectual contributions that are likely to yield generalizable insights and information that will enhance theoretical perspectives and advance basic knowledge and capabilities across multiple SBE disciplinary fields. Although the IBSS competition will consider any proposal that addresses a topic for which the proposal makes a compelling case that the research will enhance broader theoretical understanding across multiple social and behavioral science fields, social and behavioral science researchers are especially encouraged to submit proposals for research on one of the following three broadly defined topics: Population Change; Sources and Consequences of Disparities; and Technology, New Media, and Social Networks.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits grant applications proposing exploratory research projects focused on the inception and development of early stage, highly innovative, technologies for the molecular or cellular analysis of cancer. Emerging technologies with significant transformative potential that have not yet been explored in a cancer-relevant use may also be considered. An emerging technology is defined (for the purpose of this FOA) as one that has passed the initial developmental stage, but has not yet been evaluated within the context of cancer-relevant use intended in the application and requires significant modification for the proposed application to establish feasibility. The emphasis of this FOA is on molecular analysis technologies with a high degree of technical innovation with the potential to significantly affect and transform investigations exploring the molecular and cellular bases of cancer. If successful, these technologies would accelerate and/or enhance research in the areas of cancer biology, early detection and screening, clinical diagnosis, treatment, control, epidemiology, and/or cancer health disparities. Technologies proposed for development may be intended to have widespread applicability but must be based on molecular and/or cellular characterizations of cancer.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits grant applications proposing technically innovative feasibility studies focused on early-stage development of technologies that address issues related to pre-analytical variations in the collection, processing, handling, and storage of cancer-relevant biospecimens or their derivatives. The overall goal is to develop technologies capable of interrogating and/or maximizing the quality and utility of biospecimens or samples derived from those biospecimens for downstream analyses. This FOA will support the development of tools, devices, instrumentation, and associated methods to assess sample quality, preserve/protect sample integrity, and establish verification criteria for quality assessment/quality control and handling under diverse conditions. These technologies are expected to potentially accelerate and/or enhance research in cancer biology, early detection, screening, clinical diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology, and cancer health disparities, by reducing pre-analytical variations that affect biospecimen sample quality. All projects must include quantitative milestones (i.e., technical metrics that determine whether the specific aims have been accomplished). This funding opportunity is part of a broader NCI-sponsored Innovative Molecular Analysis Technologies (IMAT) Program.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits grant applications proposing research projects on the advanced development of emerging molecular and cellular analysis technologies and technical/analytical validation in an appropriate cancer-relevant biological system. An emerging technology is defined as one that has passed the pilot developmental stage and shows promise, but has not yet been significantly evaluated within the context of its intended use. If successful, these technologies would accelerate research in cancer biology, cancer treatment and diagnosis, early detection and screening, cancer control and epidemiology, and/or cancer health disparities. This FOA solicits projects where proof-of-principle of the proposed technology or methodology has been established and supportive preliminary data are available. Projects proposed to this FOA should reflect the potential to produce a molecular analysis technology with a major impact in a broad area of cancer-relevant research. Projects proposing to use established technologies where the novelty resides in the biological or clinical question being pursued are not appropriate for this solicitation and will not be reviewed.

The purpose of this program is to implement comprehensive HIV prevention programs to reduce morbidity, mortality, and related health disparities. In accordance with the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/uploads/NHAS.pdf) and CDC's High-Impact HIV Prevention (HIP) approach (http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/strategy/hihp/index.htm), this FOA focuses on HIV in the nation by reducing new infections, increasing access to care, and promoting health equity. These goals will be achieved by enhancing community-based organizations' capacities to increase HIV testing, link HIV-positive persons to HIV medical care, increase referrals to Partner Services (PS), provide prevention and essential support services for HIV-positive persons and high-risk persons with unknown/negative serostatus, and increase program monitoring and accountability. Standard performance measures for HIV prevention programs that are consistent with the focus of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy on improving performance and accountability are included in this FOA.
