The purpose of the Field Initiated (FI) Projects program is to develop methods, procedures, and rehabilitation technology that maximize the full inclusion and integration into society, employment, independent living, family support, and economic and social self-sufficiency of individuals with disabilities, especially individuals with the most severe disabilities. Another purpose of the FI Projects program is to improve the effectiveness of services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended. The purpose of this MSI-FI competition is to improve the capacity of minority entities to engage in disability and rehabilitation research and development activities. NIDILRR will accomplish this by limiting eligibility for this completion to minority entities and Indian tribes in a manner consistent with Sections 21(b)(2)(A) of the Act, which authorizes NIDILRR to make awards to minority entities and Indian tribes to carry out activities authorized under Title II of the Act. NIDILRR is particularly interested in applications from individual minority entities that have historically been underrepresented in the Federally-sponsored research arena. In carrying out a development activity under a FI Projects development grant, a grantee must use knowledge and understanding gained from research to create materials, devices, systems, methods, measures, techniques, tools, protypes, processes, or intervention protocols that are beneficial to the target population. The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) invites applications for the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Training (MHRT) awards. The Program supports research training activities in minority health and health disparities research for individuals from diverse backgrounds, including groups underrepresented in biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social sciences research, at domestic institutions and/or at specified foreign low and middle income (LMIC) locations. This program is intended to promote both domestic and international training opportunities in a diverse and inclusive environment for eligible undergraduate, post-baccalaureate and graduate students, as well as for eligible residents, fellows and postdoctoral students.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits applications for Minority PDX (minority patient-derived xenografts) Development and Trial Centers (M-PDTCs). The M-PDTCs will join the PDTC Research Network (PDXNet) and be focused upon development and pre-clinical testing of models derived from racial/ethnic minority populations. The PDXNet is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) program established to coordinate collaborative, large-scale model development and pre-clinical testing of targeted therapeutic agents to advance the vision of cancer precision medicine.

The purpose of the Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) Program is to expand the national capacity for research in the health sciences by providing cooperative agreement support to institutions that offer doctorate degrees in the health professions or in a health-related science and have a historical and current commitment to educating underrepresented students, and for institutions that deliver health care services, providing clinical services to medically underserved communities. The primary goals of the RCMI specialized centers are to: (1) enhance institutional research capacity within the areas of basic biomedical, behavioral, and/or clinical research; (2) enable all levels of investigators to become more successful in obtaining competitive extramural support, especially from NIH, particularly on diseases that disproportionately impact minority and other health disparity populations; (3) foster environments conducive to career enhancement with a special emphasis on development of new and early career investigators; (4) enhance the quality of all scientific inquiry and promote research on minority health and health disparities; and (5) establish sustainable relationships with community-based organizations that will partner with the RCMI Institution.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 Minority AIDS Initiative: Service Integration grant program. The purpose of this program is to integrate evidence-based, culturally competent mental and substance use disorder treatment with HIV primary care and prevention services. The population of focus is individuals with a serious mental illness (SMI) or co-occurring disorder (COD) living with or at risk for HIV and/or hepatitis in at-risk populations, including racial and ethnic minority communities. SAMHSA expects that this program will reduce the incidence of HIV and improve overall health outcomes for individuals with SMI or COD. While there has been an overall decline in new HIV infections in the U.S. from 2008-2014, racial and ethnic minority communities continue to experience disproportionate impacts of HIV.

The Communities Building Healthier Environments for a Stronger Nation Initiative ('Communities Initiative') intends to demonstrate the effectiveness of community-based networks in improving health outcomes among racial and ethnic minority and/or other disadvantaged populations. This program seeks to improve health outcomes through the establishment of integrated networks that collaboratively employ evidence-based disease management and preventive health activities; build the capacity of communities to address social determinants and barriers to healthcare access; and increase access to and utilization of preventive health care, medical treatment, and supportive services. The Communities Initiative specifically targets the unmet healthcare and supportive service needs of racial and ethnic minority populations at highest risk for poorer health outcomes. Health services provided under the Communities Initiative will not be denied to any person based on race, color, or national origin. Populations at highest risk include, but are not limited to, individuals who are newly diagnosed and lack a medical home; individuals who experience difficulty in adhering to a prescribed medical treatment plan; individuals with a chronic disease that is not well managed; and individuals that are unstably housed. Specific health areas to be addressed by the Communities Initiative include asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B or C, obesity/overweight, and mental disorders. Community health programs are required to address social determinants of health, and improve coordination of health, social, and supportive services to significantly improve health outcomes among minority and/or disadvantaged communities. Applicants must choose two but no more than three chronic conditions

The Biophysical Society's Minority Affairs Committee has limited travel support available for minority students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior investigators in the field of biophysics to attend the 2014 Biophysical Society Annual Meeting. Each award will be made to assist in travel expenses to and lodging expenses for the Meeting. Awards will not exceed $1000. Selection of awardees will be based on scientific merit.

The U.S. Embassy Vientiane Public Diplomacy Section announces an open competition for organizations to submit project proposals for funding under the U.S. Embassy's 2018 Public Diplomacy Small Grants Program. he overall goal of this initiative is to enhance our understanding of fundamental biological mechanisms involved in disease conditions that disproportionately affect health disparity populations and develop therapies or interventions that can directly or demonstrably contribute to the reduction or elimination of health disparities. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits applications to conduct: 1. Biological and genetic research to explore disease mechanisms or pathways that influence health outcomes in minority and health disparity populations. 2. Clinical and translational research linking basic science discovery with effective treatment or clinical practice to improve health outcomes in minority and health disparity populations. Projects investigating the etiology, physiology, genetic risk factors, molecular pathways, gene-environmental interactions, pharmacogenomic and personalized medicine in health disparity populations are particularly encouraged.

The American Society for Radiation Oncology is accepting applications for its 2019 Minority Summer Fellowship Award. The annual program is designed to introduce medical students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in medicine to the discipline of radiation oncology early in their medical education. Although medical students in all years are encouraged to apply, preference will be given to first- and second-year students. In an effort to promote radiation oncology as a career choice, the fellowship will expose medical students to clinical, basic, and translational research questions in radiation oncology. The fellowship provides each student with a $4,500 package that includes a $3,500 stipend for the eight-week training program (exceptions can be made for a longer program but will need to be approved by ASTRO's Committee on Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, or "CHEDI") and $1,000 toward the cost of travel to the organization's 2019 annual meeting. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in a United States medical school and be able to identify a mentor with a successful record of research productivity. The mentor should be an ASTRO member. In addition, research must be undertaken at a North American institution during the summer of 2019.

There are 5.4 million individuals who self-identify as American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) in the US, and there are 567 federally registered tribes. While characterized by many strengths and resiliencies, as a whole, AI/AN populations experience significant disparities compared to the general population across a range of health conditions and outcomes, including infant mortality, alcohol-related mortality, substance abuse, unintentional injury, homicide, suicide, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, obesity, chronic kidney disease, asthma, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, selected cancers, and other chronic diseases. Premature death rates, while decreasing in other US racial/ethnic minority populations over the past 15 years, are increasing among AI/AN populations. However, the examination of data on AI/AN populations in aggregate may obscure the significant heterogeneity within the AI/AN population due to tribal affiliation, geographic region, and other factors. For example, gastric cancers affect AI/AN populations in different parts of the country at different rates ranging from 6.1/100,00 in the Eastern US to 24.5/100,000 in Alaska. At the same time, national survey and epidemiological studies often do not report data on AI/AN populations because the numbers are too small or AI/AN individuals are folded into the highly heterogeneous "Other" category, thus not available to interpret any health outcomes specific for AI/AN populations. For these reasons, there is a critical need to build a more comprehensive evidence base regarding the health of AI/AN populations.

To that end, the association invites applications for its Junior Faculty Development (JFD) and Minority Junior Faculty Development (JDFM) Awards Through the JDF program, grants of $138,000 per year plus optional student loan repayment ($10,000 per year) will be awarded over two to four years to help early investigators establish their independence in diabetes research. This announcement solicits applications for fiscal year (FY) 2017 for a new three-year initiative entitled Improving HIV Health Outcomes through the Coordination of Supportive Employment and Housing Services - Evaluation and Technical Assistance Provider (ETAP). HRSA will award one (1) cooperative agreement to a single organization for up to $700,000 per year for three (3) years to conduct a multi-site evaluation and provide technical assistance (TA) to up to 10 demonstration sites. These sites (funded under a separate announcement, HRSA-17-113) will design, implement and evaluate innovative interventions that coordinate HIV care, housing, and employment services to improve health, housing, and employment outcomes for low-income, uninsured, and underinsured people living with HIV (PLWH) in racial and ethnic minority communities. This Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary's Minority AIDS Initiative Fund project is also supported in part, through Special Projects of National Significance

This Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary's Minority AIDS Initiative Fund project is also supported, in part, through Special Projects of National Significance. Providing effective HIV care for communities at the greatest risk for poor health care outcomes involves addressing structural factors, such as poverty, lack of education, unemployment/underemployment, homelessness and other social determinants of health.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) supports efforts to disseminate resources and to integrate them into neuroscience research practice. Projects should be highly relevant to specific goals of the BRAIN Initiative, goals that are described in the planning document "BRAIN 2025: A Scientific Vision." They should engage in one or more of the following activities: distribution of tools and reagents; user training on the usage of new technologies or techniques; providing access to existing technology platforms and specialized facilities; minor improvements to increase the scale/efficiency of resource production and delivery; minor adaptations to meet the needs of a user community. Applications strictly focused on technology or software development, rather than dissemination of an existing resource, are not responsive to this FOA. Refinements to microscopes or tools necessary to customize them to the experimental needs of the end users are allowed. Projects should address compelling needs of neuroscience researchers working toward the goals of the BRAIN 2025 report that are otherwise unavailable or impractical in their current form.
